I poured this pitiful beer into my tumbler at 40 degrees. The beer was cloudy and flat looking right off the bat. Absolutely no head at all. It even smelled aged which I did not knock off points for. Don't really know if just got a out of date beer or what, but I'm a first impression guy so its goodby to this one nope not buying again.

A: Pours a ruddy auburn with no head. There is
not much active carbonation.

S: Smells like the inside of a wine barrel, with
distinct bourbon and oak aromas.

T: The oak and bourbon notes detected in the
smell convey to the flavor. The woodyness
of the brew is very good...almost too good.
By too good I mean over the top. This taste
would be a 4.5 if it were a little less
severe.

M: The body is nothing to write home about but
also doesn't detract from the overall style
of the brew.

D: Very drinkable beer especially with a nice
steak or fruit/cheese. The 7.8% abv
qaulifies this tommyknocker as a sippin' brew
for me.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. III Issue I:

We could split hairs all day long about barrel aging and aging beer on wood chips, but that's an argument for the wine industry, not for beer. All that matters is the end product, right?

A clear tawny brew, ample suds to wrap some lacing around the glass. Just a thin shell of wood character around the malty nose. Smooth and a little creamy within the full body. Toasty, sweet maltiness blankets the palate; mild hopping with the clean alcohol giving a hand to balance. Some oak buds from the toasty character, which adds a pleasant drying tone. Very clean, with a deep bready and dried grass graininess that pushes far into the aftertaste.

A little too drinkable for its size--not a bad thing, as the oak really does work. A solid rendition of a bock.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear reddish amber with an off white head that quickly diminishes to a thin film and collar that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is a little subdued - sweet caramel malts, smoke and vanilla.

The flavor is kind of watery and subdued. It has some sweet malts and smoke and some pepper. As it warms, more flavor comes out. The alcohol is well hidden. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with some sharp carbonation.

Overall, a decent beer, but a bit pricey for what you get. I liked the smokey notes.

Hopefully this brew has some agin' potential, because it's pretty rough pretty much pure oak and whiskey soaked malt character a tad sour with a strong unrelenting vanilla oak and charred barrel note. It's almost like extract vanilla and oak chip aged thang going on. Appears a bright ruby amber hue with a large tan khaki head dwindles rather quickly leaving behind even fine bubbled lacing clinging to my glass. Aroma has more oak barrel whiskey edged effects going on, charred wood and vanilla phenols grabbing my nose air with a touch of burning sensation from the alcohol content. Flavor is pretty effin' cloying sugary sweet caramel with burnt oak barrel notes and again vanilla extract like toothace candy sweetness going on. Mouthfeel is again cloying I don't really even want to finish it. Body is syrupy with a low almost flat carbonation level that makes the beer feel heavier than it actually is. Drinkability is pretty sorry, not one I'm grabbing for again, why do I do it. Tommyknocker as usual ends in pretty much complete disappointment, this one is no different.

Pours copper with a sliver of tan head. Minimum head retention & lacing

S: Smokey ham, & sweet malt

T; Smokeyness, toffee, vanilla up front. Dryness, toasty malt, & toffee as this warms. Finishes dry, fake oakyness 7 cloying sweetness

MF: Medium bodied with lively carbonation, doesn't work

Drinks alright, the oakyness seems forced. Give me the regular butthead any day. Maybe this will age gracefully?? The ABV is is well hidden

S = Very slight hints of bourbon with vanilla way in the background.

T = A bourbon flavor is upfront, but it quickly fades to blandness. The middle and finish seems to be void of other flavors. The finish is basically a thin bourbon flavor. No alcohol detected.

MF = Medium body with low carbonation. Smooth and semi-dry.

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed in this one. No complexity at all. Worth trying, but I'll not go out of my way for another. I personally like the regular "Butthead" offering over this one.

Pours a light orange/red, very transparent, with almost no head.

Smell isn't anything exciting and the taste doesn't do much for me. There's something in the taste that I really can't pick out. Whatever it is, it's distinct; not necessarily good though.

