750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Nice white head. Lacey surface. Thick collar.

Smell - Herbal hops. Pale malt. A little yeasty.

Taste - Tons of malt. More estery. Herbal hops. A little bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel - A little heavy for the style, but this herbal bitterness helps. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Tasty if a little harsh. Very herbal and bitter.

Poured moderately aggressively into a Brewer's Art 12oz goblet. Nice hiss on popping the top. My last Hopfenstark was a bit flat, so I am pumped.

A: Golden yellow to light amber with rather clean, white head. Approximately 2 fingers. Lingered. Nice lacing.

S: Arguably the high point and somewhat distinct from the taste. Sweet with marked fruit notes. Slightly more subdued herbal notes.

T: Best described as herbal and dry. Floral. Reminded me a bit of Ommegang's Fleur de Houblon. Surprised me a bit given the smell. The hops are relatively present for a saison and reading prior reviews, a saison/IPA is an appropriate description. Little to no funk. Overall, not a stereotypical saison flavor profile. Drank lightly for a 7% (my bottle was not 6.5% as noted above in the header). No perceivable burn/warmth.

M: This was nice. Moderate carbonation. Certainly looks and feels like a saison.

O: I enjoyed this. While not exactly what I think of when I envision a saison, it drinks quite nicely. I feel it is well represented by a "saison/IPA (or BPA)" classification. The herbal component is unique, but not unwelcome. Interesting beer. Would drink again.

Hazy dark orange, thin surface layer of foam that disappears after a minute or two. Random bits of spotty lace in the glass. Looks a little lifeless.

Phenolic clove, citrus peel, herbs, slight banana sweetness.

Earthy bitterness, overripe fruit, odd musty sweetness. Not sure it all really works together. Low carbonation gives it a flabby feel, phenolic spiciness takes hold and the odd sweetness is kind of like spoiled fruit, and there's a mild astringency in the background. Overall a little messy, not really worth the pricetag. Might try a higher rated one in the series, but this one was a bit of a letdown.

5/12 notched on bottle

A - Cloudy peach skin amber with a small white head.

S - Citrus with peppery spice, bready malts, earthy and herbal.

T - Bready and sweet. Citrus, yeasty, spice, earthy funk that is touch vomit like.

M - Medium to full and a touch syrupy. Low carbonation.

D - Not as dry or refreshing as I like in a Saison combined with the earthy hint of vomit do this one in for me.

Recently stumbled across my notes from The Festival 2012. Lets do this!

A - Poured a nice cloudy deep rich golden hue with one finger of sudsy head that fades to well, nothing. Hmm....

S - Aromas of big citrus (predominantly orange peel and flesh), light typical spice notes (corriander) and bready malts.

T - Taste is similar but with much less citrus. Light spice notes and peppercorns. Wanting more citrus.

M - Mouthfeel is spot on for a saison, crisp and clean.

O - Overall, bit let down here. The nose was nice, but when told this is a saison/ipa hybred and I don't get the IPA, its somewhat of a fail for me.

Thanx bth86 (my going away present):

Bottled May 2012:

Into a pint glass:

A: hazy golden amber body, two finger white foamy head, some carbonation is seen rising through the haziness

S: a refreshing combination of lemon - slightly zesty/spicey, also funky tartness

T: smooth through previously mentioned flavors

M: medium, surprisngly sessionable despite a slightly higher ABV than what I`m used to for this style, just smooth over the tongue

O: wow, this is a nice saison, was slightly worried while looking at the bottling date, but the tartness is tamed a bit, I would have this again

A huge thanks to Caudalie. This has lasted 8 months in the cellar, finally had the urge, and cracked it tonight. Typing and sipping right now.

750 ml bottle, 7 % abv, must Be a change from the above. Light blonde colour, partially unfiltered, Belgian style. It has a slight citrus aroma, low hop notes, light feel on the tongue, hops on the after taste, and taste, taste is a dry sweet, perfect example of the style, and even though 7 % abv, the alcohol is nearly missable...

I don't no why it lasted so long in the cellar, but now I regret that I am half way down the bottle. I am not regretting at all that I am not sharing this though!

Next time my old College chum comes from Ottawa I am thinking I am getting him to pop over to Gatineau and getting some bottles of this and others from the Brewery!

Thank you, Deadbolt82.

Appearance. Pours a nice gold with a little amber and two fingers of thick, slightly off-white head with good retention.

Smell. Bright and sweet light fruits, apples, pears, some sweet belgian yeast and honey. Smells great.

Taste. Saison yeast and some bitter earthy and grassy hops with some bready light malts.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body with below medium, fine and lightly prickly carbonation.

Overall. Another great beer from Hopfenstark. Lots of hops, maybe a little too much for me as far as the style goes, but still very nice and easy drinking.

750ml bottle poured into tulip 10/8/12 thanks papat444 for sending me the bottle

A hazy but glowing a peachy amber with lots of visible bubbles but just a short lived finger of foam that leaves zero lace

S some yeasty banana with citrus and bubblegum, some peppery bready notes and leafy earthy tones, smells strong and pretty solid

T sweet orange marmalade and a little booze I didn't smell, slightly sour fermented fruit and just lacking a little something the nose had going for it

M very slick and fairly full, almost syrupy, aftertaste of spicy yeast

O a 750ml didn't last very long, you might forget the 7% under a hot sun so be careful

a slight improvement in the most important department might get this one up too a new level. a solid beer for sure and I'd drink it again no questions asked

Beer is golden blonde in colour. Small white head, gone quickly. No lacing.

Smell is floral, with light fruit and a grassy scent. A bit faint but nice.

Taste is herbal, with light fruit (tropical), yeast and grassy hops. Fairly bitter aftertaste.

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Pretty good.

Overall, not bad. I enjoyed it and would have again but not one to search for.
