OK so this beer is terrible.

The appearance has more yeast than a Belgian Triple and does form some head before it dissipates. Not really what I expected and a bit flat looking but I do like yeast.

The first smells tells me something is off. Way out of balance in the hops and malt department. The malt is way too strong with caramel and earthy tones that remind me of the worst in these "double IPAs". Plenty of hop presence, they don't go unnoticed, but it's very much in what makes an IPA good let alone great smelling.

Opens with a good bit of sugary malt, definitely caramel and then fades into a nice citrus resin like hop flavor then it finishes with what I can only call vodka and aspartame. There is just no saving a beer that does that.

Maybe I'm just having a stomach issue, but this beer burns each time I take a drink. I'm not enjoying it, it's just not enjoyable. Add in I can taste every bit of 9% if not more....

If you like dogfish head 90 minutes AND you were thinking "maybe a poor hop profile and even more malt" is your dream beer. This is a really poorly executed example of that.

Pours clear copper with a minimal white head that rapidly turns to an oily ring of bubbles. No lacing. Aroma of apricots and caramel, candy-like. Good mouthfeel with enough carbonation to make the flavor stand out. Definitely an English-style DIPA, if that makes sense. The label advertises "American" hops, but the fuggles and Goldings are the star of the show. Bitter, spicy, peppery in flavor accompanied by the same strong apricot taste. Sweet finish, but not from the cliche caramel malt. In its stead is a sweet pastry-like taste, not unlike pie crust. As the beer progresses, a nice cedar flavor arises as well. This one grew on me. At first I was skeptical, but I like this Norwegian hop bomber. Just because its not a resiny, grapefruit beast doesn't mean its not a hop bomb, right?

500ml bottle - "Norwegian double IPA", eh? I like their attempt to employ southern US vernacular on the label, i.e. "we recon it will stand...". Cute - cue the Turbonegro!

This beer pours a hazy, medium apricot amber hue, with a teeming amount of billowy, finely foamy, and duly bubbly eggshell white head, which settles just a tad on the impatient side of slowly, leaving some random spatterings of puffy, sudsy, and loosely cobwebbed lace around the glass. Nice bottle-refermentation effects, I suppose.

It smells of rather middling piney, leafy, and earthy hops, a bit of generic citrus rind, biscuity, doughy caramel malt, minty soap, and a strong whiff of booze acridity. The taste is moderately zingy pine and various grocery-aisle citrus hop bitters, which are quickly overshadowed by an earthy, herbal nature, with the grainy, somewhat bready and caramelized malt limping along in the same manner. Decent alcohol integration, though, as in "9% - WTF?".

The bubbles, they be restrained, yet still allow for a tiny bit of prickliness, the body a so-so medium weight, but with an airy, ethereal subtext, that actually lends itself well to unabashed smoothness. It finishes just off-dry, the hops weirdly reasserting themselves, pine branch and musty earth now the order of the day.

A fair bit disappointing, as Euro-clone DIPAs go. It starts off well, but, aside from concealing the 9 points of booze with the best of 'em, doesn't carry off the big malt/hops showdown that we, spoiled on the West Coast Beer Wars (TV rights pending), find lacking. On par with the aforementioned underdeveloped English on the label - I 'reckon' that this here beer just didn't suffer well the lost in translation journey to North America.

A different take of a DIPA, with stated American hops as well as Fuggles and Styrian Goldings. Up front a big body of caramel, with the bitterness felt in the finish. Hoppy aroma. Average looks. Drinkable, but not an amazing hop experience, more of a minty citrus.

Pours a hazy golden color with a decent amount of sediment, topped by a finger's worth of creamy white head. Rich aroma of bready malt, assertive, tangy yeast, and a good dose of hops that are both fruity and spicy. Notes of caramel, clove, and pine pop through at various moments.
Palate is well-balanced up front between lightly sweet malt and tangy hop profile. Citrusy hops assert themselves a bit more before the swallow, and yield a nice, spicy and bitter finish.
The body is on the creamy side, well-carbonated and not at all sticky. While this is not exactly the hop monster I was expecting, it's a very tasty offering nonetheless.

