A: Dark marzen – ice tea coloring with a slight head and some clingy lace. Light flashes of carbonation with a good coverage on the lace.

S: Sweet ice tea scents, a bit sugary malts and caramel, that was light to medium in strength. You would never know this hides a 10%abv.

T: The flavor was malty with a touch of warming alcohol, but no where near its 10%abv advertised value. Some dried apple peel fruitiness comes on the swallow. The alcohol comes off extremely well hidden, though flavor seems to be as well.

M: Quiet carbonation, some maltiness but never has that residual ,feel. Again your tongue will be deceived that this is a 10%.

O: cleanly brewed as with most their beers, lightly flavored, well balanced with alcohol you will only feel coming not taste.

a: This was a fairly dark brown, a little for a doppelbock perhaps. It was served to me with a short, off-white cap.

s: Roasty aromas of coffee, over done toffee, and a hint of choclate. Beautiful nose on this one. Not over the top, but subdued and enticing.

t: Lightly tart roasty malts with flavors of toffee, coffee, and just a little cocoa. Not a trace of alcohol to be found.

m: Gentle creamy carbonation and medium bodied.

d: One of my two favoites from Union Barrel, along with the Mai Bock. This is the place that first got me to appreciate German beer.

A - Nice deep amber color, with a smallish head.

S - Deep smells, very malty with just a hint of fruitiness and spice.

T - Nice malt backbone, with just a hint of dark fruit and a slight tartness. Alcohol is hidden in this beer and could easily pass for a lower ABV beer.

M - Light mouthfeel. Not too much to talk about here.

D - Nice easy drinking, esp. for a doppelbock. Nice balance and full flavors, without being too over the top.

The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a 1/2" offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is awesome! It has a nice malty scent that boasts of caramel malts and burnt toffee. It's a bit warming; just right. The taste is outstanding. It has an incredibly smooth burnt caramel flavor that goes down easy and warms only slightly. The grain bill is perfect. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is the best beer on the menu. It's well crafted and easily drinkable, even at 9%.

I was able to try Wobblin Bob at Canal Street Pub in Reading, PA on 5/6/2008. They served it to me in a standard Canal Street Pint glass.

This Doppelbock poured an interesting dark crimson/cranberry red color. The head of foam was beige in color and about 1 to 1 1/2 inch in height. This head of foam had nice retention that left behind a small beige film and a few beige spots of lace around the glass.

For me, Doppelbocks usually have a dark roasted malt based aroma to them, but this one was fruit based, sour fruit based. It didn't smell like it had gone bad, it was just sour with sour grapes, sour green apples, and a splash of tart raspeberries at the end. This one was a frist with me in the Doppelbock category.

The taste starts off dry with roasted malts, a hint of caramel, and not sour berries. As the taste goes on, the same flavors remain, but it gets dryer as it goes along. Then after it reaches it high dry point, a hint of floral/herbal hops emerges from the background. The taste contained very little malts and was a bit on the sweet side. Unique taste all the way.

The mouthfeel was on the medium bodied side with a dry roasted malty aftertaste. Just behind the dry roasted malts was just the slightest touch of berries. The berries just wanted to say good bye for the last time. I had no idea that this beer contained a high 9% ABV. I couldn't taste it and I certainly couldn't feel it for that matter.

In the end, it's a berryific Doppelbock! I like berries as much as the next person, but I didn't care for them that much in a Doppelbock. Smelling them is fine, but tasting them in a Doppelbock isn't. If you like berry beers with a hint of roasted malts, then give this one a go!

How krazy iz thiz? My local (Brendee's Cafe W. Lemon & N. Mary Sts. - LNC, PA) has had an account with UBW for a while and for a long time, it was the Kolsch. Imagine my shock and delight when I walked in for Wednesday evening trivia last week and there was a Wobblin' Bob tap handle on the array! For the uninitiated, it consists of a heavy, round, wooden head with a protruding wooden nose ala Pinocchio, mounted on a heavy spring so that he wobbles back and forth when a beer is poured. One server has a huge bruise on her shoulder from Bob banging into her, just below her shoulder blade and another damn near got a hockey player's smile (sans front teeth) from the first time she encountered the wobblin', bobblin' Bob. Ha! I have never seen such a leery staff before.

It arrived with a deep, dark brown head, but with low retention. The nose was very sweet and malty, accompanied by a bit of heat. The color was a deep amber/light brown with good clarity. Mouthfeel was full, chewy, hot, sweet, and with a raisin/prune flavor. The finish was kind of smoky with a hot, dried fruit taste that simply lingered.

OMFG, this is graveyard material! It should be illegal to be this delicious and this deadly! One was plenty, but it was a fantastic ONE.

On tap at UBW on 4/11/08.

A - Nice clear deep ruby body with one-finger creamy white head that receded into a thin film. Sparse amount of carbonation.

S - Lots of caramel malt as well as dark fruit and a bit of alcohol heat. Fruit aroma is reminiscent of plums, raisins and dried apricots.

T - Big caramel maltiness as well as some crusty bread and dried fruit sweetness. Mild earthy bitterness, but not too pronounced.

M - Medium to heavy body with syrupy texture and very soft carbonation. Some mild alcohol heat as well. Very minimal bitterness in the finish.

D - Pretty easy drinker for a dopplebock. Very true to style. Solid offering from UBW.

Appears a semi-transparent, dark copper with a 1 finger, off-white head that fades into a mild collar with scattered spots of lacing left around the glass.
Smell is of cocoa, cloves, rum, caramel, toffee, grain, and vanilla.
Taste is of the same with maple sweetness, & brown sugar standing out with moderate fruitiness.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, sugary sweet with mild citrus hops coming through in the swallow.

A-Deep dark amber brown with a medium light tan head.

S-All malt with a bit of sourness

T-Malty goodness with a pleasant twang in the swallow. A nice bit of alcohol warming comes thru at the end.

M- Rich and chewy with the alcohol finish you expect, nice!

D-A solid effort of an American version of this true German style. Overall a nice beer--for a lager!

Hazy appearance in my glass, but rather light in color for a dopplebock. Color is dark amber with ruby tints. A finger-thick of creamy, eggshell-colored head sits atop, and while dissipating, leaves a nice lacing on the glass.

Lots of caramel on the nose, along with some fruit and honey (cherries maybe). Very malty nose.

Sipping reveals a very malty, caramel flavor with lots of honey coming through on the tip of my tongue. A bit of alcohol hits my tongue right at the end, but rather smooth body.

Dangerous feel. With the lack of alcohol coming through on the sip, it is a dangerous brew! Fairly smooth body with just a bit of carbonation hitting at the initial sipping then smoothing out the nice smooth malty body.

Very drinkable. A bit sweet overall for mass consumption, but I'm gonna give it a shot to finish this growler! ;)