Perhaps part of my disappointment is that this was right next to the Tommyknocker Imperial Nut Brown Ale which I have enjoyed previously. In a rush, I thought this was an oaked version of the same. Once I got the bottles home, that's when I realized it was a bock.

12 oz bottle. A pretty clear light amber pour with a quickly dissappating whitish head. Just a hint of lacing as it goes, but a bit light bodied. Not overly impressive smells of some sweet malt, brown sugar light red fruits. Tastes quite similarly, but a bit understated and watery. Alchohol is well hidden. Finishes...blah. Probably pretty drinkable, but I don't think I would intentionally drink a whole lot of this. You could find similar for less $. The regular seems quite a bit better, did they really barrel age this one?? Not bad and worth trying but at the same time, just not that impressive.

A - Two fingers worth of fizzy tan head that quickly settles leaving a full rich and varied lacing... Lots of carbonation, some of which quickly rises and some of which settles along the sides of the glass... Light brown caramel brown color with a faint reddish hue... Good stickiness on the sides of the glass...

S - The oak is evident right away... Bourbon scent is strong immediately following the pour and quickly fades... Brown sugar... Caramel... Hint of vanilla...

T - Oak and bourbon dominate... Vanilla... Caramel... Toffee... Some faint spice notes in the form of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove...

M - Just the right amount of carbonation... Medium bodied... Hides the 8.1% ABV exceptionally well... A tad on the thin side... Smooth... Rich...

D - I'm a big fan of barrel aging, but I'm not sure it lends itself to the Doppelbock style... Not terrible, but the pieces don't seem to fit together...

Poured from a 12 ounce brown bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. The bottle has a notched date of October 24th 2008.

Appearance: A dark ruby red with a small tan head. No carbonation.

Smell: Lots of malty sweetness. Very mellow oak.

Taste: The maltiness is rather light in the taste for a doppelbock. The oak is most present on the finish.

Color: pours light brown. sits deep copper with ruby hue

Smell: very malty with obvious melanoidins and toasty notes. hint of caramel. some oak is present. just a tiny hint of smoke

Taste: good maltines with melanoidin and bready notes. hint of caramel. mellow presence of toasted wood. alcohol peeks through from middle to end. smoke is faint. finish is sweet with melanoidins and caramel.

Mouthfeel: low-full body and smooth with low carbonation

Notes: very delicious take on the style. rich and full flavored. sweet and stealthily strong. this was their '09 batch which if i remember correctly is not nearly as smokey as the '08

A - nice deep redish brown color with a somewhat week white head

S - good sweet vanilla aroma with a slight alcohol smell and an interesting rubbery smell; very interesting

T - slight smoky component, strong earthy taste and again the vanilla is the most prominent thing coming from the oak and a little caramel

M - the mouthfeel is a little week, not a ton of carbonation and so-so body

D - its a smooth drink very interesting there is a lot of stuff going on but nothing steels the show well balanced

deep dark brown with a good two inches of off white tan colored head. This faded and nestled own leaving a thin film and some side glass lace. The smell was nce and smoky with a bit of an earthy grain mixed in. A touch of some caramel and sweetness as well. The flavor was very tight. Crisp clean and efficent flavor, lots of malt, nice smoky flavors with a touch of caramel. A great smooth feel with no sense of the alcohol at all. I could have easily had another of these.

Smell: mostly dopplebock, only a hint of oak and vanilla.
Taste: very nice. All doppel up front, and a strong oak and vanilla finish. Vanilla tasted fine to me, not at all the artificial vanilla extract I'm seeing in many reviews.
Overall: not a primo example of oaked or doppel but I a good beer nonetheless.

A: The beer is clear but very dark amber in color and has some brownish hues along with a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short bright beige/tan head that quickly died down, leaving only a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of oak and vanilla are present in the nose along with some hints of caramel.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell and is dominated by flavors of oak and vanilla and has complementary notes of caramel and hints of dark fruits. Bits of malty sweetness are also perceptible.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The oak definitely improves the smell and taste of the regular Butthead Doppelbock. It's very drinkable for the style as it isn't overly malty and masks any traces of alcohol from the taste.
