From a 12oz bottle
Dated August 25, 2011

Pours a pitch black color with a perfect sized light brown head, the head is as dark as some brown ales haha, fades at a slow rate to leave some patchy lacing on the glass.

Smell is primarily roasted malt, hints of bitter cocoa and coffee, touch of burnt malt.

Taste has a strong roasted malt front, coffee lingers in and finishes with a burnt bitterness, decent thickness and approaches chewy, the heat is very evident though and definitely could have used some age, rough around the edges.

Not as refined as Old Rasputin but it also seems a bit larger as well.

Beautiful dark as night color with minimal head but sticky, consistent lacing. Smells of dark chocolate, molasses, wood and booze.

Taste matches the nose, with astringent coffee bitterness most prominent, although it is met head on by sweet malt character. The wood note is of a burnt (charcoal) nature. The alcohol is there, underlining and warming.

A nice offering from GDBC. For my money, Old Rasputin from North Coast still rules.

A: pours black as hell into a DFH signature glass, even held up to the light not even a sparkle of brown or ruby tint. There is a thin skim of dark mahogany bubbles that thins out to a ring around the glass. It leaves no lacing.

S: quite the laundry list here, beautifully complex. Coffee, toffee, caramel, deep wood, figs, dates, plums, some dark berries and a lot of dark chocolate bitterness.

T: manages to match the nose quite well. A huge amount of bitter dark chocolate and small amounts of sweet caramel roll over the tongue first and are chased by a bit of grass and bitter dark fruit. A huge amount coffee and espresso on the back. It does a great job masking the alcohol.

MF: heavy, chewy, just a tad warm, moderate effervescence (for the lack of head), and dry.

O: a great imp stout, so glad I finally got my hands on a bottle of this. Its quite the beer and I won't be passing it up again.

22oz bottle (bottled 2/8/2011) poured into a snifter. Jet black w/ a thick dense mocha head that settles slowly.

Aroma is chocolate, toffee, dark roasted malt, a hint of coffee and a really nice nutty aroma that emerges more as it warms.

Taste follows nose. Rich dark roasted malt, chocolate, toffee, booze, and that rich nuttiness make this a surprisingly complex and downright tasty beer. Finish is hoppy and bitter.

Mouthfeel is smooth, velvety and dry.

Overall this is a really great regular year-round imperial stout, one that I'll start stocking regularly in 12oz bottles.

An old favorite and my first love as pertains to imperial stouts. I got a chance to try this on draft at Great Divide's tap room a few months back. This time it's a 12oz bottle into a goblet. I think I messed up the pour because I got almost no head, but I know it gives a brown creme color and is quit sizable usually. The actual beer is as black as Himmler's Heart.

This beer smells like vanilla and chocolate mostly. When you take a drink, it tastes similar but there is a massive hop bite. There is a really dry taste that I can't place there too. Reminds me of the woods, or a lumber yard...in a good way, of course. Nice and smooth. It's sweeter than I remember it being, but not overly so. I wish I had the willpower to age one of these babies and see what happens.

Great Divide makes some damn fine beers in my opinion, this one being up there as one of their best.
