Haand Bryggeriet's Barrel-Aged Porter, aged in Aquavit barrels. 10% ABV (had to look it up, since it's not listed on the bottle).

A: A bit over a finger of cocoa brown head. Slow dissolve. Pours rich, dark brown; black in the glass. Dark golden brown in the dimple. Very little lacing, and it doesn't stick.

S: Light hard licorice candy smell up front. Not a lot of aroma to this one. Dark roasted malt. Soft cocoa. Slight sweet char note.

T/MF: Mmm. The flavors are pretty light, too. Roasted flavor is between bittersweet chocolate and light coffee. Herbal and anise notes to compliment. Very slight char on the back end, and into the finish.

Nothing really stand-out about it, but it's just a nice porter with an interesting twist. Not quite as good as the Odin's Tipple or Dark Force, but still good in it's own right.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass

Bottled 9/15/09 (over 5 years old), bottle count of 2160, batch #225. Purchased in the vintage section at Nikki's in Providence about a month ago for ~$14.

A- Pours a very dark opaque black with a thick quarter finger of mocha head that has great retention receding to a thin layer, carbonation seems to be holding up very well and overall looks great especially for it's age.

S- Milk chocolate, roasted malts, hints of oak, a spirit-like presence (from the akevitt, never have had it so hard to describe) that gives off a little bit of booziness, slight oxidation presence that blends in with the akevitt. Overall holding up nicely, only slight oxidation, still retaining complexity and quality porter notes.

T- Milk chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, plums, cherries, finishes with a slight bitterness, light chocolate covered dark fruits, oak, and akevitt. Only a slight hint of oxidation on the finish that balances well with the dark fruits and roast.

M- A little bit above medium bodied, nice carbonation that is consistent throughout drinking, abv pretty well hidden.

O- I wasn't sure what to expect from this beer but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is. For being well over 5 years old it is still holding up remarkably well showing only slight signs of aging. The akevitt barrels give this beer a nice unique twist and actually work quite well with the porter qualities giving it a nice complexity. This beer is definitely worth trying and it will probably continue to hold up for a little while but I wouldn't keep it much longer.

Bottle purchased long, long ago at West Lakeview Liquors. Served in an Alchemist pint glass. Batch 225, bottled September 15th, 2009.

A - Voluminous dark tan foam loudly fizzes to nothing. Near-black body with a glint of brown at the bottom edge of the glass.

S - Very roasty and anise-heavy, with some strong chocolate fudge and cake notes mixed in as well. There's a mild spruce character that I can only ascribe to the akevitt. Good balance and integration, and well-hidden alcohol.

T - The taste has a bit more of the characteristic Scandinavian char and smoked character to it, but it's not overly harsh or bitter. Less sweet than the aroma, but still a strong dark chocolate and caramel flavor. There's a nebulous herbal character late, but it's not as discrete as in the aroma. Again, the alcohol is well-hidden. Gets sweeter as it warms up.

M - Full-bodied, and quite tannic. There's initially fizzy, harsh carbonation, but it peters out fairly quickly. Some warning, but nothing excessive for the listed ABV. Lingering stickiness on the palate.

D - I'd put off opening this for some time, as when I bought it I wasn't really much into botanical-infused spirits. However, my tastes have changed quite a bit over the years, and this was quite the pleasant surprise. The spirit and barrel influence are mild and work well with the base beer, and it's not over burnt or harsh like other beers from the region. Probably should have tried it a few years ago for better frame of reference, but holding up exceptionally well at the moment. I enjoyed the 500ml bottle over the course of a few hours.

Bottle shared by Mike at Bob's tasting. This is clearly my first time drinking a beer aged in akevitta/aquavit barrels.

Pours pitch black, with a small half inch head, and a little bit of lacing down the glass.

Smells like roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and some interesting spices/herbs that remind me of menthol or spearmint.

The taste is similar. The barrels provide an interesting dimension to this porter. I'm not getting a whole lot of "barrel character-" meaning oak, vanilla, coconut, etc, but the spirit itself provides an interesting character, slightly fruity, with sort of a menthol of spearmint character that really works with the base porter, which is delicious on its own- lots of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Slightly bitter finish from the roast.

Medium bodied, wish it was a tiny bit thicker. Very drinkable. Creamy smooth mouthfeel.

One of the most unique beers I've ever had, I'll have to keep an eye out for more beers from this brewery.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color porter with a nice thick brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of chocolate malt with light dry roasted malt with some liquor notes. Taste is also a nice mix between some barrel-aged liquor notes with some black chocolate and some dry roasted malt notes. The barrel-aging is well balanced and cut some of the rough edges. Body is quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable beer and really enjoyed the spirit notes that came through this one.

