Mississippi mud pie brown with slim slivers of sepia along the sides and bottom. The light brown sugar colored crown started out as a thick disk and hung around for quite a while. What was initially a fine sheet of unbroken lace became blurry rings in the end.

The low country of the name refers to an area of Europe that includes parts of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Rock Bottom Low Country Stout uses both Belgian malts and Belgian (d'Achouffe) yeast. The nose was roasted malty and appropriately stout-like, but it wasn't aromatic enough for subtleties to be appreciated.

Two of the beer's finest features were depth and breath of flavor, both of which increased with warming. Whereas the first few sips were consistent with a weak 4.0 for taste, the last few convinced me it was a strong 4.0. Quality ingredients in talented hands result in delicious beer.

The bottom end was manned by a fair amount of roasted malt that was nicely charred. The usual flavors of dark chocolate and coffee beans were present in roughly equal measure. However, the beer also had a wonderful spiciness that I thought might be due to either yeast or hops. Turns out it was flaked rye... and probably Belgian yeast as well.

The American hops (Warrior and Centennial) aren't of the spicy variety. Once I was made aware of the hop bill, an undercurrent of grapefruit peel was evident. Warming probably helped there too. There were also impressive black licorice notes that I was still tasting on the way to the car.

The mouthfeel was a minor chink in the armor. However, as a lover of big beer I tend to have different standards than most, especially when it comes to stouts. The carbonation didn't help and didn't hurt.

Low Country Stout is yet another good brew from the West Des Moines Rock Bottom. Those who enjoy American stouts, Belgian stouts and rye stouts should find plenty to like. Or those who enjoy tasty, drinkable beer in general. In other words, anyone reading this. Good stuff.
