Odin's Tipple was meant to be a strong beer, but we changed our minds...its still strong but we wont follow the mega strong trend. It should be possible to make great beer without the extreme alcohol potency. Odins Tipple is now approx 11% abv, it’s a dark almost black beer from lots and lots of chocolate malt. Its the malt that contributes the flavor...no added coffee or anything else, Its got a great body without being old engine oil and still very drinkable due to the wild yeast we use. This beer is made with a single strain of wild yeast and the recipe is dead simple.

Thanks to zestar for sending this my way. Served in a Darkness snifter. Bottle is from Batch 210, bottled January 20th, 2009. Listening to some Wagner while consuming this one.

A - A hard-ish pour yields a finger of the darkest foam I've ever seen - darker than Zhukov! - that's an angry-looking red-brown color. It quickly dissipates to a thick, irregular, collar and some light haze. A few splotches of lace are left on the sides of the glass. Body is unsurprisingly pitch black. This beer is pretty intimidating.

S - Upon popping the cap I was greeted by the intense aroma of roasted malts, baker's chocolate, cake, caramel, some char, and a touch of anise and booze as it warms. Nice balance of sweet, bitter, and roast elements.

T - The taste unfortunately loses some of the rich and complex sweetness from the nose, and instead amps up the char, smoke, and roast elements. There's a touch of oxidation apparent as well, and a bitter espresso finish. As it warms a little more dark chocolate truffle comes out, but not quite enough to keep things balanced.

M - Body is medium-full, silky smooth, lower in carbonation, and hides the heat of 11% surprisingly well. There's a bit of residual stickiness but it dissipates fairly quickly. This is the way things ought to be, particularly when drinking from the skull's of your enemies.

D - I dig the 500ml serving size - big enough to share, but still reasonable for one to consume without dozing off afterward. The import price tag is a little steep, but this is is just as good if not better than many of the hyped brewery-only releases. It's obviously a sipper, but one that never grows tiring.

Batch 210 -- Bottled on 20 01 09 (January 20, 2009). Served in a tulip glass. Beer is pitch black and forms a thin head of dark brown bubbles that breaks and moves to the walls of the glass. Leaves some lacing on the glass. Carbonation is moderate and steady, small bubbles.

Aroma is strong, sweet, lots of alcohol in the aroma. Its not hot, its almost liquor like.

Beer is hugely thick in the mouth. not much carbonation but there is a syrupy character to it and TON of late roast, coffee, a little smoke, lots of dark grains. Pretty sweet. Roast is nearly an aftertaste, this is seriously a big beer. Very sweet, very good. I'm not sure I'll be able to drink the whole thing though. Its a lot of beer.

- Dark norse ale 11% abv. Batch 210. Brewed 20.01.09. Consumed 12.05.10.

A: Poured a viscose dark sherry with dark plum tones when hitting the glass and catching light. A dark nutmeg colored head, fairly thin, quickly dissipate to a bare reflective surface leaving no signs of lacing. Some carbonation bubbles gather at the bottom of the glass before quickly getting released into the wild. Labeled as a dark norse ale and wont get no arguments here.

S: The nose was vinous with dark grapes, plums and sherry notes with a dark roasted malting. The 11% is incredibly well hidden. There is a scent of lightly burnt cake breadiness right from the oven. The complexity is kept fairly simple yet the aroma is very smooth and vinous.

T: Burnt currant first comes to mind flavor wise. Again a burnt cake breadiness mixed with a rich espresso bean bitterness. Dark fruit of plums, raisins and sherry notes combine with a soft warmth of alcohol which seemed way below its advertised 11%. Creamer laced dark roast gives this an earthy roastedness with a gentle coverage of burnt chocolate and a wet minerality of coffee grounds for a lacing. There appears to be a bit of fruitiness from the yeast trying to come through beneath the dark malts with just enough umph to make you aware of its presence and give you a general appreciation.

M: Medium bodied, bordering on full, with an oily slick texture that effortlessly slides around the tongue. No carbonation is detected while a beautiful wet coffee ground roastedness ensures for a fade and coating on the tongue.

