tired, so these are more notes to myself than anyone else -

pours well, good thick head, but seems to not retain lacing others are seeing, is a young one from july '12.

solid stout characteristics, with a bit of smoke that i've never tasted before (that voodoo maple bacon atrocity from rogue could learn a thing or two from this, because i find hint of smoke interesting in this brew, whereas the voodoo was just plain awful). a tad bit on the thin side as it warms, but not in a bad way. hides its 9.5 abv rather well.

dies down to not much lacing, a pleasing, semi-sweet licorice/burnt molasses/malty kind of flavor, and as others mention, earthy, but very tasty. i can swirl this around for a while and pick out good complexities. at $8 for a bomber, not an everyday drink, but surely on my list of beers worth coming back to.

nice job, great divide brewing!

p.s, normally wouldn't disparage another beer, but am using rogue as a reference point for myself - note to self, might want to try other brews with subtle smoke characteristics.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottled on Jan 08, 2013.

Appearance: Pours a dark oily black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of deep tan head which slowly recede into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A big dark roasty aroma with lots of chocolate hints. Starts with a big scent of sweet dark roasted malts with good hints of dark toasted bread, dark chocolate, coffee, burnt caramel, toffee, yeast, nuts, and a little smoke. A good amount of burnt molasses sugar and a hint of anise spicing. Subtle undertones of dark fruits including fig, raisin, dark cherry, and plum. Also a pretty lively hop presence with some earthy and grassy hints. Smells very big and rich.

Taste: As big, rich, and complex as it smells. Dark roasted malts with a big taste of chocolate, toasted bread, coffee, burnt caramel, toffee, dough, yeast, nuts, and a touch of smoke. Molasses adds some moderate sweetness. Some anise spice comes through. Notes of subtle dark fruit with some fig, dark cherry, raisin, plum, and dates. A pretty sharp hop presence for a stout with a good bitter bite of earthy hops and grass. Big flavor and nicely balanced. Very good.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, thick, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A really great stout. Very bold with the dark malts and a bigger hop presence than what is typical for a stout. Hops are very big when this is fresh.

2011 vintage:

Looks dangerous... inky black body that provides roughly zero percent visibility. A three finger pillow of medium brown head fills the glass and eventually fades to a half finger cap, leaving loads and loads of dramatic lacing.

Tons of smooth coffee and dark pitted fruits. Fudge and milk chocolate as well, a variety of dessert aromas... incredibly smooth without any real alcohol presence. For such a classic imperial stout, this one really has a unique yet assessable profile.

The bittering hops are a thing of the past at this point - coffee grounds, milk chocolate, smoked malts, a bit of red fruit... it finishes really dry, yet sticky. A bitter coffee flavor grasps the palate right up until the next sip.

What can I say? It's a classic.

Served in a snifter glass from a 22oz bottle

A - Pitch black, three finger fluffy dark brown mocha head. Beautiful looking beer.

S - Roasted Malts, Chocolate. Little alcohol on the nose.

T - Chocolate, Coffee. Nice bitterness not typical of the style. Espresso on the end. Sweet Malty offset by a nice hop punch that I wasn't expecting.

M - Velvety smooth. Nice carbonation. Tiny bubbles dancing on my tongue. Would say full bodied.

O - My first Yeti - I'm impressed. Would love to try some of the barrel aged versions of this. Hoppier than I expected, but I like that.

Glass: Over sized wine glass

Appearance: Motor oil, completely opaque. Has a thick and creamy mocha colored head.

Smell: Vanilla, alcohol, peaty

Taste: Peaty, alcohol, vanilla, toffee, chocolate notes, slight hops flavor. The alcohol kind of overrides the bitterness and as a result it's really easy to miss the hops flavor in this. Very sweet, earthy, and roasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied. Slick texture with a dry finish.
