Poured from a bottle dated 2/7/12, admittedly a tad older than ideal.
A: Quite a bit of yeast floating around the bottom of the bottle - pour this one very softly. Pours a beautiful hazy orange-copper. Unfortunately, no head or lacing whatsoever, and yes, my glass was clean.
S: A well balanced citrus/grapefruit with a caramel/biscuit malt profile. Well balanced. Some yeast throughout. Wish this had more of a head so I could describe it more accurately.
T: Yummy. Starts with gobs of citrus, clear grapefruit and lemon zest. Not a heck of a lot else going on here. A nice round malt finish, but very weak and hardly noticeable. Yeasty, non-bitter finish. Citrus lingers.
M: Crisp, albeit a tad watery. Resinous. I don't say this much, but this could use a tad more carbonation.
O: This is disappointing - I'm a huge fan of GD and was really looking forward to trying their DIPA. I'll have to try a fresh batch to see if it lives up to the hype.

hercules is an american institution, a flagship big ipa thats been on the scene awhile. i can believe its taken me this long to write one up. on tap at the brewery, no better place to have it. clean copper color to this, and just a short white head. a more hefty grain bill is evident from the get go, but the nose reveals a dense woody hop profile, there has to be some columbus hops in this, or something else equally woody. the flavor has some coppery grain balance on the front end, no sweetness at all, and plenty of bite to it as the hops kick in. there is some pine, but i get that fresh milled wood profile first. its quite sturdy and intense on the hop front, powerful bitterness, and filling with all the grain weight as well. i like how big it is, how timeless this is, how often imitated. its a beer i can really only have one of, because its less carbonated like an english ipa, and is so strong that i get both full and drunk with small doses. love this beer though, famous for a reason.

Very memorable DIPA, pours a caramel amber thick, with light lacing and microbubbles. The smell of citrus, with earthy hops, and fresh malty hint, very organic in is olfactory sensation. The taste has a sweetness and depth to it with heavy hops and only a slighly odd after taste. Thick viscosity which love in a DIPA and even balanced carbonation. Upper echelon DIPA.