D: A meal within itself. A dark hearty tripel worthy of consumption by any Norse god let alone mere mortal. Very enjoyable and you don't even notice the 11% making this a smooth downer much more atone to a 7%er.

Deep dark brown. Brown head that goes to ring. Smell is roasty malt, dark chocolate some coffee. Taste is big - roasty, chocolate, black licorice, charcoal and some alcohol. Medium body fine carbonation which is active. Overall a really tasty beer with a big load of roasty flavor

Thanks to jedwards for sharing. Poured one shade shy of black with a kakhi-colored sudsy swirl - no head with just a few spots of lacing revealed during the tasting. Nose expressed coffee, booze, licorice, cocoa and a roasted quality. Taste follows nose; however, an ashy quality also comes out in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel was medium-light, with an easy carbonation - perhaps a little lighter than anticipated, with a little acidity that comes out towards the back. I haven't had much from this brewer, but this was a pretty tasty brew I have to say with a very interesting character for the style.

This is a fine looking stout. Absolutely black with no light at all passing through when held up to the lamp. Even pouring from the bottle it poured like thick ink. Head is medium brown and aproximately a quarter of an inch thick. This looks wonderful.
Smell is quite powerful and very rich with big chocolate, vanilla, cooked raisins, dates and other dark fruits, a bit of wet timber (perhaps a damp piece of hickory) and a touch of alcohol, but nothing like what I had prepared myself for at 11%.
Nearly everything present in the nose is likewise present in the flavour. There *is* a boozy warmth which announces itself about a second after you swallow a sip, but it still isn't as assertive as one would anticipate at 11%. Bitter chocolate, a touch of toffee, some vanilla, dark fruit, this stout seems to have quite alot going on.
Mouthfeel is heavy, thick, chewy, solid...everything I look for in a stout as far as feel goes. While certainly one to enjoy slowly, as stated earlier, I feel this smells and drinks considerably less than 11%.
Without a doubt, a very soldily crafted stout, and a spectacular representation of the style. Well done.

An amazing extra from richbrew! Poured hard from 1pint 9oz bottle into snifter on 4/18. This one was BLACK with a dark brown head that dissappears quick. The nose is wonderful- dark fruit, bitter chocolate, malty goodness and a little booze detected. The taste follows suit plus coffee, roasted malt, a little vanilla, a bit of alcohol in the finish. This treat is full bodied and oily with expected carbonation for an impy. Very very good so drink slow and let it linger

500ml. Batch 210. Viscous black pour with a finger of dark brown head. A dark brew indeed.

Aroma is laden with roasted malt, molasses, darker chocolate and a boozy quality. A hint of pineyness in there.

Big malty taste. Roasty, earthy, a little anise a little oak. Molasses, chocolate and caramel. Espresso hop and oaky booze finish. A lot going on, but not overloaded and well balanced for sure.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, not super thick but palette coating for sure. Carbonation was just a tad prickly, if it mellowed to creaminess this would be great.

Certainly a sipper as it is a bit warming. Not as thick as some, so that helps the drinkability back up a bit.

Expectations were high after reading some reviews here and it did not disappoint. With the price of craft ever increasing, I didn't even consider this all that high of a price either.

Rightly belongs amongst the names listed on the right here.

Poured from the 500ml bottle into a Mauite snifter. Body is a thick, deep black with some chestnut highlights, topped by a small, creamy dark brown head. Aroma of rich dark malt, notes of chocolate and mocha, along with a whiff of peat smoke.
Palate is full of rich, dark malt, with a ton of dark fruit notes up front (prune and raisin). Notes of dark chocolate, mocha, peat, and a hint of hoppy bitterness on the finish. Body is creamy and luscious, an absolute pleasure to drink. This is definitely a slow-sipper, but is well-crafted enough to justify its premium pricetag. A hat tip to the Norwegians for turning out such a tasty offering.

I picked this one up on suggestion of Kane up at Roof Brothers on a recent trip up and decided to crack it open tonight while watching the season finale of "Ax Men".

