Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a clear light golden color with a billowy white head. The head has a lighter level of retention, fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – A slightly sweet fruity aroma of pear and peach as well as a little bit of sweet honey complement a decently strong bready smell nicely. Along with these aromas are some hoppy smells of a light herbal and grassy nature producing a rather nice smelling brew overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a somewhat crisp cracker like flavor mixed with a bit of graininess and a lighter sweetness of a fruity nature with some pear, white grape, and apple. Quickly some hop flavors come to the tongue, with a lighter flavor of grass and hay being the strongest. As the taste advances these hop flavors get stronger in nature all while the fruit flavors fade some. The fruit however has a slight resurgence at the end however, with the mix of tastes leaving a moderately sweet, but still rather crisp and clean, lightly hopped, malt flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is quite thin with a carbonation level that is very high. The combination of the two really create a wonderfully crisp drinking beer, complementing the blend of lighter fruit flavors, malt, and grassy hop flavors rather well.

Overall – A fairly nice kolsch. Nothing super extraordinary, but very enjoyable none the less.

My friend is drinking light beers these days, so he graciously gave me this one (of my favorite style of light beers, no less) to review. Poured out of a 12oz bottle into a stange glass. Bottling date is 03/28/13 - a bit old, so I'm anticipating some oxidation.

Pours a beautiful kölsch, actually - a gold amber color complete with a frothy head that resembles bubbly soap suds. I absolutely love it when "delicate" types of beers do this, and the extra carbonation to boot adds a sparking wine-like appearance to the entire product at hand. Some lacing, as well as a persistent head that never gives up throughout consumption. An excellent take on the beer, but I wouldn't expect anything lesser from Gordon-Biersch.

The aroma is definitely sweet (from the bottle's age, no doubt), but there's no off aromas to speak of - only highly sweetened ones as a result. Aromas of white Muscat grapes, honey, caramel, marmalade, and stonefruit immediately hit the nostrils. Some grassy hops persist, as well as a slightly funky apple aroma from the yeast. The grains are hidden in terms of delivering a cereal backbone, but the grape aromas are full-fledged here. This is a much better take on the style compared to most American-made kölsch - no weird banana phenols, nor too much of a plain grainy flavor. A little too sweet, but I'd imagine fresh that this is even better.

The flavor is immediately awash with a crisp grainy character that follows some of the sweetened fruits and funky yeast, as well as some fresh grass from the hops. Lighter Muscat grapes this time around, as well as pears, apples, and light honeysuckle. Then (oh no!), some off metallic notes resembling stainless steel. This seems to vanish as it warms up, but it took me off-guard. Otherwise, the hoppy character is nicely done - Americanized, that's for sure, but nevertheless refreshing. The grainy texture at hand is crisp and warm, as it should be. Not nearly as sweet in the flavor compared to the aroma, and a bit thin at the finish, but definitely easy to drink and refreshing.

For the price, this is a great American-made kölsch. It's great that a brewery as big as G-B is able to deliver solid offerings that are well-intended takes on many of the different regional styles of beer throughout Germany. I could definitely have this again, although I'd want it fresher next time. Good stuff through and through - always a welcome treat after plummeting through lots of strong beers or a after a bad day at work.

Poured from a 12oz standard pressure-cap bottle into a pilsner glass in high elevation Kalispell, Mont. Reviewed live.

A- Aggressive pour. Thick, five finger white head with middling retention. Active carbonation atop a light golden body. Quick moving bubbles, high clarity and an overall nice Kolsch looking beer. Color is maybe a little darker and richer than normal Kolschs, but hey. The fluffy head sticks around longer.

S- Golden malts, apples and crisp hoppy aftertaste. A little hoppier than the usual Kolsch.

T- Very tasty, crisp flavors.

M- Smooth, buttery and medium-bodied.

O- Fine example of the style. Americanized, but good.

Bottled On: 4/10/13

Pours a nice clean/clear pale yellow color, nice carbonation, with a fizzy white head, not much sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with some hop notes, slight citrus note. The taste is malty, with some grapefruit notes, slightly hoppy/bitter. Medium body. Overall, a good thirst quencher, but I would not buy again.
