The head pours big and mean yet deflates in little time, actually breaking apart in islands(?) on the surface. Light, yellow-gold color - right on. Sunbeam haze.

At about 5 months old, I'm sure the contents of this bottle has lost some of its hop zip (among other things). But, lo and behold, we still have a solid, vibrant floral (Saaz) hop presence, but yes some long-faded spice. Same could be said of the taste as well. The firm floral flavors are balanced nicely with a firm, full malty foundation, of which some residual sweetness lingers for a good stretch (damn, the floral lingers a heck of a lot longer though). Not necessarily the cleanest, crispiest feel, but still pleasant all the same.

The store I bought this at appears to have kept it in the fridge the whole time. But how many people on the east coast have heard of Gordon Biersch? Aside from probably loss of spice in the hop profile, I'd like to believe I caught this on the tail end of its quality window. Pretty decent. Definitely tastes like a faithful take on a Bohemian pilsner.

A - classic yellow-gold; pours with a thick 2 finger head with moderate persistence and thick lacing

S - good pils nose; a little bigger malt backing than anticipated; earthy and a little spicy

T - clean pale malt and noble hops followed by an earthy note and malty sweetness; all brought back in line by hops and yeast firmness

M - medium weight - perhaps a little big; good CO2

D - quite drinkable; session-worthy

I've had this on-tap and my review would be about the same as for this bottled version.

A= golden with big fluffy white head

S= more nose than usual for a Czech Pils, some nice hops florals and grassy malts with biscuity notes and even a slight prune-liquor hint, it seems. Light pepper or spicy ginger whiffs occasionally.

T= a boost over the traditional Czech Pils style which is usually not nearly as bold, they've cranked up each flavor a few notches. Somewhat dry and crisp, nice hops florals and some adequate bitters, nice grassy malts. Light banana hints early on.

M= slightly dry and crisp on the tongue with hints of the hops florals, and malt sweetness that could be lessened for my preferences.

D= session, probably good with most anything where Pils would work plus maybe with some roasted meats as well.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #42 (Jul 2010):

Out comes a beautiful-looking Pilsner with a big head and a crystal-clear golden hue. Herbal, floral and spicy hops aroma meets the dried hay-like malt. The fluffy and crisp light-to-medium body contains delicate hopping with a long, drawn out floral flavor. The maltiness packs a lot of flavor with bread and grassy tones. The hop bit- terness shows some sharpness and spice to balance this brew. An excellent go at the style with a bit more body and less crispness than expected. Still so very drinkable.

Very pale yellow clear colored beer. It has a pretty clumpy head with some decent lacing. Very few carbonation bubbles after about 1 minute past opening. It has a clear bready smell. It is very mild though and hard to pick up unless you are almost touching it. Taste is like most pilseners. Some more eccentric hops at work here, not just traditional pils hops. I'm having trouble picking it out. It's medium bodied with medium carbonation. I'd say it's a decent beer, but not the beer I'd order if I wanted a pils

very nice example of a pils...

straw golden yellow in color with a fading head....and moderate lacing...

smells funky like a pils should....im guessing its from the saaz hops...or some other noble hop...

taste thirst quenching....with noticeable hop bitterness...

not too dry on the palate....very "wet"

i could drink these all summers day long

Sampled at Gordon Biersch restaurant in Dallas, TX. Pours deep-golden hue. Aroma is of hops with some malt in the background. Body is medium, crisp. Spicy hops dominate the palate with biscuit malt provide some balance. On the whole, it is nice Pilsener.

Appears golden with a sizeable white head.

It smells of bread, toasty malts, citrus fruit and molasses.

It tastes much like it smells. The taste is of sweet tasting bread, citrus. The flavor ends with a nice mild bitterness. This has more of a bread like malt character then most Pilsner I have had.

Carbonation is around medium.

This is well balanced and drinkable so I could drink a few of these.

Overall this is a nice Pilsner. It is nothing amazing but it is nice tasting and above average.

I had this one on tap at the restaurant in Tysons Corners, Virginia while waiting for the most recent "Harry Potter" movie to start.

A: Poured a crystal clear, straw-colored brew with about a finger or two worth of head, with minimal lacing.

S: Yeasty, wheaty, and with a tinge of mild sweetness.... everything a nice German Pilsener should be.

T: Very similar to the nose. Medium bodied, with the taste being substantially full and juicy. The mild hop bitterness was very pleasant.