A: hazy amber sits beneath a dense soapy off-white head, decent web-like lacing

S: fresh spruce, faint vanilla bean, big clove notes, some nutmeg, some faint clean coriander

T: cream soda flavors in the back, coriander, some pepper (possibly from the alcohol), some medicinal notes, very earthy with pleasant lingering malt character--slightly sweet, some wildflower notes

M: slightly clean up front that quickly gives way to a nice dense and slightly sticky mouthfeel, extremely round for a dbl. IPA, docking it some points for the density that works against style

D: extremely interesting for the style, big hop component but the malt is definitely given equal attention, too dense for a back-to-back pour like other solid IPAs but really nice/different take on the style, probably inaccurate to label this an Am. IPA

Brewed 20.01.09. BB 20.01.12. Consumed 15.03.11. Batch 206.

A: A glass consuming head evolves almost instantaneously giving me suspicion to believe a wild Belgian yeast strain was used. Soapy and porous was the head, initially 3 plus fingers high but lapses rather quickly per size sliding cleanly down the glass void of lace. A dense murky orange obstructs most, if not all light from passing through, revealing a strong effervesce.

S: Musky damp yeastiness is evident on the nose confirming my suspicion of a wild yeast strain. Cellar like, sour dough and slight hints of barnyard notes. Overall more yeasty then hoppy with a bit of sour musky fruit.

T: Musky barnyard flavor, damp grains with cellar like attributes. Again it is the dominant yeastiness that leads the drink rather then its hoppiness. Sour oranges, horse blanket, sweaty saddle, hospital like phenolics and mildewy fruit, its all here in a yeasty package. The hops are mostly limited, sour fruit, more so then bitter, well restrained, but mostly overshadowed by the heavily handed yeastiness of the drink.

M: full bodied, viscose and bubbly from the active carbonation. A warming of musky citrus and sour fruit is left behind.

D: Have to be honest, I usually like the musky wild Belgian beers, this was very much so, but I had my heart set on a good double ipa helping of hops, which ended a bit in disappointment. Not a quick downer nor of multiple quality, though the 9.0% was as well hidden as the hoppiness. Slow to moderate rate of consumption, best served slightly chilled.

Into a 3F pub glass (thanks Jay), the beer pours orange at first, becoming murky and caramel colored with the last pour. Creamy sticky foam puffs above the rim, and falls like a soufflé.

Spicy and floral notes mingle with a pineapple juice aroma. A sweet citrusy fragrance meets you at each sip.

Rich, earthy, resiny hop character, spicy and moderately bitter. Floral and fruity hop notes come out and linger into the aftertaste. Fairly complex and holds interest. Full bodied, almost to syrupy capacity, but it cleans up the palate nicely. Some heady alcohol presence, mellowing in the middle, and soft florals in the finish.

Sort of a refined take on an American DIPA, it has a nice depth and full range of flavor.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy and murky dirty beige color ale with a medium foamy head with limited retention and some light lacing. Aroma of earthy hops with light citrus notes are dominant though feels a bit flat. Taste is also dominated by tired earthy hops with limited floral or bitter characteristics. Body is full with medium carbonation. Too bad the brewer is ending out of IIPA across the pond as even fresh ones sometimes don’t travel all that well.

500ml bottle into nonic. Note: Brewed 5.05.08. Best before 5.05.11. Batch 50.

Murky amber hue, bordering on copper. A one finger off-white head slowly settles to a thin cap.

Mild hops, hidden behind a strong coating of vanilla. A little bit of walnut, one of the characteristics found in beers over a year old.

The hops at this point are pretty broken down, giving a bit of an herbal flavor, more than a bitter flavor. The malts offer a little toastiness, along with some caramel. Full bodied, and the carbonation is still there.

