"Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom."

--Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Sun tea tawny with bright slivers of lemon and orange along the edges. A thick one finger of golden beige foam never completely faded, and left serrated rings of lace as the beer fell with drinking. The next highest score was tempting.

The nose was dominated by toasted malts and gained a bit of fruitiness with warming. It didn't seem very hoppy, so it was surprising when the beer itself turned out to be fairly highly hopped. This is one instance where the use of a less distinctive hop bill (a guess, since it isn't published) and a clean lager yeast strain hamstrung the aroma a bit.

UnCommon Beer tasted like... well, pretty much like the Beer Advocate description of a California Common said it should. That is, like an aggressively hopped amber lager. The first mouthful seemed balanced... and the next 8-10 mouthfuls gradually put the lie to that notion.

Having said that, hop flavor didn't quite keep pace with malt flavor, which was fine (and was probably style accurate). Flavors included well-toasted bread and black tea leaves. Maybe a hint of citrus, though it's doubtful that the classic citrusy hops were involved. More like the spicy-herbal-earthy ones. Let's go with Northern Brewer and Magnum as complete stabs in the dark.

The mouthfeel was also appropriate for the CC style... assuming that having had seven versions of that style over a period of six years gives me any credibility whatsoever. It was closer to medium than light and gained a lovely mouth cling in the bottom half. The bubbles were energetic with an ideal amount of tongue sting.

Uncommon Beer is well-crafted, simple, clean, hoppy and drinkable. California Common may be an uncommon style, but beer this good is a common occurance at the West Des Moines Rock Bottom. Add another one to the list.