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Brewed in 2009, Batch 210

Pours a menacing black, oozing out of the bottle very thick and viscously... Slowly forms a 2 inch head of mocha and almost a little reddish as mentioned that quickly disappears to a small ring... Its definitely midnight black for sure, no brown here... Would've liked the head to stick around a little longer and perhaps a little more lacing...

Huge complex aromas here with everything from oak to chocolate to hops here... There's a big dark fruit presence here as well as a big dose of cocoa and hops and also a big smokiness that reminds me of a smoked porter... It's wonderfully complex especially after warming for a bit... There's a deep coffee presence here as well... There's so much going on it's hard to single out one thing... This is very nice...

What a sipper this one is...It's loaded with deep dark roasted malt character, lots of fudgey brownie chocolate, a smokiness that adds a character I've never seen in an RIS before...A little sweet at first but not cloying... A touch of booziness in the mix as well... As I said, this one is a definite sipper... Not one to be rushed at all... This would definitely be a good dessert beer as it could stand alone or maybe with a nice cheesecake or some fresh berries... This is a crazy brew... It's a little on the thin side for an RIS but I'm not gonna punish it too much for that...

Overall, a unique offering from the folks at Haand and one that I would recommend to RIS lovers looking for something out of the ordinary... The smokiness and overall complexity make this one stand out from an ever-growing field of huge stouts... I liked this one a lot...

16.9 oz bottle, batch 210 brewed on 2001.09. Pours a dark opaque black with a smallish dark brown head that goes to a thin film that retains and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, black licorice, dark fruits and alcohol.

The flavor is roasted malts, black licorice, alcohol and a little coffee and dark fruits with a pretty big charred bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth creamy carbonation.

Overall, for the first couple of sips, I thought it was too over the top with too much alcohol and charred bitterness. But as I drank the rest of the bottle, it smoothed out and the flavors blended better and weren't as abrasive. In the end, I liked it. It's a bit pricey for a regular buy though at $10 a bottle.

Pours a viscous, jet black topped by a brick-red-tinted dark tan head. Perhaps the most beautiful head I've seen on a beer.

Aromas of char and smoke up front, followed by crusty slightly overcooked brownies, deep earthy molasses, toasted nuts, and an oak-like sweetness. Delicious.

Deep and complex on the palate, with charred oak, alcohol, roasted and burnt grain, chocolate, and on and on. Thick and viscous, mouthcoating. Long lingering roasty bitterness. Heavy and contemplative, and certainly a sipper.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter.

Well, well, finally decided to open up a bottle of Odin's Tipple. Or, as I shall now call it, Odin's Kkipple. Seriously, Dan is largely responsible for most people in the Carolinas having heard of this beer. Maybe even Georgia. I'm sure he's got some pull there, too. Anyway, at his request, I bought a bottle, so now it's time to give it a shot. Batch 210, brewed 1/20/09.

Classic motor oil pour. Holy hell, this beer is dark. It's an evil looking beer. The tan (which oddly looks kind of red, too) head reaches two fingers, then quickly fizzles away. Put your ear to this beer...it's like Rice Krispies. Or the wick fizzing away on one of those old-timey bombs. The latter is probably more appropriate, as an explosion awaits. Sadly, not much stickage, or this would be an easy 5.

There is a hell of a lot going in the nose of this beer. I don't think my nose is seasoned enough to pick it all out just yet. Honestly, the first smell I pick up is a scotch-ale like peat quality. There's tobacco, wood, thick molasses, coffee, leather, dark (maybe even tart) fruits...maybe other things, something really cool that I don't even know about. Yeah, it seemed like a good time to quote Old School. Back to the nose. It's sweet, sour, roasty, smoky, wild Belgian yeast-y...just the works. So, how's it taste?

Holy freaking God is how it tastes. You absolutely want to drink this one as close to 55F as possible, so you get the full experience. Huge roasted barley, sweet chocolate/molasses/brown sugar, smoke (seriously, this thing has got a bit of a scotch ale vibe). Oh, and not a hint of alcohol. Now how can you beat that?

