A- Fatlagret Porter is as jet black a beer as anything I've seen. Head is compact, tan, and lasting.
S- The aroma is full, complex, and vinous. It's rich and fragrant, giving the scent of ripe, juicy, black cherries. Fatlagret's vinous quality is supported by a wonderful oaky aroma.
T- The mouthfeel is very full but not as heavy as I expected. It's complex and boasts a definite roastiness. The flavor starts out deeply, darkly malty. The maltiness moves quickly into flavors of dried cherries supported by notes of leather and tobacco. And then comes the roastiness, threatening to blast the other flavors out of the water but stopping shy of actually doing so.
O- Overall this is a wonderful beer. It's big, bold and complex but stops shy of being heavy and oppressive with its great roastiness. Fatlagret seems to know where that line is and stay well clear of it. Instead we've got a strong, Baltic porter that is complex, delicious, and drinkable.
