Poured from a tap into a hefeweizen glass. Poured a honeycomb flavor with about an inch of foam that stayed for awhile. Smelled sour with a touch of citrus and wheat. Highly carbonated for a hefeweizen. Had a caramel taste to it. Not that much of a taste compared to other hefeweizens.

12 oz. bottle served into a weizen glass. Pours cloudy and on the orangey side of things. Inch of white foam settles out in a couple minutes, holding a light cap. Seems a bit light in carbonation for the style.

Banana and orange on the nose with some wheat notes and a bit of spice. Void of any sourness. Flavor follows with citrus and banana, pleasant without too much sweetness. Creamy in feel as the carbonation is more evident there than on the pour. Spicy and bready on the close.

Seems a bit more balanced than their Trader Joe's version, guess they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot too much.

I had this one on tap at the Bolingbrook GB on 2/10/2009.

A= This weizen poured a moderately cloudy golden yellow color with a 1.5" snow white head. The head quickly settled to a skim and left very little lace behind.

S= The aroma was a bit faint and sulphuric, but there was a nice fruity estery quality to it. Moderate bubblegum with lots of banana present.

T= Tasted very clean for a yeasty beer, with obvious malts up front with a light lemongrass citrus note just prior to the expected estery banana and clove.

MF= Medium bodied with a great crisp carbonation feel.

D= Though hefeweizens are still not my favorite style, this one grew on me and I order it regularly now. Very drinkable.

A: Cloudy golden hue. 2 finger foamy white head. Big bubbles, too. Disintegrates slowly. Leaves a smattering of carbonation on the surface. Some nice spider web lacing remains.

S: Wheat, lots of yeast, and lemon citrus. Hints of indistinct sweetness, too.

T: Tastes like it smells. A nice twinge of sweetness accentuates a subtly yeasty wheat with just a touch of lemon.

M: Very light, crisp, and refreshing. Nothing harsh here. Great, soft finish.

D: Good clean drinking. Well-balanced.

Atmoshpere is really nice. Nice hue, great head, and a really nice balance of grains, citrus, and sweet. Flavor has a great clean well-blanced grainy nature, with sweet and lightly bitter accents. Overall, this is a great quaff.

Bottled on date of 01/14/13

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, rustic orange with an off-white near 2-finger head. Fair retention. Spotty surface. Not much in the way of lacing, but not unusual for a hefe.

Smell - Citrus, bubblegum, banana and clove are are all there, and in abundance. This might be the most aromatic hefe I've ever had.

Taste - Clove spice, citrus and banana upfront and throughout. Bubblegum is hard to find on the tongue. Distant citrus pith bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with lively carbonation. Maybe too much. Semi-dry finish.

Overall - Hard to believe I hadn't picked this one up before. Regardless, this is a commendable example. If the carbonation was a tad less prickly and with a touch more bubblegum found in the flavor as it is with the nose, this would be right up there with the best of them. Regardless, don't miss out if you see this. Grab one!

While I am typically incredibly particular when it comes to American brewed Hefeweizens, I must admit, this one caught me be surprise.

Poured into an Ayinger hefe glass, it looks and smells just as a solid hefe would.

Taste and mouthfeel are almost spot on with German brewed hefes: solid notes of bannana, bubblegum, citrus, and a hint of earthiness from the yeast.

Drinkability is increadibly high, I enjoyed it over and over again while watching Groundhog day last night.

At 6.50 a 6pack, I am cruising through these.

Oh and an incredibly legible bottle on date of just a month ago, I think that freshness is definitely helping it out!

a pretty stale herbal hef. with a rather strong banana clove in the nose but not a rotten quality. color is in moderate and not particular malt unique. quite dough and works out to be about as close to keller beer by sierra Nevada. not as thick though. would have to say that its a solid american hef.

From Kansas City Restaurant

Appearance: It has cloudy hay like body with a small but creamy white head. The lace has a nice retention to it.

Smell: It has an aroma that is on par for this style. A decent banana and clove esters.

Taste: I thought was a little light but still good. There are some lemon/orange tones with banana and mild peppery clove.

Mouthfeel: Light but silky with average carbonation.

Overall: A good American variant.

This beer poured out a golden color with a white head. The aroma had hops and some other elements, but nothing stood out. The taste had hops, but the body was weak and the finish just didn't have the feel you would expect in this style.

On tap at the Southwest terminal at LAX. Seems to be the only place I drink Gordon Biersch

A: Golden pear on the dark side of the spectrum. Very cloudy and unfiltered. Head started very nice and full, a creamy mass of light tan bubbles.

