On tap at Gordon Biersch in Burbank, CA.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, wheat, yeast, spices, and a slight soapy aroma. Taste is much the same with spice and earthy flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that seems somewhat unrefined in the aromas and flavors.

Had this at Reagan National Airport. No fruit in glass.

A - Pours a cloudy golden color, one finger white head receded to a thin layer on top. Minimal lacing.

S - Citrus, slight banana and even slighter clove.

T - Good wheaty taste, slight banana and clove and a little orange. Would give it a 3.75 in this category if I could.

M - Creamy and smooth, good carbonation.

O - I have quite frequently been disappointed by their beer but this is one of the better GB offerings, which is good because I like their food. Could and would drink multiples. Would give it a 3.75 in this category if I could.

Had this at the Hopkins Airport in Cleveland

A - Pours a very hazy golden honey color, fairly big white head that quckly recedes leaving a thin layer on top. Slight lacing.

S - Mildly wheaty, some banana and cloves

T - Nice mild tartness, banana pudding on the finish, in between get cloves.

M - Creamy, mild carbonation

O - Not a bad rendition, maybe a liitle weak, but has a nice balance, and has a refreshing finish. A beer you can enjoy a couple of at one sitting

From Kansas City Restaurant

Appearance: It has cloudy hay like body with a small but creamy white head. The lace has a nice retention to it.

Smell: It has an aroma that is on par for this style. A decent banana and clove esters.

Taste: I thought was a little light but still good. There are some lemon/orange tones with banana and mild peppery clove.

Mouthfeel: Light but silky with average carbonation.

Overall: A good American variant.

Served on tap at the GBBR at the RDU airport main terminal. They did not serve with a lemon, which I appreciated.

Pours a cloudy pale golden color with small white foam. Clings to the side. Wheaty smell, but just so-so. Strong banana taste, followed by the wheat. Very smooth, banana in the finish too. Leaves some sweetness at the end.

Very good hefe, really drinkable.

Poured from Growler filled in Virginia Beach location...

A: Pours very cloudy and dark golden in color. With a good finger and a half worth of head that settles to a small ring with a little lacing.

S: Strong citrus, banana, and clove right up front with a slight touch of wheat and yeast.

T: Oddly I'm getting the yeast and wheat upfront, then a big blast of citrus, bananas and clove... Finish is clean with little to no aftertaste.

M: Feel is crisp & clean. It is very light and a little watered down. Carbonation is a little on the light side also.

D: This is pretty good little Hefe.... ABV is pretty low so you can drink a ton of these... but it is pretty close to a lot of other Hefes I've had... Only difference is this one is a little to watered down feeling to me.

At airport Gordon biersch.

A. Orange amber, cloudy, fine head but little retention and lacing

S: yeasty, bready with unusually strong banana and some orAnge with cloves

T: very fresh, doughy with strong yeast esters of banana. Simple but correct

M: again doughy with high carbonation, makes for high drinkability

Fresh, correct and enjoyable like a sparkling water version of a banana muffin

From 10/22/11 notes.

a - Pours a murky straw yellow color with one inch of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of bananas, cloves, spices, and light citrus hops. Some bready malts as well. Not bad, but wans't expecting the citrus.

t - Tastes of bananas, lemon and citrus, cloves, bready malts. Everything is light and that citrus is there again. Not bad at all but a tiny bit bland.

m - Light to medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty average hefeweizen. Thought it was better than their Golden Export, but would order the Marzen or Schwarzbier next time I go.

Had the Hefeweizen at the G & B in Bolingbrook, IL last evening. The color was a cloudy light tan color with white head that laced slightly. The aroma was powered by clove/spice and banana typical of Hefeweizens. The taste included was wa noted in the scent...clove and banana with touches of spice at the end. Overall a very goood balanced taste nothing overpowered the other. The balance made the beer smooth to drink and the beer came off the pallet clean. Not to bad...the mouthfeel was smooth and easy. good session beer.

A glass at the Gordon Biersch bar/restuarant at Dulles Airport in between flights.

Served in a proper weizen glass, it is a hazy golden ale, a bit light in appearance but not highly filtered. Half inch head dissipated quickly to a cap and ring with no lacing. The cap gets recreated with each sip.

Aroma is light with some lemon, with some wet hay, and light peppery spice.

Tastes lemony, with clove notes and a trace amount of bubblegum. Spicy and dry finish. Not bad, but not remarkable either.

Mouthfeel is fizzy, cleansing and refreshing.

A drinkable beer, I could have had another. But nothing remarkable overall.

Had this on-tap at the Miami location. Beer was poured into proper glassware (Weizen glass).

A: this hefe was off to a bad start. The beer had a yellow lemonish color that wasn't as cloudy or heavy looking as most of the good hefes I've tried in the past. Nice looking two finger white head but it dissipated really quick, boo. Some lacing was present.

S: this is where things started to improve. Smell was very enjoyable with lots of wheat, lemon, banana, and hints of honey. Thumbs up.

T: followed the nose nicely with touches of wheat, lemon and banana that are felt in the tongue as soon as you sip the beer. It ends with a bit of an acidic taste, but nothing offensive.

M: light body leaning towards medium. A bit watery but not in a bad way, makes the beer feel crisp and fresh.

O: this beer was a bit confusing. I usually like my Hefes to be on the heavier body side but this was very enjoyable as it was. The lightness and watery feel are definitely uncharacteristic of the style but this beer does a good job in making it feel right. The good smell and taste made up for the weak appearance.

