22 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a pretty, clear, deep, dark, amber/mahogany color with a quarter of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered that top of the beer.

Aroma: Pretty strong aromas of bready, toasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked sourdough bread or pretzels, followed by some brown sugar and caramel, a touch of black pepper and coriander, and a touch of floral, piney hops.

Taste: Nice beer! Very tasty! Lots of bready, toasted malt up front, followed by lots of caramel and brown sugar-like sweetness, some black pepper and floral/grassy flavors of clover and honeysuckle, finished with a touch of piney, slightly bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and pretty effervescent as there is a good amount of carbonation. With an ABV of 5.4%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: Good beer and tasty. Definitely worthy of the medals it has won at both the World Beer Cup (Gold in 2000) and the Great American Beer Festival (Gold in 1999 and Bronze in 2006). I’ll certainly get it again!

I know it's described as "English-style" on the label, but it's still surprisingly malt forward for a pale ale. Not as balanced (or to my taste) as more hop-forward pale ales.