500ml bottle. Batch 602. Served in an oversized snifter.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with 1 finger of a dark tan head that settles to a thin coating and collar. Decent retention. Body is opaque.

Smell: Roasted malt, dark chocolate, mild coffee, and some slight hints of mint and licorice.

Taste: Follows the aroma pretty closely. Roasty, with notes of chocolate and coffee. Sweetness at the front of the tongue is balanced with an earthy bitterness in the finish. Some slight mint along with some almost menthol like character in the finish as well, but these are both very mild.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. A sipper, but not super boozy.

Overall: No complaints here. I enjoyed this one. The barrels' contribution to the overall profile is pretty minor, but luckily the base beer itself is pretty solid.

A: Black with a thick dark brown head.

S: Coffee dominates the nose, with some dark chocolate and roasted malt.

T: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and a bit of oak, molasses, liquorish, herbal notes.

M: Full bodied, not extremely smooth. Feels like a big porter.

O: I'm not 100% sure what the Akevitt (grappa-like liqueur?) barrel did for it, but it's delicious. HaandBryggeriet rarely disappoints.

A: 500ml Bottle. Pours a deep brown/black color with a small head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, spice and a bit earthy.

T: Taste is a blend of roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruits, some spice and bit of wood from the barrel aging. Has a subtle bitterness and the finish is quite dry.

F: The body is quite full with a rich velvety texture. The 10% ABV very well hidden. The flavor becomes more robust as it warms.

O: Very good beer for the style, great way to end the day.

Appearance: Pours an almost black but not translucent dark brown with a half inch head that slow dissipates to a nice thin creamy brown mocha.

Smell: Barrels, coffee, spices, a little bit of alcohol on the nose. There is some dark chocolate and some wood also.

Taste: It comes out with the dark chocolate with a little sweetness from likely the barrels. I am getting the coffee as well at the end but not like you would expect. leaves the mouth slightly dry but finishes smooth. Lets see how it warms up. I might be getting some hops in there that is what might be leaving my tongue slightly dry. Now there is some vanilla coming out. After further google investigation, the Aquavit Barrels were used to age a liquor that was fermented with spices and herbs. They said Dill and also Caraway seeds, and now it does have some slight dill character.

Mouthfeel: Medium to thick body with nice carbonation on the tongue.

Overall: This is a very interesting beer with very slight nuances that set it aside from other BA porters. The Aquavit Barrels have added that slight twist and make it perfect style for Norway and there drinking culture. Thanks Norway for my first Euro BA beer. Yummy.

Bottle to tulip, served cool. Dated Sep 2009, drunk Dec 2012.

A - 3.75 - Opaque black, fizzy tan head that dissipates in seconds. It keeps popping in little tiny bubbles at the surface. You can feel it on the tip of your nose as you sniff closely. Some enduring head would be nice. The guy before me got good retention somehow.

S - 4.25 - I don't know what I'm smelling here. It's almost like a musty leather booth in somebody's basement with a hint of malt... but not in a bad way. A little coffee. A hint of something borderline sweet or syrupy, almost like a barely sweetened chocolate syrup if that were possible. Later something vaguely fruity, but sort of that fruity smell that booze can have. Later a little sherry. The smell grew on me throughout the glass. Interesting.

T - 4.25 - I don't know what aquavit tastes like so I can't really identify those components from amongst the rest, but certainly there is a mature taste. Wood, leather, a little coffee, and a mild level of barely sweetened chocolate. I'm left with a dry woody dusty aftertaste with that chocolate mild bitterness. I'm not getting the same alcohol heat others have mentioned, but then mine is 3 years old. Although I am feeling pretty good and warm after my pint. Interesting.

M - 4.0 - Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation sting, though of a tiny variety.

O - 4.0 - Well what an interesting beer. These are the kind of random buys I like, the kind that turn out to be interesting in a way you haven't experienced before. It always pays to buy at least one random beer per trip that you've never heard of, and increasingly for me it keeps paying off to buy Norwegian. Overall this is a very well balanced and well crafted beer that kind of keeps you guessing as to what you're tasting, but that process is enjoyable. It's not too sweet and the mature notes please the discerning palate. Somebody upstream commented that this was definitely a porter and not a stout but, traditional arguments about the difference between the two styles aside, I say this could pass for anybody else's stout.

Inky black colour with a creamy, tan head. Great head retention. Quite pretty.

Chocolatey with a distinct coffee note. Quite a bit of fusel alcohol. A little earthy. Interesting.

