Draft poured into a stemmed pilsner glass
This one is a treat. I’ve been yearning for something with a bit more punch since I’ve been in town. This is Frostbite, a Belgian strong ale aged in oak wine barrels.
A: Pours an amber/orange hue with very tight, white bubbles coalescing into a paper thin head.
S: Aroma is strong with hints of caramel and alcohol up front, reminiscent of other bourbon barrel aged brews, not necessarily wine, and complemented with sweet, heavy maltiness.
T/M: The taste follows suit at first: strong bourbon-like caramel notes and a warm mouthfeel, but starts to give way to some lighter white grape, a vinegar acidity and deep woody, earthy oakiness.
It’s a bit more basic than I wanted but it’s strong in a tasty way and reminds me of some bourbon aged ales from home. Mmm, bourbon.
