Appearance - upon opening the bottle, the tan colored suds started gushing out uncontrollably. This could be a sign of a bad bottle. Eventually, I was able to pour and the murky, rocky road color of the brew is noted.

Smell - Contains coffee, molasses, and toffee candied aromas. Although nice, something about it seems potentially artificial.

Taste - One dimensional coffee flavor with a burnt sugar sweetness. The finish kills it a little, as it's borderline cloying.

Mouthfeel - Thin, a bit watery. I don't say this due to the low ABV - a 6% porter could still have a soft mouth feel that adequately coats the palate.

Overall - Unless what I had was a bad bottle or batch, skip this one. It was hard for me to finish. I had such high hopes for it...

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown with a small tan head that quickly goes to a collar that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is lots of coffee, some roast and lactic chocolate with a little smoke and nuts.

The flavor is sweet nutty chocolate malts and roast coffee with a dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with very low carbonation.

Overall, it's one-dimensional but with great coffee notes. A little pricey at $10 a bottle - there are other more affordable coffee beers that are better.

500ml bottle.

This beer pours a clear, very dark brownish amber hue, with two fingers of foamy, frothy beige head, which leaves a rain forest profile lace around the glass as it slowly seeps away.

It smells of pungent, musty bitter coffee grounds, an oily nuttiness, some mild bittersweet chocolate, and soft herbal, leafy hops. The taste is biscuity, bready malt, more medium cafe-infused chocolate, mild dark juicy fruit, a bit of charred grain, a twinge of lactic sweetness, and soft earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is rather innately reserved, the body a sturdy medium weight, and pretty silky in its overall smoothness. It finishes still on the sweet side, though generally tempered by the continuing espresso bitterness expression, and some beaten down noble hops.

A pretty well-rounded porter, big on the coffee guest star, sure, but the other attributes do not falter - that choco-lacto dryness/sourness is present and certainly accounted for here. A tasty tipple.

Pours a black color with medium bubbled tan head. The head size was decent but had lots of retention and left some lacing on the glass.

The beer has a wonderful aroma of coffee beans, really quite fantastic. Some lactose notes. I don't really pick up much else, no need to.

Nice roasted base, woody, wet bark. The lactose provides some milky sweetness and there is some brown sugar notes as well. The coffee is wonderful in the flavor as well. Really tastes like fresh coffee beans. There is a bit of a barky spice that I pick up. Some tea like flavors in the finish.

The feel is light to moderate with fizzy carbonation. The beer has a building bitterness on the palate and finishes slightly dry.

This is a really good coffee porter. Nice woody and coffee flavors.

500ml. Picked up at Charleston Beer Exchange.
About black, finger of light tan fading down to dark tan head. Retained very well.

Aroma, Plenty of chocolates and toasted malt. Lighter coffee.

Taste, Light roast malt, caramel, milk chocolate pretty prominent with the lactose sugar. Roast and coffee even this out very nicely. Kind of a mocha latte finish.

Medium bodied, carbonation on the higher side the only thing I would change to just a little bit less or to a finer carbonation. Drinks very easily still.
Another good one from HaandBryggeriet.

Pours black with a gigantic head, despite very slow pouring.
Nose shows cocoa, sweet dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Funnily enough the chocolate is a lot stronger than the coffee.
Flavours are much more focussed on the coffee, with overt roasty characters. Underneath is sweet, syrup-like malt and a hint of acidity. I'm not sure if the coffee and sugary sweetness really work together.
Way to much carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of aromatic coffee is quite nice with light dry roasted malt notes. Taste is a good mix between aromatic coffee notes with little astringency and roasted malt with a dry finish. Body is quite full for style with good carbonation. Very tasty coffee porter with very subtle smoky notes that I usually associated with the Haand brewery.

Pours nearly black, but more a super dark brown. Medium brown finger of head adorns and laces well. The aroma was nice, though not super in-your-face. More chocolate than coffee, but there's a good bit of roastiness. The taste gives more a coffee bitterness, roast, milk chocolate and more roasted malts. The feel is good, creamy, fairly full bodied.

Not out of this world, but it's really solid and above the curve as far as coffee beers goes.

Outstanding but with some flaws coming from high carb - most likely factors outside the brewer's control.

A: musty roasted malt with a lot of chocolate malt. Coffee aroma almost matching but a small step behind, comes across as mellow and nutty. It smells more like someone opened a tin of good coffee - as opposed to brewed coffee. Incorporates well into aroma of this beer.

A: Very dark brown almost black. Completely opaque, but ruby red highlights show up at the edges as you struggle to get a light to shine through the beer. Which isn't going to happen. Possible age/ temperature fluctuations or other rough handling caused my bottle to becoming overcarbed. Or it could be the result of coffee aging with the beer, or a slow breakdown of some of the lactose? ... either way I got quite a head stand on my first gentle pour - 25% beer 75% tan foam. Easily remedied, but worth mentioning.

F: Very dry roasty porter w associated choc/ black malts - in awesome harmony, and well attenuated to leave a dry, bittersweet chocolate impression at the back of palate. I don't get much sweetness from the lactose (stated on label as an ingredient). And then there's the coffee - also works in balance with the malt, but it comes across more clearly on the nose. Flavor-wise it's there, but it's somewhat hidden behind the big and similar roast malt character. I wouldn't want more coffee flavor in this beer, it's subtle and very well incorporated.

M: Slight acrid roastiness stings on the finish, I think primarily from the very high carb. I suspect this was once a full, creamy mouthfeel but unfortunately now seems a little harsh/ back of my tongue is burning kind of experience. I wish I could have drunk this closer to whenever they capped this bottle.

O: Coffee is a beautiful thing and hard to get right, particularly packaged in bottles because of the way it changes with the beer over time. In the same mind as Stone's ENJOY BY thing - they should do that w coffee beers as well. This beer was very nice, a fantastic coffee aroma, with a subtle but balanced coffee flavor that seemed to meld very well the robust porter underneath.

Pours out a dark brown to black liquid with 1/2 finger of off-white suds that quickily dissipate.
The brew looks thin somehow.
Aroma is charred malts with a chocolaty coffee. I get some raisin and very little alcohol. There is a sharp smell of bitterness here that might be coffee and alcohol but it's hard to tell.
Taste is malty coffee and alcohol. For a 6.2% beer this seems not quite mature like it needed more time in the vats.
Mouthfeel is very clean and the coffee lingers just a tad before the alcohol takes over and finishes this hot brew out.
Overall this is a good try but for ten bucks I won't be buying this again.

1 pint .9 ounce bottle
Served in a perfect pint glass

A - It is dark brown with ruby highlights. I got a meager mocha head.

S - The aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate are noticeable. It is not an overwhelming smell.

T - The taste is of coffee. There is some sweetness. The aftertaste is somewhat burnt.

M - Medium to full. Low carbonation.

O - It is a decent coffee beer. I don't necessarily like the burnt flavor, but it is not horrible. I have no idea how old the bottle is. It may be old with some off flavor, but the store I purchased it at seems to go through their beers in a timely fashion.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a half finger-high creamy tan head that died down but never completely faded away, leaving a thin layer of bubbles completely coating the surface.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of roasted coffee beans in the nose which become stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of roasted coffee beans but only has a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied, extremely smooth and a bit thin on the palate with a high amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very smooth and easy to drink and would make for an excellent breakfast beer.