What's not to love about the texture of this beer? It's thick, rich, oily, has loads of lasting flavors, and is perfectly carbonated. Yes.

Immensely drinkable for an 11% RIS. Of course, maybe that's because it has tons of depth to the flavor, and relies on more than a handle of bourbon poured in. It's truly sad to see the glass empty. Truly one of the best I've ever tasted.

Moral of the story: kkipple knows what he's talking about.

Pours thick and black with a finger of dark brown head. Absolutely vicious looking.

The aroma is sweet dark fruits in the forefront. Some nice floral hoppiness underneath. A large roasted malt profile creeps in as well as some teriyaki notes.

The flavor is an assault of bitter hops, roasted malt, and dark fruits. Fudge brownie sweetness is also quite abundant. The teriyaki I picked up in the nose also carries over to the flavor and provides a bit of a beef jerky/leathery edge. This is an extremely complex beer. Perhaps the sweetness could be toned down a tad, but otherwise exceptional.

The body is full and the carbonation is high and a tad stinging. Drinkability is OK for the ABV, but I am feeling bogged down after about half the bottle. Overall this is a fantastic beer and one worth purchasing if you see it.

A - Very dark, almost black.

S - chocolate, dark fruits, smoke, and peat

T - Very very complex taste to this beer. Dark fruit taste hits you on many levels. Honestly you will have to try for yourself, the tastes is as complex as the aroma. This is one of a kind.

M - A small amount of carbonation with a thickness which is a bit on the light side of a RIS.

D - Although I am rather new to RISs, this is on the level of Dark Lord. It is an excellent.

A - It pours a wicked and sinister silky black with a small and exceptionally dark umber-hued cap of foam. It deserves bonus points (that I am not giving) for the extremely awesome graphics on the label.

S - The smell is great. Aromatic cocoa, charred wood, dark malty-fruity impressions, notes of espresso, and a peppery-spicy element from the hop profile.

T - This is some real deal stuff. The flavor is big and rich; replete with bitter cocoa, smoky and woody impressions, cherry, vanilla, burnt coffee nuances, and the charred sweetness of crème Brulee crust. I will seek this one out again for sure.

M - Thick and rich, but not unreasonably so, and unbelievably smooth.

D - Highly recommendable. Very very solid brew.

A: I love how this beer looks! Pours an inky midnight black with the darkest of dark brown heads perched on top. It gradually recedes to a fat and creamy ring that leaves a fair amount of lace on the glass. Carbonation is incredibly still. When a bubble or two manage to break the surface, it resembles the type of slow bubbles that are released underwater by rotting vegetation.

S: Huge aromas of charred campfire wood, burnt malt, vanilla, espresso, dark chocolate, caramelized brown sugar, booze soaked dark fruit, chocolate covered cherries, rum raisin bread pudding, cocoa, and Belgian chocolate.

T: Exactly as above with the addition of more of an ever so slight, raw booze flavor.

M: Excellent balance. Peppery, dry, and bitter which is countered by sweet, slick, and coating. The finish hangs around for ages and develops into equal parts sweet and savory, dry and slick, and rough and tender. A bit of solvent alcohol, also, that tightens things up and keeps them from getting too sweet.

D: I was so impressed by this beer. I'm convinced that the Haand brewers can do no wrong. Seek this one out at all costs!

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Pours an opaque black as dark as the feathers of Huginn and Muninn, with a slight head of burnt umber that fades quickly into Hel. The nose holds plenty to dark malts, molasses, a tinge of alcohol, darkly brown sugar, a hint of figs, and some subtle smoke. The taste generally follows: the molasses, brown sugar, and malts form the backbone of flavor, with some figs, plums, black grapes, and burnt wheat making up...the rib cage?...and a slight aolcohol burn mixed with toffee, coffee, and nuts forming the rest of the body. This body is quite thick and heavy, with minor carbonation and is as surprisingly smooth as Sleipnir galloping 'cross the air (those eight legs just seem so ungangly...). Though rather (nicely) chewy and with a relatively high ABV, this stout is one highly drinkable brew, suitable to be hand-delivered by the valkyries while being escorted to Asgard. Indeed, the truly heroic will appreciate this fully!

