Enjoyed on tap at the San Jose location with dinner, this brew was a completely cloudy iced tea color with a fair white head and no lacing. I can smell bubblegum wheat, pretty sturdy and standard faire. The flavor is very much the same, sweet with mild but full carbonation. Mid-body for the style with a pretty luscious feel. Very drinkable as you would expect. Solid but not particularly remarkable.

Appearance: Banana yellow. No orange tint like in a lot of hefeweizens I've seen. Ok head retention and lacing as well.

Smell: Bananas. A very clean smell.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Very clean and crisp overall. Again, mostly bananas. Almost tastes like berries and lemon in the aftertaste as well.

Drinkability: Good, refreshing hefeweizen, especially when it's warmer outside.

Overall: A very worthy attempt at a hefeweizen. Thumbs way up!

A generous pour yielded me a gigantic off white head that didn't stick around long. It is orange in the middle with golden highlights. It is cloudy. It smells like banana cream with clove and other spiciness. The mouthfeel is very smooth. No particular taste overpowers another. The banana and spices meld quite nicely. I find this beer very palatable. I didn't expect much coming from GB. I would probably seek this out again.

A: Pours a cloudy golden/orange color. A two finger white head forms, but recedes in a second. Little lace.
S: Dominated by clove and banana. Nothing else. Not bad, but blah.
T: Banana and spicy clove. Again, not bad, but bland.
M/D: A medium body that has a little to much carbonation. Thin and watery. Not hard to drink. Quaffable for what it is.

Another bland ofering. Nothing much to note. Not the worst thing ever, but much better hefe's are out there.

This pours a cloudy deep golden orange hue. It has the requisite banana, clove, and bubblegum, but for me the banana almost comes across as banana bread. I really enjoy this beer and the taste is extremely good. Banana and clove up front with an extremely subtle citrus sprinkled in the middle. The finish is strong with that banana bread and clove note that mirrors the scent. Feels creamy in the mouth, but it does have plenty of carbonation. Very tasty and refreshing.

This is my favorite hefe. I actually had the pleasure of meeting Dan, and he is one of the nicest brewers I have ever met. He challenged me to put his hefe against Weinhephstephaner, and I must admit, I like his better. The over all drinking experience of Gordon Biersch takes the cake on hefes. It was served in the GB hefe glass, with the appropriate head. The banana is not over powering, and not subtle either. I truly enjoyed sitting in the sun and sipping on this beer.

[Appearance]: Deep dark golden color, very cloudy, a little carbonation, fairly nice head, leaves a small amount of lacing on the glass.
[Smell]: Cloves and banana in the nose, bready wheat, slight hint of nutty.
[Taste]: Cloves and banana up front, bready wheat, I could detect some hint of roasted nuts, slight citrus in the mid-plate, vanilla bean at the end.
[Mouthfeel]: Medium bodied, carbonation is very light, very smooth and clean finish.
[Drinkability]: Very drinkable. One of the better American made Hefeweizen.

A- has a thin white head accompanied by a golden body that bears a striking resemblance to a light colored apple cider
S- has a wheat smell accompanied by a spicy banana and bubble gum aroma that suggests a light fruity drink
T- has a light fruity taste, but its a little hard to put your finger on the exact identity of the spices until you read the back, but when read it becomes apparent and undeniable the flavors you taste in this golden beer
M- is really light and just the right amount of hops for a strong but subtle taste
D- definite easy drink just seems to slide down your throat as you enjoy it. I didnt want it to be the my last one that i had but sadly, things dont turn out the way you want them to.

all in all a fantastic beer with an easy, smooth, fruity taste that makes drinking beer fun. definite recommendation for any beer drinker looking for something new to add to their arsenal of beers.

The color and aroma are almost perfect in regards to what a Hefeweizen should be. It is a bright straw yellow, moderate head, and definite hints of clove spice, with citrus and banana in the nose. The flavor is slightly incomplete as the banana taste isn't exactly prevalent in the taste up-front but it certainly does become more noticeable in the aftertaste. In the aftertaste you can sense a lot more of the citrus and wheat. Overall it is a pretty good Hef.

