Drank at the bar on 1-7-11. Reviewed from notes.

Chalkboard above bar notes a birthdate of 12-31-10 and an ABV of 5.9%. Bartender noted that the stout had been aged in a Woodford Reserve Barrel.

Pours out as a chalky, charcoal color. It looks like a stained wood, topped with a heavy brown head and flesh-tone lacing. Carbonation is relatively low, which, coupled with the lighter body, makes for a unique look.

Bourbon smell is heavy enough to carry a slight sting, backed delicately by some mild nuts and chocolate.

Taste is intriguing. It has the dryness of an Irish stout, but with a bit of the nail polish astringency of a straight bourbon shot. The woodiness is really nice and deep, lingering on the tongue long after each sip. Chocolate, roasted malt and dark cherry flavors mingle in the background, making for a complex flavor profile.

Mouth is like a milk shake with a double shot in it. Light hints of vanilla and chocolate provide the sweetness and the closing booziness balances out the sweeter elements. It also manages to warm the body a bit, despite the low ABV.

This is a really nice surprise from Rock Bottom. I didn't expect a bourbon-barreled ale that isn't a stout or barleywine to work, but this pays off in spades.

First tapped on 4-6-2009 according to the board. Served on cask poured into a Mug Club mug.

Appears a hazy dark chocolate brown in color with 2 fingers of foamy light tan head. Great retention and some nice lacing left behind. Smells of vanilla, lactose, roasted malt, and light smoke. Tastes of vanilla, roasted malt, chocolate, cream, a touch of caramel, and a mild bourbon finish. Medium in body though a tad watery, low in carbonation. Creamy with a nice mildly alcohol warming finish, not overpowered with bourbon. Low in alcohol and easy to drink, good for those who love barrel aged beers but not the overshadowing of bourbon and too much alcohol.
