Charred coffee bean black with accents of cranberry and orange. The ale wasn't opaque when backlit, but then what IPA is? A compact slice of beige colored foam looked just fine and left a ridiculous amount of tacky lace as it melted. In the end, the glass was coated with chubby rings connected by gauzy sheets. This was great looking beer...
... and great smelling beer too. It was obvious from the first sniff that Kali was generously hopped. The big blast of sunshine-bright tropical fruitiness spoke to me and said 'Simcoe... and a few C-hops'. The complete rundown includes Warrior, Centennial, Chinook, Simcoe and Amarillo. Hop shortage? What hop shortage?
For someone who has never tasted a black IPA before, the esteemed wdmrock knocked this one out of the park on his first at-bat. Some black IPAs can't be distinguished from regular IPAs with one's eyes closed. And some taste more like highly-hopped stouts or porters. The best ones... taste exactly like Kali.
There was no doubt that the little green cones were large and in charge. Beneath the tongue pleasing blast of hop flavor, however, was a perfect amount of light roastiness that had a quasi-coffee vibe. Neither more of it nor less of it would have worked as well.
Specific flavors were predictable given the hop bill: pineapple and pink grapefruit (Simcoe), white grapefruit (Centennial), tangerine (Amarillo) and resinous pine sap (Chinook). Single hop IPAs can be fantastic, but the right combination of multiple varieties can be pretty freakin' awesome as well. Estimated IBU count: 70+.
The mouthfeel didn't come close to flinching. It was at least medium for the style and had the lightly creamy silkiness that makes drinking good beer pure pleasure from a sensory standpoint.
Kali means 'black' and is one of the fiercest of the Hindu gods and goddesses. Kali IBA is fiercely hoppy and is doubly fiercely delicious. It's also my favorite black IPA of all-time, just edging out Rogue Black Brutal '07. Take a bow Eric, you deserve it.