The Gordon Biersch Hefeweizen is a typical hefeweizen with a cloudy golden-orange body and frothy white head. It's wheaty and fruity, and it has a slightly tart edge to it. There's not as much banana as I might like (that's just a choice of yeast strain or fermentation temperature), but the fruitiness more than compensates with notes of apple, pear, some red fruits, and a spritz of lemon. It's well balanced with a firm bitterness running through it, and hints of grassy hops. It doesn't have the depth of character that some of the best Bavarian hefe's do, but it's still enjoyable, refreshing, and easy to drink!

Like the other Gordon Biersch beers, it's not particularly flavorful or robust but worth a try if you're a hefe fan

Appearance: Opaque, cloudy golden

Smell: bananas

Taste: Fruity/banana

Mouthfeel: Light and smooth with little alcohol taste

Drinkability: Sweet and good with a meal but not strong enough to be a stand alone

A - Dark golden brown and very hazy. Poured with a small head that settles quickly but leaves good lace.

S - Strong cloves and banana with a bit of bubblegum. Some bready, slightly toasted malt and a slight hint of grassy hops.

T - Pungent yeast character up front with an even blend of clove and banana. Light malt and slight hop flavor balance in the middle, followed by a sweet, phenolic finish.

M - Creamy body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - Quite nice overall. Not the best weisse I have ever had, but certainly a good one.

Alright, a Bavarian-styled hefe. On to the beer:

Cloudy as expected. A bolder, darker hue of banana peel yellow with a thick frothy head sitting on top. Me semlls bubblegum and clove....and banana. Lemon rind too. Into the mouth it goes, it tastes more like a German hefe than the one-dimensional American wheats. It's a little more fruity than the usual. Lemony. Also tasted is honey, and light whispers of banana and bubblegum. Mouthfeel is light with a gentle burst of carbonation, and it goes down very easy. A tasty hefeweizen that can be found at an affordable rate.

(From notes)

A - Poured with a large, frothy white-head that I associate with others in the style. Really hazy orangey/yellow color with hints of light gold

S - Banana sticks out the most, and might be a little too dominant. Clove, other spiciness, and a little yeasty sourness

T - Pretty much hits on most characteristics in this dept. for the style with banana, citrus fruit, clove, and all spice. Really traditional take and quite nice

M - Lightly carbonated, smooth and nearing on silkier texture, medium to thin

D - Pretty drinkable and pretty refreshing. Nothing terribly innovative or interesting, but a very solid and easy drink

Overall, nothing outstanding, but it's a decent example of the style. I've got no real complaints other than in the aroma being a bit much with the banana (even for the style)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into weizen glass.

A - Murky yellow/gold/brown with about 3 fingers of head. Retention is decent before falling to a solid, thick cap. No lacing.

S - Moderate banana aroma with an almost overpowering citric snap. Slight plastic-like aroma on the back end. Decent but a little weak.

T - I've taken about half the glass to decide what I think of the taste. I want to like it, and while I don't hate it, it really doesn't bring anything new to the table. Big hit of generic citrus with a slightly tangy edge. Tanginess grows and grows until late palate where it becomes something like orange juice with a squeeze of lemon. Late palate also gives way to some mild to moderate phenols, though these flavors are indistinct (aspirin and chalk maybe?). Banana comes through only in the aftertaste. Semi-dry overall, with none of the early sweetness that I would expect.

M - Appropriate lively and crisp carbonation. Body is light, maybe a smidge too light.

D - After Gordon Biersch's exceptional dunkelweizen, I guess I was expecting a little more from their hefe. This is a great beer for summer quaffing, an easy drinking thirst quencher. However it reminds me more of tangy American wheats (Oberon, perhaps?) than the sweetish hefeweizens that I'm used to. I do wish the bubblegum/banana notes were more evident, but this is a decent brew overall.

A) Hazy, almost too dark yellow glass sports a solid white head that drops to a heavy cover that lasts and leaves spots of lace.

S) Overripe cantaloupe, bubble gum, and a rustic wheat backbone.

T) Banana, clove, bubblegum, all good Hefe yeast flavors, with a drying, almost rough wheat finish that is very well balanced with no real hop flavors noted.

M) Bubbly medium body with a dry, rough finish.

O) A solid hefe. It stands up well against German standards (Weihenstephaner), probably due to the fact that we can get it much fresher. Glad to see this in Texas.

