Enjoyed on tap at Mondiale 2009. Served rather cold, still flavorful at this level of abv. A touch sour and well malted, cloudy appearance, medium mouthfeel, and noticeable lace. Was a very pleasant beer, though the others I have had in the style added up to something I was looking forward to.

Draft: Poured a hazy dirty beige color beer with a large foamy head with good retention. Aroma of wheat malt with light pleasant tart notes. Taste is also a mix of refreshing wheat notes with great tart notes though not as dominant as I would have liked. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation. Well done thought more tart notes would have provided more enjoyment.

I had this on-tap at Max's. Poured into a sample glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy yellow color with a layer of fluffy white head that fades to just a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Extremely sour. Vinegar notes along with a lemon like tartness. Very light with some mild grains.

Taste: Just about the same as the smell. Lemon, vinegar, and grain. The finish is a bit yeasty.

Mouthfeel: Light body with aggressive carbonation and a very dry finish.

Overall: A very good session beer. Quite easy drinking. I would have liked a more biting tartness.

Enjoyed at Station Ho.st.

Looks like lemonade, almost limeade. White foam reminds me of the topping of lemon meringue pie. Nice lemon aroma (using that word often). Ultra tart yet doesn't linger too long which is good and makes it refreshing. Full on flavor of lemon. Feel is amazing and alive. Could drink gallons of this.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

A: The beer pours a very clear straw color, which is somewhat strange for wheat beer. A finger of soapy white head.

S: As is proper for a berliner, lots of tart lemon and straw. There's a mild popcorn note and a bit of wheat. A mild bacteria/lacto aroma, too.

T: There's nice sour lemon and lemon zest to go along with the wheat. A mild sweetness to balance out the acidity. Very clean and enjoyable.

M: Light in body with a medium to high carbonation.

O: This has a very nice tartness and is quite refreshing.

On-tap at Station Ho.St in Montreal

Beer is a very cloudy yellow. A small white head dissipates quickly.

Nose strongly contains tart lemon. Also some wheat. A clean but sour smell.

Taste is quite sour- lambic levels rather than Berliners that I am familiar with. The sourness has a real lactobacillus flavour, a bit yogurt-like. Wheat and tonnes of tart lemon. Very refreshing.

Light bodied, moderately carbonated. Seems more carbonated than it is, if that makes sense. Refreshing.

Overall, quite nice. Great on a summer day.

A huge thanks to Deuane for bringing an unlabeled 750ml bottle of this back for me after a trip to Hopfenstark. Poured into a tulip, this brew appears a perfectly clear straw yellow color with 2 fingers worth of white head that appears and slowly fades down to a thin film across the top.

The aroma of this brew screams lemon sweet tart candy. A fresh lemony essence is found right upfront that blends into a grainy sweet smell of wheat. A light touch of yogurt is present that blends with a bit of fruity quality that is somewhat reminiscent of pear/apple skins. This is a very fine smelling take on the style. As it gets warmer, it has a mild vinous quality that is very appealing.

This brew is one tart bugger. A flavor of lactic lemony quality provides minor puckering power over-top of fruity undertones of pear and apple skins. Just like the aroma led on, there is a bit of grainy sweetness from the wheat inclusion and a hint of greek yogurt that really grows and gets exaggerated as the brew warms up. The aftertaste is vinous in such a way that all I can think about is gewurztraminer grapes.

This is a light bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation. It is clean, super tart and excessively drinkable. The finish of this brew just snaps and is so crisp. It is exactly what I look for in the style. I could easily crush glass after glass of this without restraint. What a fantastic take on the style. My only gripe is, dare I say this might be just a little too tart for the style. At the time of this review, I have sampled over 50 different takes on the berliner weisse style and this is without a doubt in the top 3. This is right up there with Schultheiss and Southampton's normal berliner weisse. Fantastic. I am uncertain if this was a brewer's gift to Deuane via hand-bottle or what since I never saw a bottle review for this before but holy hell this needs needs to be made in mass quantities. People who like berliner weisse NEED to try this.

Pours a pale white color with a one-finger head into my glass. Looks a bit cloudy.

The aroma is full of citrus and wheat in the nose, much like a typical weissbier.

Taste is light and full of citrus and wheat. A bit sweet and I didn't detect much if any clove.

Mouthfeel is light and full of lingering citrus and wheat. Very refreshing and low in alcohol. Easy to drink.

Decent. There aren't many examples of this style regionally and this would be nice to have in a bottle around here.

On-tap at City Beer Store, in San Francisco.

Berlin Alexanderplatz is a foggy, lemon-skin coloured beer that, although sunny to begin, doesn't exactly brim with highlights because of its haze. A beer of such high acidity and low protein content tends to make for notoriously poor retention, however the head on this one was monumental to start and stayed nearly as impressive throughout.

Both the style, and indeed this beer, are defined as having a sharply sour, somewhat acidic character in the bouquet. Whether you can be sure of not you're going to enjoy the beer, there is the distinct sense that you're in store for something unique. It has a tart, lemony character with only a bit of malted wheat perceived beyond the lactic acid.

Berliner Weissbier have a flavour that could easily appeal to cider, champagne and white wine drinkers. It doesn't showcase much maltiness and definitely no hops, instead a clean lactic sourness and a bit of a restrained fruitiness (cider-like, but cut with a lot of citric lemony flavour). In other words, you don't necessarily need to like beer to enjoy one.

Although the style is definitively sour, the Germans aren't ones to overlook drinkability (indeed they won't even bother brewing a beer unless it has at least some degree of mainstream approachability). These Quebecois brewers followed their lead: this has light body, very dry finish, moderate acidity and very high, refreshing carbonation. Built for drinking!

Hopfenstark figures to maybe be the best thing to come out of Quebec since poutine and this take on the rare, distinct Berliner Weissbier - a style that has been described by some as the most naturally refreshing beer in the world - speaks exceptionally highly to their capabilities. Here's hoping these guys come to a beer store near me really soon!

On tap at Station HO.ST. From notes.

A - Cloudy yellow pour with one finger of white head that went fast. No lace and no retention. It seemed to style, but I never think that any beer looks good without head and lace.

S - Tart aroma, grape, grass, lemon.

T - Way more tart than the aroma would lead you to believe. Lemon candy, grapey mustiness. Lovely stuff.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, tart and dry finish.

O/D - A good Berliner Weiss. Quite drinkable and had a good tartness that wasn't too strong. Good stuff.
