Poured from the GDBC mini-bomber (1 pt, 6 oz), brewed on Nov. 23, 2009.
Inky on the pour, with one of the darkest heads I've ever seen - it's so brown that it looks a little bit red. A big head too, measuring an inch or more, dying down to leave a drapery of lace around the glass. I love the look of that beer.
Funny thing, but the first thing I smell is big burly hops - if you close your eyes and breathe deep, you'd assume this was a big IPA. Seems odd, but I'm not getting much for malts at all.
Wow - that's unique for an imperial stout - the hops are immediately apparent on the tongue, providing crisp, piney bitterness that is only matched once the malts slowly arrive - and when they do, the combination is huge. Notes of chocolate, coffee, and heavily toasted caramel dominate.
Light carbonation allows the rest of the flavors involved to take the front seat. Like a two-part ticking time-bomb of hops and malts in the mouth.
I really wanted to like this beer, but my mouth is only so big, which makes this beer at times somewhat undrinkable - it's just too much to fully comprehend - maybe I need a bigger mouth.
Being so fresh, it really needs a year or two to age. Or an oak barrel - either would help it to mellow out some, and allow the flavors to meld better than what's respresented here - it's a good thing that's an option. Given that addition, I'd give it a full grade higher.

Aroma: Toasted nuts, roasted coffee and chocolate, with a little sweet liqueur thrown in for good measure
Appearance: Pours like slick black oil with a minimal, decadent, half-inch tan head
Taste: Bitter and slightly salty, with a nice, long, lightly sour aftertaste
Palate: Light bodied with a thin oily texture, flat with an astringent, bitter finish
Overall: A good stout, but perhaps a little too bitter to be named excellent.

Served on tap in a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep-deep brown nearly black color with a one finger head of brown foam. The head holds on strong, slowly fading to leave a fantastic level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is a big, roasty, and sweet with a nice roasted malt smell mixed with plenty of milk chocolate, brown sugar, and some caramel. Along with these aromas comes some smells of coffee, bourbon and an earthy hop giving a heavy and nicely roasty aroma overall.
Taste- A big sweet roasted malt and chocolate flavor greets the tongue. This is accompanied by flavors of vanilla and caramel mixed within. As the taste advances coffee starts working its way in, with it beginning lighter and really gaining strength toward the end of the taste. Along with the coffee comes some boozy flavors with some smoke mixed within, melding very well with an increase in the roasted flavors of the brew. More booziness and sweetness (with hints of vanilla) hits the tongue at the end of the taste and with the now somewhat stronger coffee flavor, the robust roast and the sweeter chocolate flavors of the brew ends up leaving a thick and warming taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is quite thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is slightly on the lower side. Both the thick-creamy body and the low carbonation are fantastic for the big, warming and boozy roasted flavors of the brew, making a great slow sipper.
Overall – A very tasty Russian imperial with a big sweet and boozed roasted flavor.
