Bottled on Feb 6, 2012

Only the head keeps this from being a 5. It pours like old used motor oil. It's thick, black and looks chewy. The head forms slowly. It's very dark brown. As soon as it hits a finger thick, it just disappears. There is sparse lacing, but it's really an attractive beer for a few seconds.

Licorice or anise, alcohol, possibly figs, and roasted grains. It's simple and sweet. As it warms, bittersweet chocolate scents emerge.

Huge hit of roasted malty stuff up front. As it works its way back, slight toffee flavors develop before alcohol and hops end the treat. For what it is, I'm not sure you improve the flavor.

For such a big drink, it's extremely smooth. It's creamy and goes down a bit too easy given its high ABV and 75 IBUs. It's equal parts sweet and bitter, and enough bite from the alcohol to let you know it means business. Full bodied.

This is really a solid beer, borderline perfect. There's nothing wrong with it and improvements are nothing more than nit picking. It's a great dessert beer or a night cap. Hell, it's good whenever you have it.