S: Wet grass, biscuit and jasmine

T: Starts with white corn, vanilla and some yellow squash. Floral hops take shape leading with jasmine nectar, dandelion and lemon grass. Banana comes next, not aggressively but more along the lines of banana bread. Finishes with lingering banana, cloves and nutmeg.

M: Medium body with just a touch of carbo tingle.

D: This is Gordon Biersch’s best traditional beer by far. Quite good.

I was expecting something a little bit more bland from this company, but this isn't bad.

The lacing and clear color of this beer are nice.

The smell is of some banana phenol with some mild cloveyness in the back. The banana dominates. The beer maintains the characteristic of wheat, by having a clean underlying malt back bone.

This one could be a bit more crisp and refreshin, however I'm sure that a fresh bottle or a sample on tap would be much nicer.

Give this one a try.

at the gordon biersch restaurant at SFO (San Francisco Int'l Airport)

disappointingly served in a conical pint tumbler.

very cloudy but very deep, straw yellow color with tan wheat tones. some head which fades to wisps. splotchy lacing here and there.

some fruity (pear and cider) aroma, clove-like spice, hint of banana. yeast and bread notes are faint.

flavors are similar but leans towards bubble gum. malty note. bitterness is mild. hint of acidity.

decently smooth, not too thin. slightly fizzier than i'd like

still decently drinkable. nothing to seek out however.

Ok, I will start this review with a story:

When the Giants won the world series, I was in San Francisco at Gordon Biersch watching the game. I drank a lot that day and when I got this, I kept saying it tastes like bubblegum. My friends all said I was wasted and my palate was destroyed. I didn't think I was that inebriated, but I stopped saying it.

I saw this on the shelves and I had to buy a bottle to see if I was really that drunk. You know what? This still tastes like bubblegum. Boom! Vindication.

After that, it really is a mediocre Hefeweizen. Not much complexity. Aside from bubblegum, it tastes like all other Hefeweizens. Not something I will buy again now that I feel vindicated.

When poured, the color was hazy golden yellow, with a medium amount of foam and nice lace on the side of the glass.

The smell of spices and yeast filled the nose with a pleasant aroma, with just a hint of fruit.

The flavor was of yeast and spices, with a hint of banana. What a pleasant surprise from Gordon Biersch. This to me is there second best bottled beer!

Consumed some time ago at a friend's place. Poured into a pilsner flute glass out of a 12oz bottle.

Pours a sunset orange amber complete with tons of bubbly carbonation in the glass and a cascading off-khaki head about 3-4 fingers high. Definitely shows itself to be bready and thickened with each swirl, and carbonation holds on relatively well in the glass right here. Doesn't look too unfiltered, but still is quite authentic to style if I've ever seen one. Carbonation lasts a good long while. Lots of lacing is left behind. Extremely well presented.

The aroma is definitely quite on-par with classic Bavarian weissbiers, with some key differences. Vibrant notes of citrus, caramelized banana, light clove, and bubblegum. Lots and lots of bubblegum. Almost to the point of adding extra sweetness that throws off some of the flavors. Nevertheless, the banana esters are spot-on, in spite of the fact that there's a toasted bready grainy character that overpowers the cracked wheat flavors, as well as some sharp bitterness. This is a hard type of beer to brew well - the flavors are all there, but it's almost refined so much that it's verging on a weizenbock, in spite of the low ABV.

The flavor is far more delicate and not as bubblegum forward, which luckily leads to a more satisfying drinking experience. Caramelized banana and toffee abound, combined with toasted wheat, some clove and dried lemon, as well as spices and a bit of bubblegum. Quite malty at the finish, but the yeast and wheat seems to cleanse the palate at the very end. Contains a ton of carbonation, but luckily this aids in making the flavor feel more creamy and filling overall. As most Gordon Biersch offerings, this is quite easy to drink, and does well on its own or paired with food.

I still hold the firm belief that this brewery, no matter how large it may be, brews some of the best German-style beers in the country, and this is no exception. It may have some quirky things going on, but it's quite authentic flavor wise and in feel, and definitely kicks all of these thinner, overtly citrusy wheat-focused beers in a heartbeat. It's pretty great stuff overall - worth checking out for the price.

Appearance: Banana yellow. No orange tint like in a lot of hefeweizens I've seen. Ok head retention and lacing as well.

Smell: Bananas. A very clean smell.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Very clean and crisp overall. Again, mostly bananas. Almost tastes like berries and lemon in the aftertaste as well.

Drinkability: Good, refreshing hefeweizen, especially when it's warmer outside.

Overall: A very worthy attempt at a hefeweizen. Thumbs way up!

