Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled on date is 9/14/11.
A - This guys pours a translucent mahogany with a light tan head, which dissipates slowly, leaving some patcy foam on the surface of the beer. Can't really judge the carbonation by looking at it.
S - Big, bold malt aromas dominate the nose. There are some smoky notes mixed in with the caramel sweetness. Somehow out of that I'm getting some chocolate undertones as well. Not getting much in the way of hops. A hint of dark fruit. Surprisingly, I can't pick up much alcohol. Given the relatively high ABV, I thought I would get some alcohol on the nose, but it seem to be well disguised. This beer smells great.
T - Big bready caramel and toasted malt flavors. A bit of smokiness as well. There are some dark fruit and chocolate undertones as well. Again, no agressive hops to speak of. Finishes with a bit of an alcohol burn, but it's not unpleasant. As a matter of fact, given that it's a winter seasonal, it's quite nice.
M - Medium to heavy body. Almost chewy. Not much carbonation.
O - Overall, this was a very enjoyable beer. One of my favorites from this year's round of seasonals. I just wish it was actually snowing when I was drinking it.