First had: on tap at Gordon Biersch, Broomfield, CO

Not a bad hefeweizen, not great, but one of the better GB offerings. Poured a hazy straw-yellow with a generous white head that receded to a thin layer, but lingered nonetheless. Expected aroma: yeast, banana, spice. Wheat profile on the taste buds, yeasty, banana esters, with hints of pepper and clove. Crisp with a dry finish, light bodied and fairly drinkable.

On tap at the brewpub.

Pours a nice cloudy orange color with particulates. Smells of citrus, wheat, yeast and candy. Flavor is tart and sweet, heavily dominated by an orange citrus flavor but also packing some wheat and spice in there. Finishes dry, tart and slightly bitter. Not my favorite hefe but it’s decent.

Poured from a tap into a hefeweizen glass. Poured a honeycomb flavor with about an inch of foam that stayed for awhile. Smelled sour with a touch of citrus and wheat. Highly carbonated for a hefeweizen. Had a caramel taste to it. Not that much of a taste compared to other hefeweizens.

Pours a darker shade of hazy golden compared to most other Hefe-Weizens. Plenty of creamy white head on top though. Lovely aromas of banana and clove, and this example seems to have more clove spice than most others. Palate offers a good balance of wheat & the signature banana/clove. Finishes somewhat clean. Very refreshing & drinkable. One of their best offerings.

I had this one on tap over at the Tysons Corner location before going to see "Thor."

A: Mildly cloudy (but not too), one finger head that stayed afloat for a reasonable time before fading.

S: Lemon, banana, and clove. The clove was the clear winner!

T: All of the afore-mentioned ingredients seemed a tad watered-down, but still enjoyable.

M: Extremely carbonated.... maybe even too much even. Nice tempered sweetness and the spices gave the brew quite a kick overall.

O: Good, but not great. I'll still revisit this one during the heat of summer.

A pint at the Admirals Club in LAX.

Cloudy amber, decent head and lots of lace and carbonation. Aroma of strong bananas, mild cloves, and hints of sneaker (the rubber part). Strong carbonation front and middle, lots of bananas and a bit of spice. A bit of bitterness on the back. Not bad, perhaps a bit on the heavy handed side.

A- Pours a bright, yet hazy golden, with a one and a half finger white head that retains well and leaves one ring of lacing.
S- Wheat, slight banana, touch of clove.
T- In the flavor, there is much more bubble gum than there is banana. Clove flavor is noticable, but understated. A faint sourness to it as well.
M- Crisp, but I found it underweighted.
D- A mediocre hefe I feel. More spice flavor and more body would have done this beer well.

Had this on tap at the restaurant in Virginia Beach, Virginia
(Review is from notes)

A- Cloudiness. Has the appearance and color of fresh pineapple juice. Decent lacing.

S- Smell of cloves with soft banana notes in the back.

T- Strong, strong clove taste. Reminds me of the clove packing they used on me when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. Very unpleasing. Not as much banana as I had hoped, kinda comes in late on the finish.

M- Thin with an over carbonation feel.

D- Not my thing.

Pours a cloudy, golden straw color. Fluffy white foamy head that holds for some time. No lacing.

Smells of banana, and citrus. Hints of sweetness. But overall, weak.

Tastes of banana and a little fruity. Some sweet bubble-gum notes. Hints of a traditional German Hefe, but again, weak.

Mouthfeel is creamy upfront, smooth, with some carbonation in the finish. However, it is too watery, and thin.

OK, but not the best example of this style.

A: Cloudy, (the cloudier the better), Golden Straw-like appearance with a bright white foamy head. Just looking at it, it's thirst quenching. Thick, sticky lacing, long after it was gone.

S: Big Banana, and phenolic characteristics dominate, both balanced well, with the clove spiciness slightly behind them. The yeasty-wheat aroma's come through nicely. Hops were overpowered as they should be by the Banana and Clove.

T: This beer is super balanced with all it's attributes. Tastes of fresh yeasty bread. Fresh grain, but the yeasty-wheat borderline overpowering at times (Pungent). I attribute this to a change in my senses. Hop presence is right where it should be: in the background.

M: High carbonation, yet amazingly soft and smooth. It helps bring out those classic Hefe aromas.

D: This is one of those beers I sit back and look at deeply when drinking it. I'm simply amazed with this beer. Month after month, year after year, I try this Hefe, and consistently get the same beer.

I love the fact that the grain bill is balanced towards the wheat in fair amounts. I've seen some disappointing recipes with a 30-40% wheat balance. The GB is more in the range of 55% Wheat grist.
To me this is what a Hefeweizen should taste like.

It is the benchmark for all other Hefeweizens out there.

A - Pours an opaque honey orange color with a thin, white, creamy foam on top with tiny bubbles, carbonation is limited.

S - Bananas, cloves, lemons, honey, bready malt and mild coriander spicing.

T - Bready and chewy malt dominates throughout after the initial lemon zing on the front of the tongue. Assertive banana bread spicing, drops of honey, and spicing with some lemon pepper added in. The banana bread and lemon pepper spicing gives a hearty mouth coating at the very end with the hops being very distant.

M - Thick, chewy, bready, doughy, lip smacking sticky on the lips and a body that leans more on the heavier side of medium.

D - Runs very good. It's been awhile since I've had a good German style wheat and I'd say this is a pretty darn good version that's spot on for the style. This is a very filling beer and I felt like I've just ate an entire loaf of bread. Now if I can only roll myself out the door. "Taste great, more filling"!

Enjoyed on tap at the San Jose location with dinner, this brew was a completely cloudy iced tea color with a fair white head and no lacing. I can smell bubblegum wheat, pretty sturdy and standard faire. The flavor is very much the same, sweet with mild but full carbonation. Mid-body for the style with a pretty luscious feel. Very drinkable as you would expect. Solid but not particularly remarkable.
