Original review (7-6-07) - The Beachwood BBQ sits at the back end of Main St., just west of PCH. Walking in, it is quite cramped, with just 3-5 seats at the bar and a collection of tables. Luckily, I went here around 4 o'clock Thursday, so it wasn't crowded at all. Their tap list is quite good for 10 taps or so, they concentrate on California microbrews. The only non-California brews they had were Avery's Maharaja and Paulaner's Hefeweizen, no macros on tap. I had a Triple Rock Dragon's Milk, which is disappearing quite quickly, one keg I think, and since I was low on Cash, I had the sweet potato fries, which were quite good (and high in beta-carotene to boot). I did not have a chance to try some of their BBQed meats, I will have to return. The food I had was good, the beer and beer list were exceptional for such a small place, a great place to visit.
Edit (12-23-07): Since the expansion happened I've upped the atmosphere and selection scores.
Edit 5/5/08 - Definitely now my regular haunt, go there at least once, usually twice a week, highly recommended.
Food Edit - I usually have the brisket sandwich during happy hour - a great deal for $5. For dinner definitely try the mac'n'cheese, they use gruyere, yum. The deviled eggs are great. For entrees I'd recommend the wild boar meatloaf in blueberry sauce or venison, I'm a huge fan of game meat, so this is right up my alley. Check this place out on New Year's Eve, Gabe creates some interesting game meat dishes and will always have something special planned.
Update (July 2011) - Lowering the atmosphere score a bit, let me tell you why. It's just gotten so crowded lately, especially on the weekend, it seems the only time I can get a seat is mid-week happy hour. Hopefully Beachwood II can assuage the situation, and make me anticipate a seat instead of standing for the first time in a while, like it was back pre-2010.

The Seal Beach location is the original Beachwood BBQ, and its success is what brought about the Long Beach BBQ and Brewery location. They publish their current tap list on their website through an internet connected "hopcam." They typically have 24-26 beers on tap at any given time, which are fairly small production beers that beer geeks will appreciate. I've been to beer bars all around the country, and this truly is one of the best in terms of beers selection and food.
The food: this is straight up BBQ, with a fancy twist. Nothing pretentious, just a twist that shows the owner's background in the restaurant business. Beyond the regular menu, they have a "wild game" menu that involves things like ostrich, buffalo and alligator. Unfortunately, one of the best things -- no, THE best thing -- that they have had on the menu was recently take off: the mushroom stew. I hope that enough people chime up on this decision to get them to bring it back. It was epic.
Beers: They do a good job of representing most beer styles on their tap list, and they often get some pretty rare kegs on the board. The funky and sour selection isn't quite what it used to be in years past. I believe the owner is now hoarding most good sours for the biennial sour fest, which is a week long amazing event. They also regularly do small beer/food pairing dinners with breweries. They're not cheap at all, but they're small, intimate, and good.

In Orange County for business so based on a recommendation from you fine BA's I drove up to Seal Beach. I really liked the location of Beachwood on main street and just a couple steps from the beach. Also I have to say they have a very cool logo. I had their chips and dip (good), andouille sausage (good), brisket (meh), fried green tomatoes (meh), and blue cheese grits (tasty). I honestly expected a little more out of the brisket, I've had much better from a smoker parked outside a gas station near my work. Service was fine, waitress was very friendly and the beer selection was quite good. Several hoppy IPA's to choose from, several Beachwood beers, and some Belgians as well. I would definitely go back but probablyjust to drink and get some grits, I'd skip the brisket.

Seal Beach Beachwood is a cool place, just expect a small venue with a great brew selection and great service. It may be a hole in the wall but the tap selection is excellent and the cellar list is spectacular. With that said, be ready to shell out a bit for your favorite cellared brews (IE Black Tuesday '09 was $80/bottle.) If you don't want to dive into the cellar, plenty of great taps are available and the serive is top notch. If you’re here, you had better have some BBQ....it is phenomenal. Smoked chicken wings, bleu cheese grits, and Bourbon barrel aged hot sauce are just a few of the delicious items on the menu. This is a must stop for food and drink, none the less, a gorgeous location.

This is our go to place when we are in So Cal. We never miss going there and drove over 70 miles one way on our last visit for dinner. The food is great and includes everything from BBQ to gourmet bistro. I always have the BBQ and really love the Pulled Pork, Brisket dinner or Ribs. The smoked asparagus is fantastic but the BBQ beans are a little to spicy for me. My son loves the Wild Mushroom stew on the starter menu. The BBQ chicken was raved about by our friends on our last visit. Just about anything you order you will love. They also have a huge beer list that is varied and changes daily. The service is always friendly and they go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. Value for what you get is very reasonable.