Poured a cloudy straw yellow color with 2 fingers of foamy white head into a Weizen glass with no lemon slice. Nice retention yielded some good lacing. Smells of wheat, clove, banana, lemon, and pepper. Tastes of lemon zest, banana, clove, yeast, bread, peppery spices, and a touch of cut grass in the finish. Medium in body, smooth with lots of banana and spice flavors and a nice balance. Refreshing and easy to drink, a good example for the style.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into weizen glass.

A - Murky yellow/gold/brown with about 3 fingers of head. Retention is decent before falling to a solid, thick cap. No lacing.

S - Moderate banana aroma with an almost overpowering citric snap. Slight plastic-like aroma on the back end. Decent but a little weak.

T - I've taken about half the glass to decide what I think of the taste. I want to like it, and while I don't hate it, it really doesn't bring anything new to the table. Big hit of generic citrus with a slightly tangy edge. Tanginess grows and grows until late palate where it becomes something like orange juice with a squeeze of lemon. Late palate also gives way to some mild to moderate phenols, though these flavors are indistinct (aspirin and chalk maybe?). Banana comes through only in the aftertaste. Semi-dry overall, with none of the early sweetness that I would expect.

M - Appropriate lively and crisp carbonation. Body is light, maybe a smidge too light.

D - After Gordon Biersch's exceptional dunkelweizen, I guess I was expecting a little more from their hefe. This is a great beer for summer quaffing, an easy drinking thirst quencher. However it reminds me more of tangy American wheats (Oberon, perhaps?) than the sweetish hefeweizens that I'm used to. I do wish the bubblegum/banana notes were more evident, but this is a decent brew overall.

Appearance was very good. Super-cloudy gold in an appropriate weizen glass. Excellent head and retention, can't ask for too much more.

Smell was of clove and banana, appropriately German yeasty aroma.

Faint banana and clove rounds out the taste with a hefty wheat backbone. I thought it was great, but some of my companions noted an unappealing celery overtone flitting about. Maybe it was the power of suggestion, but I started to taste it a little. Still a quality hefe.

This is really carbonated and filling. I like this style sharp, but this is perhaps slightly too sharp.

Drinkability - I'd suggest it, if you were to visit Gordon Biersch. A credible German Hefe brewed right here in the U.S.

This was the best of the ones I tried from this place. Had a good full color to it, with a hazy redish tint with a decent head. Smell was of honey and bananas, but the taste was mostly bananas. It was fairly low in carbonation as well. Fairly typical hefe.

A glass at the Gordon Biersch bar/restuarant at Dulles Airport in between flights.

Served in a proper weizen glass, it is a hazy golden ale, a bit light in appearance but not highly filtered. Half inch head dissipated quickly to a cap and ring with no lacing. The cap gets recreated with each sip.

Aroma is light with some lemon, with some wet hay, and light peppery spice.

Tastes lemony, with clove notes and a trace amount of bubblegum. Spicy and dry finish. Not bad, but not remarkable either.

Mouthfeel is fizzy, cleansing and refreshing.

A drinkable beer, I could have had another. But nothing remarkable overall.

Pours a completely hazed orange straw with an off-white head that soon recedes into a ring. Smell is a 50/50 blend of banana & bubble gum. clove notes hit on the first sip and dissolve slowly into a spicy, but sweet plum and gum finish. Quite a rich hefeweizen, but tasty. Glad to have sampled it - and the two surnames that make up the company name are pretty solid for the career they have chosen.

A pint at the Admirals Club in LAX.

Cloudy amber, decent head and lots of lace and carbonation. Aroma of strong bananas, mild cloves, and hints of sneaker (the rubber part). Strong carbonation front and middle, lots of bananas and a bit of spice. A bit of bitterness on the back. Not bad, perhaps a bit on the heavy handed side.

This was the best American Hefe-Weizen I have ever had so far. The closest to my German favorites. It has the nice golden hazy appearance - the dense rocky head, the aroma and flavor of cloves and banana, quenching wheat tartness, and the spritzy carbonation that tickles my throat. I had me a good time with this one. I was back in my neighborhood pretty late that night, riding my bicycle around in my underwear.

[Appearance]: Deep dark golden color, very cloudy, a little carbonation, fairly nice head, leaves a small amount of lacing on the glass.
[Smell]: Cloves and banana in the nose, bready wheat, slight hint of nutty.
[Taste]: Cloves and banana up front, bready wheat, I could detect some hint of roasted nuts, slight citrus in the mid-plate, vanilla bean at the end.
[Mouthfeel]: Medium bodied, carbonation is very light, very smooth and clean finish.
[Drinkability]: Very drinkable. One of the better American made Hefeweizen.
