Enjoyed on cask at Volo Cask Days 2010. The clear winner overall of the fest for me this year. 85 IBU stout. I smell C-hops big time. Medium plus mouthfeel. Good c-hop taste with some roast, a cross-style. Opaque body and bubbly head.tasty stuff. Great on cask.

Had again right after the fest, and the smell and carbonation were strange. Was getting much spruce and evergreen firs. More just hitting style (Mondiale 2013).

On tap at Max's tonight.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is unusual and interesting, showcasing vanilla, dark chocolate, light coffee, prunes and molasses. It's attractive, but just isn't an aroma combination I see all that often. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, but is dominated by coffee, licorise and dark chocolate. The beer has considerable underlying hoppy bitterness as well, and really dominated the dry finish in this beer. Mouthfeel is full and long, with a lingering bitter finish. Drinkability is good, though the combination of sweetness and licorise wears on me after a bit. Nevertheless, this is an impressive, nicely crafted beer from this talented Canadian brewery.

Hopfenstark Greg on tap at the almighty Max's in Fell's Point, B'more, MD, served in a regular pint glass. Labeled as a "Fresh Hop Stout". Interesting...

Appearance: Creamy brownish white head, dies quickly. A bubbly landscape remains after head vanishes, sort of like methane gas emanating from a swamp in Louisiana in a dark, sticky damp night. Lacing is tremendous, of stout quality. Color is black mud like the bottom of the Mississippi near the Gulf of Mexico.

Smell: Faint distant smell of cigars/tobacco. But a very, very mild aroma, almost nothing comes through the nose. Some bubblegum sweetness and kitty-litter pungency. Very unique! Not like a stout, not like a hoppy beer. My wife accidentally inhaled this beer while tasting it and said it smelled like cat urine (I absolutely do not see that).

Taste: Roastiness upfront, like chestnuts on the fire, followed by dry bitterness (hops). Some tobacco leaves, like rolling tobacco after you open the pouch, sweet and slightly dry.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation, medium body, medium flavor, a bit watery at end, but satisfying. Sticky sweet on the lips, slightly hoppy on the roof of the mouth. Finishes very dry, pungently so.

Drinkability: Huge! Easy, not boozy, well balanced, tasty. Great all around. Would love to try again.

On-tap at Station Ho.St in Montreal. This batch has been aged for a year.

Beer is black with a small tan head. Most of the head disappears quickly, but leaves nice lacing.

Nose contains roast malt, vanilla and chocolate. Quite nice.

Flavour is focused on roast malt and dark chocolate, with a bit of coffee. Vanilla. Mildly bitter. Nice bold flavour, but everything is well blended, with nothing dominating. Yum.

Medium bodied, low carbonation level. Chewy. Nice and smooth.

Overall, very nice stuff. I really enjoyed this beer.

Had this on cask at Volo's Cask Days 2010. Pours black with nice tan head, good head retention and lacing. Smell of hops jumps out at me, I was not expecting that. Citrus hops with the roast in the smell. Huge bitter flavour with some mild sweetness. This may be the hoppiest stout I can remember having. Really nice mouthfeel. Possibly my favourite beer of Volo's Cask Days.

Had on tap at Volo
Pours almost jet black with a thick white head that lasts a long time, major lacing left behind. Smells like coffee, burnt malt, chocolate and some bitter hops round it out. Coffee comes through right away on the palate that finishes with a dark chocolate bitterness. Nice weight in this beer, good mouthfeel. Drinks like a dream, ABV is nowhere to be found. I love this style and this may have been my favorite of the night.

On draft at The Farmhouse Tap & Grill.

Pours a frothy black with thick tan head. Nose smells like hazelnut coffee, straight up. Spicy and roasty. Palate is roasty and bitter, like over-extracted coffee. Freshly ground hazelnut and nutmeg come to mind and maybe saw dust. Palate is medium-light bodied and floats the line between creamy and stern. Finish is long but light.

Pretty unusual and tasty.
