Notes/Commercial Description:
HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

A- Hercules Double IPA pours a beautifully deep orange/amber color with some interesting sediment floating around in there. The head is a slight off white that billows at first our and is slowly receding.

S- Oddly, I get sweet apples in the beginning, something I'm not used to nor expecting for the style. This is giving way to some rich malts with, again surprisingly enough, not a whole lot of hop aroma or citrus notes.

T- Wow, this is different. Very interesting. It's all malt in the beginning. It's sweet- almost fatty in a way with a good amount of caramel flavor. As i sip some more the citrus begins to come through, mainly with oranges. Finally, there is a good twinge of hop bitterness on the back end.

M- Quite smooth here. Very drinkable given the style. It is every bit as full bodied as you'd expect but still very smooth....which could get dangerous given it is 10.0%.

O- A great brew from a great brewery. I think I would have liked a bit more hop bitterness but I always appreciate a good malt backbone, so I can;t really complain. This is delicious and I would absolutely drink it again.

Serving Type- 12oz bottle poured into an IPA glass. Thanks for reading.

Pours an overcast orange with a meaty head that dwindles to an off-white swirl of melted ice milk. The glass is held together by pretty white lace that clings in all the right places.

Aroma is dirty C-hops rich with malt. You've definitely got your grapefruit citrus in the house, but the piney hops are more cone than needles.

Lots of slick acidic Lupulin. More malt presence than most American DIPAs.

Mouthfeel is cream-filled. Full and feathery soft fades to a slow acidic Humulene chemical burn.

This brew takes an interesting approach to the DIPA style shooting for a very active nutty maltiness in the forefront to bring equilibrium to the loaded hops. The result however I think emphasizes the somewhat unpleasant oil-like burn brought by DIPA level hop rate. By choosing to not showcase the hop aroma and flavor as prominently as others this beer has taken away from itself an important component that makes heavy-hitting IPAs so enjoyable.

Generally I'm a huge fan of their big brews but this was just an average Double IPA, not my favorite.

A - amber, frothy one finger head. Spotty lace and film after a while.

S - apricots, biscuity malts, slight floral hops.

T - cross between IPA and barley wine. Massive malt backbone and apricot and mango notes. Hint of pine. No real bittering hop bite to note.

M - smooth, creamy, light carbonation. Alcohol warmth is noticeable.

O - good IIPA, tho not stellar example. Maybe freshness is an issue.

This was a balanced beer, but not my favorite. However, it is very easily obtained. The only downfall is it is not cheap, a four pack will run you around $16.

Appearance: Really nicely colored beer. Bronze with some head that falls to a very small lacing pattern.

Smell: More sweet malts, not as much hoppy floral aromas as a West Coast style. Not as much in the bouquet as I would prefer.

Taste: More flavor than you would detect from the aroma. Caramel malts present, but some hop bitterness, not as much citrus fruit flavors as I would prefer. I am really developing a palate for those type of IPAs.

Overall: A good beer but I probably wouldn't go with this one again, just due to the price and the fact that there are others that I like more out there for less money. But, I am not disappointed I had a chance to try it, it might have been THE beer. Variety is a good thing.
