2008 and fresh 2011 side-by-side, both poured into brandy snifters. The '08 is 8.1%, the '11 is 8.7%.
Appearances are very similar. Ruby red highlights on a dark cherry brown beer. Antique yellow head. Good lacing.
'11: Smells of burnt caramel, alcohol, spicy hop, vanilla extract. Slight astringent quality. Nice hop twang marries with a big malt breadiness. Not many residual sugars. A bit hot, chewy feeling. A little prickly on the tongue. Fuller-bodied. Interesting cinnamon on the finish, especially as it warms up. Great brew.
'08: Slight oxidation blows milky caramel into full-bloom. Not so much the burnt sugar quality. Remarkably sweeter. Loads of dried fig, paper, maple. The hops have been quited and the malt is big. The breads are a little darker and more toasted. The caramel is there with a bourbon characteristic to the vanilla. Woodsy and earthy. Very milky on the palate. Wonderful vintage beer.
Overall, gotta give it to the '08 for shining through. Fun mini-vertical.
