A: Poured a translucent deep caramel with some auburn notes into my Victory tulip. Fairly effervescent with a thick light caramel head that dissipates quickly (less than a minute) and leaves lacing about half as high as the head was.
S: Sweet and hoppy with some orange-y notes. Alcohol comes in at the end, but only faintly.
T: Quite hoppy, but not in an overpowering way. The citrus in the smell didn't really come through in the taste as much as I was expecting. There's a smokey note in here as well, but it took me a few sips to pick up on it. Maybe I've trained my taste buds to ignore booze, but I barely tasted any alcohol here; it only registers in finish, and certainly not in the way most 10%-ers do. The sweetness hits you a second or two after you finish your sip and stays with you for a while.
M: Oh, man is this stuff smooth. Wow. Goes down easier than about any beer I've ever tried--certainly easier than anything of similar gravity and style. The brew coats your tongue and lingers in the same way as scotch or bourbon.
O: Awesome stuff. So, so, so smooth. I can't stress that aspect enough. But for the buzz I had after one glass, I'd have had no idea I was drinking a 10%-er. I could session this, no joke. I'll be recommending this one to friends who want to try a "bigger" beer but aren't ready for some of the more overtly alcoholic offerings out there. That's not AT ALL to say that this is a "rookie" beer, though. It's quite complex and includes a lot of flavor notes that I can't properly articulate. Excellent stuff.

100th review, so I thought id treat myself to a pricey, highly regarded IIPA.
Poured from a bottle into a snifter at around 45°F
Appearance: Amber color with some floaties. One finger frothy egg shell colored head
Smell: Sweet malts (caramel, toffee), maybe some dark fruit, very little citrus
Taste: Even bigger on the malt; Huge toffee, caramel notes upfront, pine in the middle, with a citrus aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Thick, resinous body; Smooth with moderate bitterness
Overall: The dates were scratched off on the bottles, so maybe my four pack was old. Forget a malt backbone, this was almost all malts except for the aftertaste. I think Great Divide meant to put barleywine on the label instead. As highly rated as this is and at $15.99 a four pack, this is one of the most overrated beers I've had in any given style. Sure, it's a great barleywine, but as a IIPA, it's baffling. I'll rate this somewhere in the middle. I don't even see this meeting its reputation fresh. I should've grabbed Founders Double Trouble afterall. That may just be my 101st review.
