As the LI Beer & Malt group descended last night upon this little bar in Kings Park, NY, the Jets were playing the Patriots, and the tap line up was was pleasant and unexpected surprise for the roadside bar. I thought there was at least 18 to 20 taps in a mix leaning towards imports with Palm, Delerium, Spaten, and Franziskaner leading the way.

Finding the reasonably priced taps fresh and in working order, I pressed the complex juke box into motion with a burst of U2 and preceded to order the hot wings on behalf of my gathered crowd.

The service was very good as the bartender seemed to be very attentive, yet was running in a blur through the little L-shaped bar and the supporting kitchen behind it.

Noting the food was good, I nodded to my friend's suggestion of returning with a bigger crowd as the owner came out to make sure everyone was comfortable. The arrival of the owner also brought out the latest Innis & Gunn Rum Barrel ale, which I found to be the right temperature.

It was refreshing to see this little place as a local neighborhood bar that had received and decoded the message about good beer bringing in good customers. It was also cool to meet the owner who wanted to hear my opinion about beers to bring in while I spied the chef sipping pints of Great South Bay's Massive IPA.

I think an apt sub-title about this place would note that good beer had made it to Main Street...

As previously noted,

Several Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts (LIBME) ventured out to check this place from the solid recommendations of several members.

A real gem that you would not think would be a craft beer place. Solid taps with local craft beers, Belgian drafts such as Palm, Kwak, St. Louis Framboise, and Delirium Tremens. All served in the proper glassware.

A nice 2 threads beer they prepare is 70% Delirium Tremens, 30% St. Louis Framboise.

Good pub fare and good service in a comfortable setting. LIBME will be returning for a proposed evening featuring Delirium, Delirium Nocturnal, and Delirium Noel.

Located on the north side of 25A, just east of Kings Park High School. It has gone through a few name changes in recent years, so you may know it as something different. It is the bar next to the Dairy Barn.

The inside features a very large L shaped bar. The interior walls are brick and there is a working gas fireplace. Some seating toward the rear. There is a bar menu as well.

On tap, as of January 2007, is Arrogant Bastard, Blue Point Blueberry, Paulaner Hefe, Guinness, Stella Artois and Smithwicks. The bottle list includes Stone IPA, Wolaver's Oatmeal Stout, Ipswich Stout, Dale's Pale Ale, Spanish Peaks Raspberry and Spanish Peaks Black Dog.

There is Happy Hour 7 days per week, which features half priced beers. So, that $4.50 pint of Arrogant Bastard becomes $2.25 during Happy Hour. That's right - not a typo.

A real surprise as I always took this place for a townie bar. And while it may very well be that, there is some excellent beers to be had. It is the only place that I know on Long Island that has Arrogant Bastard on tap.