Pours very thick and oily with a dark brown head. You can tell this one's a monster just by looking at it.

The nose is rich with smoke, burnt brownie edges, and charred wood. I'm not sure if it's oak aged or not, but it comes across that way.

Burnt coffee and malt flavors with chocolate and wood come across. Full bodied with some viscosity, the finish is long and warms your entire body. It does pack some heat.

This is a great beer, worth seeking out, and I hope more people get to try it.

A - Picked this up from the CBX. Poured from a bottle into a goblet. Pours dark pinetar colored with a dirty khaki head.

S - Dark chocolate, roasted malt, raisins.

T - Does a good job masking the alcohol percentage, I wouldn't have guessed it to be 11%. Chocolaty with some faint roast coffee bean floating around in there. Some slightly acidic flavor tingles the tongue. All in all a superb example of a RIS with nothing too incredible, just really really tasty and solid.

M - Full bodied, good carbonation yet remains smoother than something that's really really smooth.

batch 210 Brewed on 1/20/09

Total darkness=void of any light with a fizzy dark-brown head and falls a bit with long retention thereafter. This one has an aged, heavy look, oily for sure.

Dankest dark chocolate malt, cocoa, all-spice, herbs, earhty wheat, brown sugar, "Chunky" candy bar, vanilla and some marshmellow's and creamy espresso.

A full and thick beast, a true heavy weight with roastie malt complexity, roasty nuts, chocolate bars but a very mellow, bitter chocolate, not very sweet and with a herbal edge. The hops provide a rightous earthy, dry effect that only come off slightly bitter and is in perfect balance. Malty complexity is huge, roastie, flat chocolate, i could use a hit of sweetness and it lacks the bark berries and fruity edge that i love so much when it appears in huge stouts. Oh well, can't have everything! graham cracker's and dried charred wheat pop out later with even more earthiness from the hops. The heat comes off pretty hot and tingly and it adds a bit o depth and respect. The feel is also chalky, slick, heavy and hot.

lay this beast down for a year or so, it should mature really well!

Bottle purchased from Five Points Bottle in Athens, GA.

Pours black as black can be with a one-finger dark brown head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts, dark chocolate, and molasses, in that order. As it warms the malt flavors gain complexity and hints of dark fruits enter into things.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Roasted malt flavors up front are joined by sweet molasses and dark chocolate flavors almost immediately. Midway through the sip mild amounts of dark fruit flavors - plums and raisins - enter into things and fade out before a mildly bitter endingn.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very nice thickness with soft yet assertive carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass very easily, especially for an 11.0% beer, and could easily have another.

Overall this beer lived up to the (admittedly subdued) hype. A very well done RIS and one that's well worth a shot.

So there I was at my local Green's Beverage Warehouse, getting ready to drop another few bucks into the wallets of Dave / Wes / Joe -- seriously, they should keep a cot for me in the back -- and Joe pulls me aside and says I HAVE to try this new Norwegian RIS that they've been trying to get ever since Bush II left office. Sure, I sez, I like those crazy Haandpeople. I'll buy one. $10 later, this goes into my car.

A. Completely floored. A Patrick Swayze Roadhouse kick to the eyeballs. This beer is DARK. There are only two other beers that immediately come to mind for being this dark: Mikkeller Black and Dark Lord. This is serious stuff. Oh yeah, there is also thick, moussy, 2 finger blood-tan head that will not die, and leaves some lace behind as it oozes along my glass. Fearsome. Perfect.

S. Where do I begin? This is SUPER complex, folks. Serve at 55F, or warmer... it will rock your world as it is currently decimating mine. This is just staggering... behind the veil of (sadly too warm) booze there is malt. There is lots of dark, chewy, decadent, cocoa-clad, burnt, slap-yo-mamma-sweet molasses malt. There is mocha, sour fruit, Belgian-esqe yeast, pepper, currants, green hop, burnt wood, peat smoke (??! No, really), pecan, WMDs. It's kitchen sink. It's Avery 14, Sloth, Westy 12 complex. It also works. The booze is still too bracing... then again, this does have a Norse God on the label.

