I will not say this beer is terrible. I will not say this beer is terrible. I will not say this beer is terrible.
OK so this beer is terrible.
The appearance has more yeast than a Belgian Triple and does form some head before it dissipates. Not really what I expected and a bit flat looking but I do like yeast.
The first smells tells me something is off. Way out of balance in the hops and malt department. The malt is way too strong with caramel and earthy tones that remind me of the worst in these "double IPAs". Plenty of hop presence, they don't go unnoticed, but it's very much in what makes an IPA good let alone great smelling.
Opens with a good bit of sugary malt, definitely caramel and then fades into a nice citrus resin like hop flavor then it finishes with what I can only call vodka and aspartame. There is just no saving a beer that does that.
Maybe I'm just having a stomach issue, but this beer burns each time I take a drink. I'm not enjoying it, it's just not enjoyable. Add in I can taste every bit of 9% if not more....
If you like dogfish head 90 minutes AND you were thinking "maybe a poor hop profile and even more malt" is your dream beer. This is a really poorly executed example of that.

From a 500 ml bottle (batch 434) into a globe glass.
A-A normal pour produces a one-finger head of dense, off-white foam. There is poor retention and very little lacing, unfortunately. The brew is murky and dark apricot in color.
S-There is a lot of caramel here, also some earthy spice, orange marmalade, a bit of mint, and some soapy notes. I also smell biscuity malt underneath and a bit of warming, herbal alcohol.
T-The taste, like the smell, has a lot of caramel, as well as spicy, soapy, bitter orange hops that assert themselves at the finish. The herbal alcohol is potent and a touch warming. It is a pretty strong mix of flavors, as it should be at 9% ABV.
M-The carbonation is relatively soft and, despite the lack of lacing or stickiness of the head, the brew feels pretty dank and oily on the palate. Heft is moderate to heavy.
O-This is a decent IIPA, but not my favorite. The flavor profile is an interesting mix of caramel and spicy, earthy citrus, and while I don't mind a little caramel in my IIPA, this one had a bit too much and the citrusy/spicy hops were overwhelmed.

A: The color is hazy orange and the head is very compact and off-white, of medium hight. Nice lacings.
S: Rich tropical fruits; mainly grapefruits and pineapple, but also ripe oranges and lemon sezt. Caramell malt with some sweetness.
T: Nice balance between the American bitter and floral hops. Then the caramell malt with the suttle sweetness makes the complexity even bigger. Grapefruits and pineapple dominates but doesn't overpower the other tastes.
M: Aftertaste is bitter but also tropical fruity. Body is meidum and smooth while carbonation is held back.
O: A nice one with loads of well balanced tropical fruits.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy and murky dirty beige color ale with a medium foamy head with limited retention and some light lacing. Aroma of earthy hops with light citrus notes are dominant though feels a bit flat. Taste is also dominated by tired earthy hops with limited floral or bitter characteristics. Body is full with medium carbonation. Too bad the brewer is ending out of IIPA across the pond as even fresh ones sometimes don’t travel all that well.