I was expecting something a little bit more bland from this company, but this isn't bad.

The lacing and clear color of this beer are nice.

The smell is of some banana phenol with some mild cloveyness in the back. The banana dominates. The beer maintains the characteristic of wheat, by having a clean underlying malt back bone.

This one could be a bit more crisp and refreshin, however I'm sure that a fresh bottle or a sample on tap would be much nicer.

Give this one a try.

Pours a cloudy apricot color with minimal white head and too difficult to see any action.
Multiple aromas of banana, lemon, bubblegum, and wheat malt.
Has a wheat grain taste with hints of banana/bubblegum and has a lemon/lime background with a butter finish.
Light bodied, resinous, with a crisp and soft carbonation.
Been in my mix for awhile I noticed these beers are brewed at Gordon Biersch Brewing, San Jose CA.

I had this one on tap at the Bolingbrook GB on 2/10/2009.

A= This weizen poured a moderately cloudy golden yellow color with a 1.5" snow white head. The head quickly settled to a skim and left very little lace behind.

S= The aroma was a bit faint and sulphuric, but there was a nice fruity estery quality to it. Moderate bubblegum with lots of banana present.

T= Tasted very clean for a yeasty beer, with obvious malts up front with a light lemongrass citrus note just prior to the expected estery banana and clove.

MF= Medium bodied with a great crisp carbonation feel.

D= Though hefeweizens are still not my favorite style, this one grew on me and I order it regularly now. Very drinkable.

Solid looking, cloudy, stiff white head. Orange aroma, Lemony. Wheat and banana esters. Fruit aroma, bananas. Cloves a bit, malty aftertaste. Zesty finish, still smooth though. Overall solid. A great American hefeweizen. Won't take the place of my local favorite Live Oak hefeweizen, but still, very nice.

I'm usually a passionate American Beer > Euro beer guy but one exception I have to that rule is Hefes. Most American ones are pretty bland and don't come close to the best German ones. The Gordon Biersch here was a pleasant surprise. If I had had it blind I would have figured it was German.

A...Soft, hazy, yellow-orange gold color. Nothing special but it looks like what a hefe should look like. Pours a big head that stays around for awhile

S... Like banana bread. Like a hefe should. Very pleasant and light aroma.

T... Nothing outstanding but, again, a very solid hefe taste. That Hefe banana/cloves taste is definately here.

M.. Soft, effervescent and little bit of pleasant spiciness.

D.. An enjoyable glass to drink.

One of the line of Gordon Biersch beers that have just appeared in Texas. It has a nice orange-gold color, though little head appeared and that quickly faded away. Nice aroma though--fruity, sure, but the spicy phenolic side has the upper hand. Very good flavor, with a lightly sweet wheat malt initially, bubble-gum fruitiness, and a solid clovey, peppery spiciness--much like Franziskaner. More carbonation would help the mouthfeel.

Solid hefe here... the other two GB beers that appears in Texas (marzen and blonde bock) are pretty bland, but this one is very good.

Good looking cloudy yellow beer with substantial head. Smelled very spicy, clove and banana, more than I would have expected. Good full mouthfeel with a ton of banana flavor even for a hefe. This isn't my favorite style but this is the best beer I had at Gordon Biersch.

The second in the line from the 6x Sampler at the Rockville Restaurant. Hazy (almost opaque) yellow in the glass with a nice creamy head that left a moustache on your lips. Nice "banana" hops in the nose. Soft carbonation and a drinker-friendly taste that featured a touch of wheat smoothness and the aforementioned banana. Actually, a very drinkable and enjoyable rendition of the style, though nothing particularly complex about it. By contrast, the Roggenbier (see review) was as if the flavors of this beer had been multipled 10x.

Poured a cloudy straw yellow color with 2 fingers of foamy white head into a Weizen glass with no lemon slice. Nice retention yielded some good lacing. Smells of wheat, clove, banana, lemon, and pepper. Tastes of lemon zest, banana, clove, yeast, bread, peppery spices, and a touch of cut grass in the finish. Medium in body, smooth with lots of banana and spice flavors and a nice balance. Refreshing and easy to drink, a good example for the style.
