Poured from a 12 oz. capped bottle (Bottled On: FEB 15 2012) into a snifter glass.

A strong pour yields a 1 1/2-finger deep mocha-colored head that slowly fades after a few minutes to a thin dusting and thick foam ring. The body is a nearly black dark brown that permits no passage of light. Thick lacing can be seen coating the glass throughout consumption but fails to cling to the glass for long.

Deep, dark, roasty, complex, and welcoming. Aromas of dark coffee, burnt coffee beans, and dark chocolate carry slight notes of alcohol and dark fruits (raisins and black cherries?).

Flavors of milk chocolate and dark chocolate caress the taste buds along with notes of dark fruit and vanilla. Swallowing unleashes flavors of black coffee, burnt coffee beans, and espresso. A bit of bittering hops become noticeable in the finish that combines well with the dark coffee flavors. Dark, bittersweet chocolate persists on the tongue as an aftertaste. A sharp alcohol warmth stings the back of the throat.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation, this beer is as smooth and creamy as melted butter. The thick body coats the mouth well but is kept well in control by the carbonation. It is slightly sticky but in a good way.

Poured from a bottle into a Spiegelau stout glass.

A: Wonderful black with a rich brown-gold head. Nice lacing, very consistent liquid, thick and heavy. Gorgeous, wonderful, dark beer.

S: Thick, heavy massive malt body with huge coffee, chocolate and cinnamon on top.

T: Big roasted malt body, significant hop bite. Crisp coffee-like bitterness rises to the top after swallowing. A nice chocolate flavor on the aftertaste. Lots of deep earthy tones and spices. Very consistent, well bodied beer with a nice variety of flavors, but not complicated. Simple, but very good. Not very sweet.

M: Super smooth, some slight carbonation but a nice silky texture to the beer itself.

O: This is a very good example of an Imperial stout that makes no false claims. It's big, bold and huge on the roasted malt character. There is just enough bitterness and alcohol to clean up the malty body. It has notes of coffee and chocolate and is very well balanced, but lacks significant amounts of specialized textures and flavors that you might find in another imperial stout. It's very good, easy to drink and is consistent with its flavors throughout its temperature range. Solid A.

March 2011 bottle. Opened July 2014.

A - Solid, almost bowling ball black body. Creamy milk chocolate head has great retention and lace.

S - An excellent nose, sweet and chocolately. Malted milk balls, deep milk chocolate, chestnuts, touch of burt coffee.

T - Opens smooth, bold, and round with milk chocolate, dark roast coffee, and thick caramel. The center drops out a little, but features nice roast grain and molasses flavors. Really nice dry roast finish.

M - Smooth with a light, well balanced carbonation. Medium-full body with a great coating on the back end.

O - Really enjoyable, and arguably the best of the entire series.
