Pours a thick frothy head with good retention and a clear orange color.

Smell is of noble hops and pilsner malts. There is a hint of DMS in the nose.

Taste has some problems. There are caramel malts to balance out a pilsner malt sweetness. The hop bitterness is decent as well to balance, however there is a little bit of DMS problems. There is a bit of a grassy and cooked vegetable flavor.

This beer is crisp and refreshing.

Pale styles of beer are less forgiving. This is not a good example of the style.

Appearance: Gold/copper with a decent sized but quickly disappearing head. Noticeable carbonation.

Smell: Bready malts, grass, caramel.

Taste: Caramel, honey, grass, and a hint of floral hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied and creamy. Not much of an aftertaste.

The Verdict: Good beer. A solid, well balanced bock offering. Nothing out of the ordinary maybe, but exactly what it’s supposed to be. You really can’t ask for more than that.

I can't attest for the sight of this beer since I am drinking it out of the bottle next to a fire, but if its anything like the rest of the beer I imagine it being quite average.
Again drinking from a bottle doesn't do smell justice either, up front there were some lemon notes mixed with some bready caramel. Maybe a bit of alcohol.
It taste...ok. A touch spicy, mainly sweet. The malt is prevalent in this brew, although the citrus lets its presence know right away. I have to say finishing this beer there was an isopropyl taste during the last few drinks. Not a real great after taste.
Overall I would only recommend this beer to someone who likes trying different bock style beers. It did come in a variety 12 pack so I'm hoping there is some gold left in it.

Appearance - Pours a crystal clear golden orange with an off-white finger width head. Good retention, gives way to a broken layer of suds across he surface. Very little in the way of lacing.

Smell - A strong bready aroma and lesser caramel intertwined with prominent notes of freshly cut grass.

Taste - A noticeable undercurrent of grassy, floral hop bitterness gives depth and balance to this brew rich with caramel and bready malts. The hops do well, peaking mid-taste, but don't quite have the punch to overtake the stronger malt qualities. The finish is sweet, with lingering caramel and hints of honey.

Mouthfeel - Certainly heavy-bodied as far as lagers go. Carbonation is moderate, but still delivers a solid crispness and bite to the lips.

Overall - If there's one thing Gordon-Biersch does well, it's lagers. This one is no exception. A clean, fairly crisp and well-balanced maibock with nice character. A fine example of a style that's not so common in the U.S.
