Poured into a Great Divide cervoise glass.

Look: The body is deep copper with murky clarity. The vanilla colored head is thick and foamy and leaves a soapy film of bubbles after receding. Nice foamy lacing initially, but it eventually fades.

Aroma: One of the best smelling beers I have ever put my nose to. Spicy rye and clean cedar boards blend with a nice mellow sweet caramel note. They could almost make a cologne out of this, and I'd buy it -- and wear it.

Taste: More of that sweet caramel comes out up front, which is delightful. The rye follows the sweetness and gives a nice balance in it's dryness and spicy woodiness. The finish has some heat in it, where the 8.3% ABV comes out.

Mouthfeel: A little thick, a little creamy. This is a sipper.

Overall: I have been blown away by the last two Great Divide beers I've tried, including this. Really impressed with the aromatics and mellow taste. There's enough of a malt bill to not get kicked in the teeth, I love that.

22oz bottle at fridge temp served in a tulip. Bottled on June 19, 2014.

Pours a pretty, clear ruby amber with a nice light tan head, strong retention, and a fair amount of carbonation. Smell is lovely, rich, rye, malty-sweet, slight spicy hoppy characteristic.

Taste is rye, bitter, sweet, very pleasing. Slight roasty/toastiness. Hops have a pretty piney tilt to them.

Mouthfeel is rich but dry. Overall, nice beer. I like it.

This brew pours a solid opaque copper color with minimal head and lacing.

The smell is a mix of hops, it is hard to discern what is in there, it smells like mostly grapefruit and orange, but the rye definitely dominates. This being a Rye Beer that is good.

The taste is dominated by the rye and citrus hops. However the hops seem to run together and the subtle characteristics are lost in the confusion. The rye is dominant however the peppery spice on the back end that I am used to tasting with rye beers is not present. There is a thick caramel backbone and some hop oil remains on the tongue after swallowing.

Overall this is not as good as some of the other rye beers I have tried although I have to admit I am not a huge fan of the style. If you want to try an exemplary rye beer try "Ruthless Rye" by Sierra Nevada.

It's been a good while since I have had a Great Divide offering.Pours into a becker a hazed deep amber /burnt orange with a thinner but well sustained head. This is what a rye IPA/DIPA should smell like, sharp rye and a big shot of resinous and citric hops, really inviting, not to mention nutty malts. The flavors back off just a bit from the aromas, nutty malts with spicy rye over top,the hops don't hit home as much. It's oh so close to being awesome for me,yes there is a growing grapefruit-like hoppiness as I drink more but it doesn't really hit home.Such a teasing beer for me.

Fruity, Sweet, Pine, Rye

Partly cloudy copper with a thick beige head. Soft rye, bread, spice and pine in the nose. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Hits the palate sweet, fruity and juicy with a soft citric bitterness along with notes of apple, sticky pine, resin, spice, orange, biscuity malts and fresh grain. Quite dry at the end with spicy rye and a doughy linger. It's a bit gritty, but the showdown between the hops and rye grows on you with each sip, and it's deceivingly drinkable at 8.3 percent. A must try for Rye IPA fans.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #102 (July 2015).

I drank this bottle at 6 months old. This was a gusher with about half the bottle oozing out.
L: Hazy amber, 3” cream colored foam cap. S: Spicy malt, citrus.
T: Starts with spicy malt, rye, and big citrusy hop flavors.
F: when it settled down the body was full, a little slickness from the rye and a hint of oiliness with a light astringency on the finish.
O: Despite the infection this was a flavorful DIPA.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger off white head with decent retention. Lots of lacing.

Smell: An earthy, spicy, and juicy hop forward aroma with hints of rye spice, grass, and pine. Upfront earthy, floral, and herbal hops with dank hints of pine resin and grass. Citrus hints of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, tangerine, and melon. Big scent of rye spicing. Pale malt with hints of caramel, grains, biscuit, and yeast. A really solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy, earthy, and pretty spicy hop driven taste with good notes of rye, grass, and pine. Upfront presence of juicy and oily hops with earthy and herbal notes of damp grass and pine resin. Also some citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, melon, and tangerine. Good taste of the rye spicing along with sweet malt notes of caramel, grains, biscuit, and yeast. A really nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and very drying. Some alcohol heat is felt but things aren’t overly hot.

Overall: A pretty good spicy take on an Imperial IPA. The rye mixes well with the spicy and juicy hops.

Why do I always get burnt by Great Divide IPAs other than the Fresh Hop Pale ale I really don’t think I’ve ever cared for their IPAs other than Titan fresh. The rye in this beer is stealing the show at first smell, but on a bright note it has a great burgundy shade of caramel ruby with a light shade of khaki head forming thick. Bottled on June 19th, 2014, so freshness shouldn’t be an issue here, label jumped out at me with the two bucks engaging and about to lock antlers.

Aroma, juicy malts, big spicy rye, herbaceous hops coming through with perceived sweetness in loads and loads of caramelized malt sugars with lingering spicy rye and muted hops.

Flavor this reminds me of some Bath and Body Works gift I received in my teens from one of my great aunts it was musky and piney, meant to use in the shower but at the time I didn’t think I wanted to smell like the outdoors and a big dose of lumberjack so I ditched it for some Davidoff Cool Water the quintessential late 90s fragrance to get some tail with. However, these big pine notes and musky rye additions bring me back to Bath and Body Works circa 1997! The muddled malts, rye spice, dirty water, and a blend of earthy/herbal/pine accented hops leave me wanting something else hoppy.

Mouthfeel is complex with big malts, more bitter earthy/pine lingering, and the alcohol becomes quite unpleasant as the beer begins to warm…hop burps are burning my nares with fusel alcohols and crushed pine needles. Full bodied DIPA only listed as a RYE IPA but at 8.3% I’m calling it a double.

Overall harsh and beaten up the palate is drained from attempting to drink this big bottle solo, I should take a nap now!

On tap in Atlanta. - 8.3% ABV

Bold and spicy flavor with a surprisingly mild aroma featuring hops with a hint of caramel.

Medium body lacks clarity but has an excellent bone colored head.

O: A robust and strong IPA with partially hidden alcohol.

Bomber served cold into a pint glass.

Showdown is a clear amber red color with thick white head. It settles quickly but leaves some nice lacing.

Aroma is more malty than hoppy.

Flavor is balanced with a good caramel sweetness up front followed by great hop flavor and bitterness. The rye provides some subtle spice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with good balance and carbonation.

Overall a solid rye IPA but a bit over priced in bomber form.