T. Oh, do I have to write all that again? The shocking thing is, most of what you smell, you taste. Big, big, deep roasty malts, a queer (supposedly wild?) yeast strain that lends vim, depth and some weird, welcome esters (fruity notes.) The alcohol heat is undeniable, and there is actually a scotch-like flavor here (the booze + sweet + peat) that I am LOVING. So deep... so rich... I thought Sloth was good. Sorry, Joe. !Ved Loke's innvoller! This is profoundly, lovingly delicious. I can only imagine what a few years to take the "edge" off would do. Bottom line: if you like your stouts big, bold and complex, run, drive or ski to get this. The over done booze heat and the fact that I've only had this once and it MIGHT be an unusually magical bottle keep this from a 5.

M / D. Almost a foregone conclusion. Odin's Tipple has won my heart. This is thick, oily stuff, finely carbonated, and the boozy, chocolate covered, (smoked) berry flavor lingers long. Yes.

Once in a while, a beer comes along that completely blindsides you and forces you to write overlong, self-aggrandizing reviews. I don't care, this is THAT good. Beats most so-called "Big" American Russian Stouts by a Norwegian mile. Look, I drink beer a lot, and I am correct when I say there are maybe a dozen or so stouts that can stand up to this for sheer Sturm und Drang.

HaandBryggeriet has thrown down the hammer. I hope American brewers take note.

Poured from a 1Pt .9 FL OZ bottle into an imperial pint glass. Batch 207. Brewed on 30 Jan 2009, best for 30 Jan 2013. Obviously a great candidate for putting in the cellar for a few years.

A: Black, and do I mean black. Have not seen any other beer as dark in color and completely opaque. Poured with very little to no head. Foam was there for a few seconds and then fizzed away. Thin ring of foam around the top remains. No lacing.

S: Dark chocolate, dark fruits, smoke, peat, some wafts of alcohol in the nose.

T: Wow, there is a lot going on here. Have not come across another beer with quite the same level complexity as this. For the initial 15 seconds or so in your mouth, you are hitting a different flavor/taste almost non-stop. For a beer this strong, the alcohol is not quite as hard-hitting taste-wise as expected. Bursting with dark fruits-plum, date, raison, maybe some pear also. While I smelled dark chocolate, somewhat difficult to identify it in this cornucopia of flavors. I take that back, it's there briefly. Not exactly sure how Odin's Tipple was categorized as an RIS. To me, this is very difficult to define. Kind of like the brewers decided heck with style, let's just make something interesting. Has almost a concord grape-like taste in the finish. A little bit of a burnt/charred offering in there. And a little smoke. Earthy and moist up front with a progressively drying finish. There are times when the Tipple seems to be a distant cousin of a red wine. Very interesting, to say the least.

Note: let this one warm some more and the chocolate is more noticeable.

M: Slight carbonation and not as thick as I would have expected in a RIS this dark and complex. But pleasing and contemplative, none the less.

D: This is pretty much a one and done, but in a good way. I enjoyed the experience while it lasted. Give it a try to expand your horizons regarding the expressiveness of beer.

pours like a coffee stout, need i say more.

has the malty nose of a stout, but the caramelized carbon aroma that i'm used to is replaced by a strong note of bourbonized plum. the aroma here straddles the line of sweet & savory in a really unique way

it tastes a little simpler, like a belgian quad with smoke, or an imperial stout with belgian yeasty-fruit notes. whichever definition works for you.. take your pick. the beer itself strips away any trace of what i don't like about some super-roasty ris' and replaces it with the trappist-friendly note that i seek out in top-notch american dark belgian-style brews.

like many before me have said, this is a one-and-done, but the craftsmanship is remarkable and the experience is a thoroughly enjoyable one.
