Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

22oz bottle poured into a shaped pint glass.

Hercules Double IPA pours the stunning deep color of a copper kettle with a billowy tan head that leaves thick sticky layers of lace. Sediment floats lazily in the copper body. This beer is drop-dead gorgeous.

The smell is subtle earthy, dominated by pine and grass. The flavor exceeds the promise of this beer's stunning good looks. It packs the perfect combination of bitter earthy hops, up-front, followed by a caramel-like finish that is simply delicious. It is impossible to drink this as slowly as the alcohol content dictates.

I have had great earthy DIPAs and great sweet DIPAs, but Hercules Double IPA is the first I've had that is great in both respects. This is what "happy" feels like.

100th review, so I thought id treat myself to a pricey, highly regarded IIPA.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter at around 45°F

Appearance: Amber color with some floaties. One finger frothy egg shell colored head

Smell: Sweet malts (caramel, toffee), maybe some dark fruit, very little citrus

Taste: Even bigger on the malt; Huge toffee, caramel notes upfront, pine in the middle, with a citrus aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Thick, resinous body; Smooth with moderate bitterness

Overall: The dates were scratched off on the bottles, so maybe my four pack was old. Forget a malt backbone, this was almost all malts except for the aftertaste. I think Great Divide meant to put barleywine on the label instead. As highly rated as this is and at $15.99 a four pack, this is one of the most overrated beers I've had in any given style. Sure, it's a great barleywine, but as a IIPA, it's baffling. I'll rate this somewhere in the middle. I don't even see this meeting its reputation fresh. I should've grabbed Founders Double Trouble afterall. That may just be my 101st review.
