A back street boozer in the city centre the Red Deer is tucked away in a back street off the busy West Street and handy for the Trams which rumble down West St at regular intervals. West St is the nearest stop.

The Red Deer is popular with students, real ale drinkers and locals. Though not an essential visit like the Fat Cat or Kelham Island Tavern the pub is worth popping into. as well as national beers like Black Sheep and Timothy Taylor Landlord there are usually a couple of decent guest beers on.

The interior is open plan, having originally been 3 seperate rooms. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

Apart from those real ale gems, there're still some traditional haunts in Sheffield worth visiting, for both relaxed atmosphere and a decent pint. Red Deer is such a place.

Tucked away in the centre of the West Street campus of the Univ. of Sheffield, this back-street boozer is literally adjacent to the back of the Business School building. A semi-freehouse this is, offering up to ten real ales behind the pumps. On my recent visit there were Tetley's Bitter, Banks' Bitter, Deuchars IPA, Adnams Broadside, GK Abbot Ale, and Timothy Landlord and Brains Dark. Although these are all larger brands compared with microbrewery stuff, they're constantly well-kept and served by the skilful barman with care. The barman seemed to be friendly and enjoyed a chat with all customers, adding to a laid-back atmosphere with soft and relaxing music and old rocks, and a "warming" interior that's not rough or artificially exotic: the walls are painted in German-mustard yellow, the lower part of which is wood-panelled, with modern-art paintings-for-sale scattered randomly. The mezzanine floor at the back is esp. nice, providing a good view over the main bar as well as a quiet corner for a chat.

My recent visit took place on a sunny afternoon, so only some locals occupied the place appreciating their pint of real ales. Without the invasion of students (maybe all of which are attracted by those chain boozers and JDW just around the corner on the West Street), this slightly old-ish pub is well worth a visit if you happen to be in that area.
