Coal black and essentially opaque in color. Served in a clear plastic glass with a thin off-white head. Head receded fairly quickly and left behind some sticky lines of lace.
Smell is smokey and roasted but clean nonetheless.
Taste is a bit roasted with coffee hints and a touch of chocolate (much less chocolate than the name sujects.) A hint of smoked hickory flavor hits the palate, as well, especially after the beer warms. Malt imparts a sweet molasses character which balances the roasted bitterness nicely. As it warms, the alcoholic presence asserts itself as it warms the esophagus.
Light to medium-bodied in texture and much lighter than most stouts. Finishes smooth with little aftertaste to speak of.
Drinkability is high thanks to the lighter body and well balanced flavor. Its not a bad stout but it would be more suited for my taste with more roasted, bitter flavor and a bit more chocolate in the mix.