Alcoholic, sweet and fruity. There is a ton of malt here with the lightly spicy, alcohol note of the akevitt. Nice chocolate note. Definitely a porter rather than stout. I like the esters too. A complex and tasty beer as long as you can get past the alcohol.

Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Good.

A wonderful beer from a great brewery. I had this the first time at Josie Bones in Melbourne and it was great. Having it again is a treat and now I see why. Phenominal chocolate malt, great fruit and complex alcohol. Very good.

Pours a dark, dark brown with 1 finger of brown head that sticks around for a long time.

Lots of chocolate on the aroma with a little bit of roasted malts, molasses and a definite herbal aquavit background

Very well balanced on the palate, the barrel treatment is present but doesn't beat you over the head.

The mouthfeel was smooth with a good level of carbonation on the high side for a barrel aged porter but it works in this beer.

Overall I get the aquavit the most in the aftertaste. It is an interesting beer, worth checking out if you like gin.

S: Roasty wood, very herbal, bready chocolate.

L: Dark black, tan creamy head with ok retention and solid lacing.

T: Very bold maltiness with a prominent roast element. Big chocolate bread notes. Low bitterness with very subtle spices. Some mint as well. Quite sweet throughout, finishing quite sweet with some mint chocolate.

M: Medium full body, medium low carbonation, a little slick on the palate.

Pretty solid, aquavit comes through more in the nose that taste, quite sweet.

Well, after a relative period of liver-rest after the Great Taste, I'm ready to go again. I remember a few sips of this beer being hell in a bottle, so I was eager to try it again. 16.9 ounce bottle, tipped while my lovely wife is off at a seance.

Cap doesn't even whisper as it parts with the glass; the beer is dark, quiet, handsome. Now I've never had akevitt, but based on the smell, I'd try it: hard-bitten hot alcohol, castle-siege-charred casks, mocha. That's what I'm talkin' about.

Haand Barrel Aged Porter singes & burns on the way down. This is hotter than any 10% beer has a right to be. There's a grain menthol heat in the forefront, like swigging cold water right after a mouthful of Tic-Tacs. Malts play monkey in the middle, & roll over; a bit weak. There's stale coffee towards the end that puts a damper on my drinking pleasure. Bits of chocolate, odd graininess. The burnt cask takes hold in the aftertaste & throttle the life out of everything else; aggressive to the point of ash. Bit flat & lifeless. Wishing I'd split this little bottle with my wife, might be tough to power through all of this chaos.

Mixed feelings about this one. The barrel lets too much of a weak base beer play peek-a-boo; I'd have rather it drowned completely. Pretty good beer in a crowded field of better players.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 3 fingers of mocha colored head.Nice lacing & better head retention

S: Roasty malt, caramel & hazel nut & mocha, some dark cherry & figs

T: Roasty grain, cocoa, mocha & a bit of charred grain. Dryness comes through as this warms, along some peppery spice/hops, plus coffee & charred grain. Finishes dry, slightly twangy, with some mocha & charred grain, some woody dryness & a bit of warming booze

MF: Medium bodied, creamy, somewhat warming

A very nice barrel aged porter that is bit different, helping it to stand out a bit. This is still in great shape with 2 years of age on it. One of the better Shelton Bro Imports I've had

A: Straight black body with a thick chocolate head.

S: Smells of roast, mild coffee and chocolate, grain, and a hint of dry wood.

T: Woody roast and coffee, dark grain, a bit of chocolaty sweetness. The barrel lends some dry fruity liquor notes closer to the barrel-aged character from fortified wine rather than whiskey.

M: Viscous and creamy.

O: Not bad. The barrel character is interesting, almost port-like, but not as sweet. I think it dries the beer out a bit too much though.

Batch 288, bottled 7/23/10

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color capped by an inch of mocha foam that leaves a few strands behind

Smell: Chocolate mocha, with black licorice and vague herbal elements (more dill than caraway)

Taste: Chocolate, up front, with a developing mocha and licorice character that builds in the middle; interesting herbal flavors greet the swallow, with dill being most prominent; the dill continues into the finish, though the sweeter elements remain quite pronounced

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: Aquavit is distilled with spices, principally caraway or dill; if I wasn't looking for either of these elements, I probably wouldn't have picked it up, but the dill can definitely be found; overall, the brew is a somewhat sweet porter with an herbal twist

Sure looks like an Imperial Stout/Porter. Shiny dark brown, lots of clumpy lace.

Aroma is real nice. I have NO idea what Aquavit smells like, but I think there is some of that in the aroma. The slightest menthol note.

Good. A touch of menthol and a touch of black licorice. There is a depth to the flavor, but I am not sure I could have called it barrel aged since I am not familiar with the notes of the spirit. Some dark chocolate with some sweetness.