M: Thick enough for this style, nice bubbly carbonation, and no sticky residue left behind.

D: Nothing complex here, nor do I think it was meant to be. I'm glad I ordered this one and I'd definitely get this again.

Pours a bright clear gold with a medium sized head. Nice lacing on the surface. Smell is mild malt and a hint of herbal hops. Taste is light malt with fairly low sweetness. Some herbal and grassy noble hops. Clean and crisp. Medium bodied. Easily drinkable. A decent US made pils. Pleasant overall.

A- pours a light-med. golden color with a thin white head which dissipates quickly leaving a moderate lace in my pilsn glass

S- smell is big grassy, spicy hops up front with notes of bready malt coming through

T- crisp hop bitterness from the beginning, spicy hops pretty much dominate the palate with some bready cereal coming into play midway, some diacytl in the slightly soapy and sweet finish

M- a semi-dry, slightly thicker than light body with ample co2

D- a nice authentic representation of this style, very drinkable

Gordon Biersch Czech Style Lager has a thin, slightly off-white head and a very clear, golden appearance. Carbonation is moderate. The aroma is very faint, but one can pick up a bit of barley malt. Taste is good, with breadiness, but the hop level is lower than what one would expect from reading the bottle label or the website. Mouth-feel is light, and the beer finishes crisp and dry. Overall, I really enjoyed this and would certainly have it again.

12oz bottle into a pilsner glass, bottled 8/10/2010 and sampled about 6 weeks later.

Looks nice in the glass, but is lacking any real head which has to knock down the score. It's a clear straw/gold color with a touch of orange and very active carbonation.

The smell is really nice. The spicy, floral aroma of the Saaz hops are really popping, and there's a touch of grainy malt underneath. It just lacks a bit of depth but is very prominent and expressive.

Wow, this is an excellent Czech Pilsner, defined by its smooth and crisp malt character. It's sweet and just a touch grainy. The hops are earthy and give a touch of spice at the end. The beer finishes with sweet malt and a touch of bitterness, but it's fantastic in it's absence of any alcohol whatsoever. Just shy of perfection, something I've never experienced in this style but imagine fresh pilsners in the Czech republic must offer.

The mouthfeel is crisp and clean with light body and perfect carbonation. The finish, described above, is great. Just a smidge watery otherwise really great. This is a great example of the style and should be more appreciated by the BA community in general. It's the exact opposite of barrel aged, but somehow, when a brewery nails this style, it feels somehow innovative. A beer I would happily drink again and again.

Pours a clear gold with a magnificent white head that stands tall and frumpy in the pilsner glass. Aromas of pilsner malt are mostly honeyish. Flavors are straightforward: honeyish pilsner malts with a leafy hoppiness that comes through on the midpalate and finish. Overall a beautiful beer to look at, whose taste is not bad at all.

Light clear orange pour. 1-finger head with faint retention. Faint lace as well.

Honey sweet, bready nose.

A - Poured a clear, golden-yellow color with a thin, white, bubbly head of foam. It left soapy sheets of lace.

S - It smelled of floral notes, grains, caramel and mild vanilla notes.

T - It tasted of sweet caramel and grains. Almost honey-like flavors. It had a spicy and grassy hop bite to match the sweetness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and dry. A light bodied pils.

D - This is a nice representation of the Czech Pils. It is spicy and sessionable.

Smell: Hoppy aroma of Saaz and/or Tettnang hops. A fairly strong scent of hops is a good thing for a pilsner, and is quite inviting.

Taste: Cracker like malt character. Hops are present providing a good deal of bitterness. Spicy/Herbal hop sticks around the whole time.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, biting, viscous, well carbonated, medium bodied.

22 oz tap pour into a weiss glass at Gordon Biersch Brewing Co. in the San Francisco Airport, CA. (I imagine that since they don't brew in the airport, this location would be providing them with the beer.)

A - This pilsner is insanely carbonated and clear golden yellow with a foamy white head with fantastic retention to the pile but little lace left over.

S - Despite the mild scent, what's there is decent. Nice light pale and pils malts tango with noble hops to give it a crisp nose.

T - Pale malts and noble hops take a back seat to a hard mineral water flavor. Fair resemblance of a classic pilsner but it doesn't hit the mark with flavor.

M - This refreshing pilsner is light-bodied and crisp with a sharp carbonation finish.

D - Their Czech Pilsner is pretty easily drinkable but there isn't much there. A decent offering that leans towards being pretty capable but just doesn't quite make it.
