On tap at the Gordon Biersch restaurant at Reagan Airport. Served in a Hefeweizen-style glass.

Appearance: Golden yellow, thin white head, some strands and islands of lacing noted.

Smell: Crisp, herbal, floral, apple, German noble hops.

Taste: Clean malt, crisp, hint of apple, German noble hops at the end. Simple, nothing special.

Mouthfeel: Spicy on the tongue, good carbonation, but it stuck to the teeth a bit.

Overall / Drinkability: Went well with a meal (crab cake sandwich) and drinkable enough I could see myself having another. Not a bad - not amazing, but not bad. Not the most flavorful pilsner, but much more flavor than others I've had.

On tap at the Myrtle Beach location. Served in a pils glass. Was honey colored with a small white head. Smelled of pine and flowers and toast. Saaz hops are obvious when you take a sip. Bitter, spicey, maybe somewhere in there is some sweetness from malt, but I don't really detect any, just hops. Finishes very crisp and dry. Not a huge fan of czech pils, maybe is the saaz hops, but not a totally bad beer.

On-tap at the San Jose locale, on to the beer:

Orangish colored, almost leaning into copper. Solid foam sits on top of the beer, which retains solidly and leaves a little lace. The nose is a dissapointment. It offers some cider and grass, the former which leaves me scratching my head. It does get better. Cooked cereals in the taste (crap!). But seriously, it's a small improvement over the cider, and with a sharp hop bitterness and honey to distract, it's not the worst Czech-style lager I've put into my body. The body is boderline light/medium with a low level of crispness.

It's okay. Then again, the San Jose locale also had an export lager that I tasted awhile back with a similar cooked cereal problem. I hope it's an isolated problem.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into my pint glass. This beer pours a clear, medium golden color with a nice fluffy white head about 2/3 inch thick when poured that eventually settles to a nice thick ting lining the inside of the glass. Not much lacing here. Aromas of herbal hops and a nice malt presence. Has a light bready, somewhat caramel malt sweetness flavor upfront that gives way to a floral hop bitterness flavor. Also a big of grassyness. Good balance of sweet malt and hop bitterness here. Has a crisp, medium bodied mouthfeel with low to moderate carbonation. Has a clean and dry finish. Easy to drink in the way a beer like this should be. Practically spot on for the style too. A very good, solid beer here!

Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Pilsner
Purchased: Single from Publix, Huntsville

A: Big white head fills the top of my pilsner glass, showing good retention and very good lacing. The beer is a clear, golden color with lots of bubbles seen coming up from the bottom.

S: Aromas are a good balance of bready malt smells and noble hop floral, grassy notes. I also get a slight fruit/lemon aroma.

T: Clean taste features a light to medium hop bitterness coupled with malt breadiness. I do get a little bit of sourness as an off flavor, but it is not a big detraction.

M: Moderately carbonated and crisp as a pilsner lager should be. Aftertaste is lightly bitter.

O: Overall I thought this was an easy drinking, warm weather pilsner. Nothing earth shattering but a good summertime thirst quencher.

Glass - Pilsner

A - Golden colored brew with lots of visible carbonation, high clarity, and a 2-finger head that created a little volcano on the top. Head retention seems great for a Lager. Some nice lacing as well.

S - Apple/pear skin upfront. Lemon and leafy hop notes. Cracker malt notes. Grassy throughout. Simple and clean.

T - Apple/grape/pear upfront. Very grassy mid-finish. Finishes with soft cracker, dryness, low bitterness, and leafy hop characteristics.

M - Lite-medium bodied, medium-high crispness, a bit oily from the hops.

O - I think this is a decent Pilsner. It's refreshing, no off flavors, and the price is perfect. Nothing outstanding about it but I'd pick it up again to toss back at parties. Worth a try. Cheers!

I had this at the brewpub in Tysons Corner with some delicious brunch in the early afternoon. It pours golden with a white head. The smell is malty and clear. It's a crisp brew, with some amount of hops, and a dry taste. I wasn't a fan of the mouthfeel, too dry.

Appearance - Pours a semi-clear golden yellow with a white 2 finger head. Decent retention, but the resulting lace is spotty though everpresent.

Smell - Picking up faint aromas of caramel, grain and some floral or grassy hops.

Taste - Starts with some light bread and caramel malts, then a little grain and some floral hops come into play. Aftertaste turns to a grassy bitterness which fades steadily.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium body. goes down like silky butter. Carbonation is a tad lacking, but the buttery smoothness more than makes up for it.

Overall - For a pilsner, this is damn good. Light enough to drink on a hot summer day, but full and flavorful enough to satisfy an ale aficionado such as myself.

Draft at Gordon Biersch San Diego.

A: Burnished yellow gold with perfect clarity and a mountain of soapy white foam. Retention is outstanding and lacing is everywhere as the head slowly recedes. Impressive.

S: Spicy Saaz notes are prominent, blending with floral aromatics. The nose is herbal and grassy and clean. Light biscuit with doughy malt.

T: Grassy and lightly spicy with pervasive herbal notes. There's a firm upper moderate bitterness blending with doughy malt. The finish is crisp, dry, and clean.

M: Light body with high carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry and sticky.

Overall: A nice Bohemian Pilsner. Best beer I've had here.

Ba Review #154
Served On: 04/13/2012
Glassware: Rolling Rock Pilsner Glass
Labeled ABV: -
Date/ Code: 2/12/12

This was in the 2012 spring mixed 12 pack from Evergreen Liquors in Frederick ($14.99).

look: Poured a very clear and effervescent pale yellow. Head was 1/2 finger of white foam. The head reduced down to a thin coating within seconds.

Smell: The nose was a bland malty note with some faint aroma hops. That was about it.

Taste: First was the bland malts. Then a quick burst of citrus. Finish was fairly clean with a nice bitterness.

Overall this is probably one of the better Pilsners I’ve had. It's nothing real exciting, but that’s to be expected with the style.
