500 ml bottle from Top's Liquor when I was in Tempe, AZ, on to the beer:

A bit chunky on the pour from the sediment. It is ebony in color, typical for a porter. The head size and retention are solid. There is a lot of cheap fruit flavor in the aroma...could this be an older bottle? A bit of an undertone of roastiness reminds me this is a porter, and black licorice notes are found. Taste...cherry and processes strawberry candies, dominating in a field of licorice and roasted chocolate bar. Flavors don't work together. This is a porter, right? Mouthfeel is mild, medium bodied, with a bubbly carbonation that pops out.

This beer must be better at the source than sitting on the shelf of a store at $7.99 a pop at room temperature. A little off-putting in larger doses, but hey...it's 10 times better than my experience with Bruge Stout.

50cl bottle, best before 25.10.15 (2 months off). Pours a very dark brown, opaque brew, with a thin tan head with no retention. Smells like an aged porter, alright - heavy on dark fruit, cherries, chocolate and coffee, and a mellow note of roasted grains. The taste is quite balanced - roasted grains, cherries, dark fruit, dark chocolate and coffee. Smooth mouthfeel and almost no carbonation.

Hand delivered fresh from Norway thanks to good friends. No specs per the website. 6.5% ABV per the bottle. Batch 719 BBF 5/1/2015

Pours out to a hazy dark brown, forming a modest tan head with very good retention and lacing. Carbonation is moderate, ~2.5 carbs. The nose is of carob, dates, black walnut, and a touch of roasted malt. Mouthfeel is smooth, with a well balanced acid bite from the hops and carbonation and a medium body. The taste is a recap of the aroma. Lots of carob, some dates and prunes, a touch of light roast coffee, some flavor hops (Willamette?), a touch of chalk towards the finish, and roast and hops lingering in the finish with a well balanced bitterness. No off-flavors, aromas.

This is a well balanced traditional porter, kinda reminds me of a lighter version of Founders Porter. Many thanks to Erland and Ani for this one!

500ml bottle, with that same amusing fingerprint overlay pattern that suggests someone (with a large hand) gripping the label.

This beer pours a solid black, with faint basal cola edges, and three fingers of puffy, frothy, and densely foamy beige head, which leaves a decent array of bonsai tree lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.

It smells of well roasted bready caramel malt, a touch of dry cocoa powder, bittersweet coffee, licorice root, faint, almost sour lactic notes, and leafy, somewhat vegetal hops. The taste is gritty baker's chocolate, lightly toasted caramel and pale malt, charred coffee beans, tart generic black fruit, spoiled skim milk, a bit of fleshy dry nuttiness, and further earthy, weedy, and moderately vegetal hops.

The bubbles are fairly evenly distributed, and mostly benign, the body on the lee side of medium weight (a bit of a cardinal sin for the style), and smooth, in a halting, sort of pithy manner. It finishes off-dry, the malt thrashing through its death throes, the cocoa and coffee carrying on as if they were camping out in a Starbucks, and that vegetal astringency hung out to dry, but making a lot of noise about the fact.

I don't know exactly what puts the 'Norse' in this Norse Porter, so all I can do is point out the deltas between it and the standard-bearers (for the American and English varieties alike). HaandBryggeriet hits a fair lot of the normal notes, but it really comes down to two things - its unbearable lightness of being, and that weird green veggie persistence. Not something I'd recommend, if you're looking for a world-beating example, I'm afraid.

Color is dark brown with tan head leaving a little lacing
Dark fruit chocolate alcohol coffee in the smell
Dark malts, some coffee and chocolate notes in the taste
Mouthfeel is ok, not too much carbonation, seems to be missing
Overall this is a decent porter

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with some strong dry coffee notes is very interesting. Taste is also dominated by dry roasted malt with huge coffee notes which are well balanced and avoid entering into astringency territory. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Enjoyable beer with strong roasted/coffee notes.