According to the website this one is aged, and hopped during that period as well. I'm not sure if the brewer intended for the drinker to enjoy a year after brewing, but I haven't found many reviews that reviewed the beer at less than six months old. Either way, this one holds up pretty well, and I would love to try it as fresh as possible.

Picked up at Bier Thirty... Seems pretty pricey for a DIPA... but, "What will I do for a new to me brew?" Poured into my slim tulip... Nice white head... maybe a bit off-white.... nice lacing and retention... the brew is slightly hazed on first pouring and hazy with subsequent pours.

Bready pale malts.. hops show in the nose with pretty traditional spicy English hoppiness.. Some EtOH for sure, but it doesn't seem to be out of line...

Flavor shows the same "English bitterness" that sorta mashes into the flavor with some spicy and odd floral notes.... Floral hoppiness lingers on the late palate... plenty of pale malts carry the palate, but never gets too heavy. I like that the hops can speak without any real caramel maltiness.

Body seems too thick... carbonation is too low... Says Batch #434... Not sure how "old" it is, but it doesn't exactly seem "fresh"... Still though, it is a lot better than many of the American DIPA's I get in trade... Interesting.. and I appreciate the continental hops.

Thanks to Mr Kennedy for kindly donating. Brewed on 24 March 2010. Interesting to see how it fares.

Orange amber with a huge pillowy just off-white head. Leaves a spotty lace pattern and a die-hard cluster of bubbles.

Unsurprisingly, malt forward with baked toffee and caramel in spades. Hop character is odd and hard to separate from the malt, resulting in loads of candied and sherbety citrus notes, especially orange and lemon. Some pineapple also. The booze presence is a little offputting.

More like a Barleywine. Malt character becomes more fortified, producing brandy snap and raisin notes. Also some very tangy malt character. Hop flavour is barely there, but there's still some candied orange.

Thick and rich, which, together with the moderate carbonation presence, just accentuates the lack of hop character and wears you down. A mouthfeel this big needs a lot more to do.

Seems unbalanced and wide of the mark stylistically. Given the age on this I'm probably being unkind and would be keen to do a re-review with a fresh sample.

A- Poured a dark orange color. Nice finger of head on there that struck around. Lacing was present.

S- Sweet, citrusy (a bit of grapefruit, perhaps lemon), floral

T/M- Sweet with a large hop presence that is alarmingly balanced by the malt. It never felt muted nor tame, but it didn't bite at you either. I worry that some hopheads are going to say it was too malty for a DIPA, but imho, there is nothing wrong with having a more balanaced approach.

D- While it was a mouthful and certainly it slowed me down a bit, I never felt like I was not going to finish and certainly never wanted to stop.

Note: It was hard for me to judge how "true to style" this beer was because of its exceptional balance, but I high recommend it regardless of style.

Hadn't seen anything from this brewery before yesterday on my trip to Binny's. Served from a 500 ml bottle into a SN Anniversary Ale glass. Label states brewed on May 4, 2008, and best before 5/4/2011. My guess is that it was bottled on 5/4, as I doubt that it could have been brewed, bottled, and shipped in 18 days. Anyway.

Appearance is cloudy/opaque, and hazy. Poured with a thick, rich head. Good mix of large and small bubbles. Disappears after a few minutes to a thin head. Leaves nice belgian lace down the glass as it's sipped.

Smell is wonderful hops, piney and citrusy. No discernable malt in the aroma.

Taste is like the aroma. Piney, citrusy hops. I let this one warm up a bit after the pour and got a good taste of malt backbone, with the hop finish.

Mouthfeel was good, not syrupy, but coats the tongue and mouth and throat as you swallow. Lip smacking good.

Overall drinkability is expectional. I'll have another. But at 9% abv, not tonight.

Very interesting. A successful double IPA using european hops. Great smell, spice as well as fruit but neither is overwhelming. Great taste, dark fruits but not too heavy. A little too much on the alcohol. I'd like to try their IPA as this is a bit strong.