Velvety and medium in body. Not quite as bold as some Imperial Stouts/Porters.. Still not sure it should be listed as an American Porter. But whatever.

Decent little beer. Won’t go out of my way to grab it again. But I sure won’t be dumping any down the drain.

A - Just a sliver of red around the edges with a quickly falling creamy,

tight brown head

S - Sweet malts, fruit, vanilla, hint of prune, cocoa and alcohol

T - Very complex sweet fruit and malts up front, followed by prune, yeast,

vanilla and coffee

M - Only let down... very thin with only a hint of tingle on the tongue

O - I could drink this all night

Bottle from a bottle shop in Melbourne recommended and demanded that we visit by Volcanicbeat. He insisted we try this beer and I was quite excited to do so based on the hype. Needless to say it was worth it. From notes.

A - Poured black with good carbonation. One finger of brown head. Spotty lace and a film of retention.

S - Sweet spirit aromas, vanilla, oak, aftershave? Something really inviting and nice. Sweet. Just really great smelling.

T - Chocolate, sweetness. Light spirit note, wood, vanilla. Really, really tasty.

M - Mild carbonation, medium to full body and a sweet finish.

O/D - I wrote 'Christ that's good!' So smooth and flavourful. A fantastic beer with lot's of great spirit flavour that has clearly worked with with the base Porter. Lovely.

From a 500 ml brown bottle, batch #356. The bottle tries to foam over upon uncapping, and a tall tight spongy mocha head fills most of the glass at first. When the head eventually recedes and the glass can be topped up the body reveals itself as an intense opaque pitch black with a thick cap remaining.

Aroma reveals treacle, licorice, alcohol warmth, earthy wood, dried figs and black currants.

Molasses sweetness up front in the flavour, figs and dates, some boozy warmth, oaky wood, with rum and raisins on the finish. Also picking up notes of cafe au lait and light milky chocolate.

Full-bodied mouthfeel, full creamy smooth texture, moderate texture. A great porter that all strikes me also greater than the sum of its parts, all of which are rather formidable to start with. Rather amazing in fact, this is certainly one of the best porters I've had in quite some time, and shall be stocking up on more.

Bottle, Batch 356. Served in Bruery tulip glass

A: brownish black with a very thin beige head around the rim.
S: nose starts off with bitter coffee, followed by some black licorice and a faint burnt char smell. As I continue to smell, an alcohol, almost vodka-like smell pops up along with some dark chocolate. More complex than I expected, very pleasant.

T: Interesting, hard to define when it first hits the tongue, almost a mild coffee flavor that turns into very sweet and sugary at mid point, followed by a slight alcohol burn down the throat at the end. It's good, not great, can't make my mind up on this one.

M: a little dry and thin, again not bad but not great.

O: Been wanting to try more Haand beers lately and this one is not a disappointment. Won't really seek out again, but the Acquavit adds a fun twist to the beer.

Batch 288, bottled 7/23/10 so coming up on 2 years old. 9.6% ABV on this batch.

A: A basically pitch-black oily pour with one of the darkest brown heads I've ever seen. Roughly the color of chocolate. Head is huge and very dense to boot. Retention is wonderful, barely fades at all. This would be a 5 but there is just a bit of spotty lacing, not as good as I expected. Alas.

S: A pleasant smell but hard to describe. There is the obvious roasted malt with a touch of chocolate, but there is some sort of spicy aroma to it. I'm assuming that's from the Akevitt barrel but I have never had or smelled this liquor before so I can't say for sure. Smells almost a little like rye with a little bit of molasses in there.

T: Loaded with roasted malt, heavy coffee and just a hint of chocolate. Touch of smoke. Some spiciness to it that's still hard to put my finger on, again almost like rye - mainly in the finish. Provides a bit of an odd spice to this porter. Lingering coffee bitterness in the aftertaste.

M: Pretty thick and mouth coating.

O: Very unique barrel aged porter. I thought the odd herbal/spice (of what I presume to be the akevitt) was a bit detracting from the taste, but honestly that doesn't make it bad. Just different. Better once fully warmed.

Develops a huge, dark walnut, rocky head that slowly condenses, leaving big patches of lace over a dark brown, almost black, beer while carbonation clings to the surface of a tulip glass.

Puts off an aroma of deep roasted chocolate malt. There are secondary notes of oak, whisky, and caramelized sugar.

The flavors follow the aroma, although the alcohol is overwhelming the more subtle notes. There is chocolate and coffee to be found with a good bite of bitterness. The finish is subtle and lingering.

This one is sharp with a medium body and prickly carbonation. It is dry and chalky with some astringency.

This is a fine drinking porter that would go well with chili or beef stew.
