The Angry Planet comes in a golden-amber pour with a huge head that doesn't seem to be going away. Lots of lacing. Pretty impressive. The smell has some fruitiness to it, but not much else.

I've heard that this is organic, but don't see any evidence on the bottle. I'm not sure if that's the issue, but I don't feel like the hops are coming through quite enough for an APA. It's still got a nice taste with a solid malt backbone, but we need a bit more kick out of the hops. The mouthfeel is pretty solid: substantial but not overly complex.

The taste is actually fairly pleasant here, but a bit more of an APA-style balance between hops and malt would turn this from an above-average beer into a fantastic one.

Appearance: Clear red-copper color with a finger amount of head that holds very nicely. The lacing is also very good at sticking and holding to the glass.

Aroma: I picked up some orange-grapefruit from the American hops, but with some kind of funk-tang I can't identify.

Taste: Grapefruit comes through on the taste with some of that funk. A slight breadiness was easier to pickup when warmed up more. Hint of toffee like carmel. The bitterness is harsh on the tongue, distracts me from the flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation and light body. Again the bitter harshness does something that seems to affect the feel.

Overall: The harsh bitterness was unfavorable and the hop aroma was less than expected. The malt character was difficult to pickup until warmer. For the style it seems a little off with a few things.

Poured from a 22 oz brown bomber into a clear glass mug. No clear freshness date. Purchased by my brother Greg at a Minneapolis-area bottle shop. Reviewed from notes.

A: Dark copper-red with 1-2 fingers of pretty rocky, off-white head with good retention and ample lacing.

S: Decent aroma with grapefruit and honeysuckle combining with some lemon and floral notes. The maltiness doesn't have a lot of character in the aroma. There is a "homebrew" tanginess to the aroma.

T: The tanginess follows through to the flavor as well. The beer is not well enough attenuated and leaves too many sweet malt sugars which give this beer a tangy, light lemonade flavor with much more bitterness. I think this beer would be a lot better with less bitterness, namely less early- and mid-boil hop additions and more late-boil hop additions to increase the hop flavor without the big bitterness. There is also a midl vegetal flavor that would also improve with less early hopping. THe maltiness is mildly crackery but is not interesting enough to carry the big bitterness.

M: Average carbonation with medium-light medium body and not enough dryness.

O: Not a good or great example of the style, merely middle of the road. Has some attenuation problems and drinks like an average homebrew not a refined craft beer.
