Light chocolate and roasted malt, a bit of coffee and some lactose character. Dry stout tang. Dark brown-black clear with thin tan head. Medium body with smooth nitro carbonation. Starts dry with light roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, and some licorice. Carbonic acidity and a light hop bitter finish. Fairly smooth after with nutty character.

Reviewed from notes. On tap at the Rock Bottom in Bethesda, MD.

Pours black with a bit of a mocha head. Maybe two fingers, although that recedes fairly quickly into nothing much. Hints of lacing. The nose is mostly roasted malt with some vague notions of light hops as well as some coffee. Taste is fairly light in flavor with some roasted malt. Decent body with good carbonation. A nice lighter flavor without much standing out.

Oh my God. A beer that is correctly classified as an Irish dry stout? Be still my heard. At least the ABV is still wrong, 4.7% according to the menu and the brewer. Beer served in a shaker pint.

Beer is black but brown at the corners and clear. Head is broken white nitro bubbles that cling to the glass but don't leave much lacing. Beer looks kind of boring.

Aroma is a little smokey rther than alittle roasty. I got some smoked pork, at least way more smoked pork than chocolate malt.

Beer is relatively thin and not very creamy. I wonder what this would be like under carbon though. I bet its not very good. Its roasty and not smokey like I thought it would be but its not sweet and definitely not chocolate.

I had this on-tap at Rock Bottom while visiting with my buddy that lives in Bethesda.

Appearance: dark, dark brown with a thin head
Smell: roasted malt
Taste: very watered down, roasted malt, some coffee flavor
Mouthfeel: very light body
Drinkability: you could drink a lot of these in one night

Overall, not a very impressive beer.

A pint was $3.50 if I remember correctly. I believe the ABV was about 5%. This one was tapped in early October and I tasted it on 10/23/08. I had this one at the Campbell, CA brew pub. It was served in a pint glass.

Creamy, tan 3/4 inch frothy head. Superb retention. Good carbonation and lacing.

Very mild aroma, especially for a stout.

Tastes of roasted malt with a bit of chocolate in there.

Smooth and creamy, but for a stout, there is some room for improvement in this area. Decent carbonation.

Not a bad stout for my local brew pub.

This is a tumbler glass served at the Bethesda, MD location.

Appearance: The ale is black with a mocha colored head that has the look of a nitro pour (but it is not).

Smell: There is a light roasted aroma, nothing spectacular, just enough to remind you that this is a stout.

Taste: The taste is unremarkable. It is roasted and there is a hint of hoppy bitterness, but not too much.

Mouthfeel: The fairly tame flavors are friendly on the palate, but if you are looking for fireworks, look elsewhere.

Drinkability: The abv is low and the taste is not terrible, so realistically, the drinkability factor is good.

Usually a good beer to have with any of the grilled dishes on the menu. Having had this several times, I figured I might as well write down my thoughts on this beer.

Poured a dark, opaque black with hints of brown on the sides of my pint glass. Low level of carbonation, but a nice frothy, tan colored head that leaves behind a good amount of lacing. Aromas of alcohol, coffee, cream, and a touch of smoke. The taste was a bit mild for this style with not nearly enough bitterness or coffee/expresso flavors. The roasted/burnt flavors were muted with just the slightest indication of their presence. In my mouth the beer is creamy and slightly oily, but the lack of smoked flavors and dryness really take away from the beer. More like a dark mild than an IDS.

This stout is pretty full in body. It is pretty much a black opaque color, but I can see a tinge of redness on the bottom edge of my pint glass. This produces a moderately tan head, but it doesn't hang around too long like other stouts like main other stouts. Lace is prevalent all the way through.

Stillwater gives off notes of coffee, chocolate, and a bit of smoke. In a weird way, it reminds me of how Pepperidge Farms summer sausage smells.

The taste is dominated by the burnt malt, smoky and coffee at the same time. This ends with a burnt/bitter finish.

Overall this is a good specimen of stout beer. It's not very frothy when compared to Guinness, almost watery enough to be a porter

Ok, the head on this stout is about equal to the head on a miller light but other than that it’s a pretty impressive, deeply onyx beer. It smells hugely of coffee and just a bit of mocha. The taste is the exact reverse. This one is tasty in the extreme. Great texture, milk shake or malt like. Dry finish demands another sip and then another. Solid.

Pours black with no head, just a ring of tan. Spots of lacing are left when sipped down. Has minimal carbonation. The aroma is roasty, with coffee and chocolate....very nice aroma.

The flavor is of coffee and roasted malts, somewhat toasty, with a light fruitiness in the finish. It is medium in body and a bit thin in the finish. Overall a nice brew.

Black with scarlet highlights when held to the light...nice coffee grounds on the aroma....taste is coffee and dark cocoa...finishes dry..pretty light bodied...decent enough..probably in the same ballpark with the overated Guinness Dry Stout...pretty creamy from the nitro...

This black stout throws out a thin brown head. The small collar leaves some sparse lace. Big thick nose heavy on the chocolate and cocoa, but also freshly ground coffee bean, roasted malts and vanilla as well. Great start here. Taste is milky smooth. Not a lot of milk going on, but a little bit and the texture is very milky. I'm gonna guess there's a little oatmeal in this since the mouthfeel is so round and nice. Great texture. Taste is milk chocolate, java and vanilla all rolled into one. A little oaty as well. Light dustings of semi-sweet chocolate leave the slightest bit of a bitter finish. Very enjoyable stout. Yet another winner from Rock Bottom.

Dense black appearance. slim cocoa-tan head.
Aroma of vanilla, molasses, on the sweet side, not a hint of bitter, almost treacly, syrupy.
Taste: There it is again on the buds, sweet and slick, with a trace of grain on the palate. Exceptionally smooth, great grit at the back, very substantial, full-bodied, with a dry, charcoal finish.
Not exactly what I look for in a standard stout, could use more of the roasty-toasty, more depth, but it's not a bad drink at all. I can see downing it without complaint while shootin' shit about nothin' at all...

This arrived as a really creamy, tan head above a very dark black beer. The scent on the nose is definitely of coffee, which coincidentally asserted itself both in the mouth and on the finish. There was a light hint of charcoal as an aftertaste, but it was not unpleasant, nor did it linger. It is nicely dry and quite full and smooth in the mouth, thanks no doubt, to the N2.

This had a pretty nice coffee taste and smell, but to be honest, I really haven't found too much at Rock Bottom that impresses me. The color was a nice dark black and the head was fluffy and lasting, but the flavor was lacking. This was as average as a stout can get!

Maybe this is the same recipes as other resturants, just a different name to catch the local eye. This isn't a bad beer, just not a standout in any manner. Good rich and dark color, with a smaller head. Taste was pleasant malt with some coffee qualities, but a little thin in taste and mouthfeel overall.
