Bottle poured into a tulip glass
Bottle date Aug 8th about 2 1/2 months old - freshest I have seen in Illinois
Pours a mostly clear copper color with a decent off white head that lingers.
Smell is full of pine with malty sweetness and some citrus coming through.
Taste is piney and oily with a sweet maltyness to the finish. Hops oil bite lingers.
First time I have seen this one "new" enough to want to try. A more than solid "piney" DIPA but I think I prefer the more citrus forward ones.

A-Pours a nice copper. Nice colored DIPA with a frothy finger of head that. Nice lacing after the fact.
S-Huge hop profile, with a good deal of pine and very small bits of citrus.
M-Crisp and pretty much ideal for a beer of such huge flavor.
T-Huge huge huge DIPA. The hops are fantastic and remarkably complex. The balance is beautiful on the palate as well, but it finishes very very clean which makes the entire bomber very drinkable.

Appearance: Clear copper/amber with burnished copper leanings. Head is off-white, chunky, massive, and sticky as can be. Big clumps of chunky lacing stick to the glass. Deeper reds than expected, looks more in line with an imperial amber.
Smell: Huge biscuity sweet malts. Caramel malts. Caramel sweetness. Almost raw sugar sweetness before it warms. Big chewy malts push something close to molasses at times. Pine needles, grapefruit flesh, even some earthy/herbal leafy hop notes. Sweetness drops as the beer warms. Big malts and big hops in some weird overbalance.
Taste: Pithy, oily hops. Grapefruit rind and pine needles. Biscuity malty sweetness. Some nice caramel malts in the back. Mild nutty with a damp, herbal earthiness from the hops. Lots of big flavors. Lingering pithy bitterness. Leafy and vaguely grassy at times. Malts push ahead of the hops as the beer warms, keeping it sweet and oily in the long run.
Mouthfeel: Body is medium, but slick and smooth. Some lingering dryness. Lightly moderate carbonation.
Overall: Finishing more than a bottle of this was one of the 12 labors.
I like Great Divide on the whole. This ultimately loses out with it's weird attempt at balance. The malts just don't mesh with the huge hop presence and it drinks like 2 beers at the same time. A bit more depth and nuance, with a cleaner hop profile, would bump this in to I want to drink it again territory.

12oz bottle poured into a NB globe. Bottled on July 10, 2012.
A: One-finger off white head sits on a thick looking hazy gold body. Lacing and alcohol legs are prominent.
S: Peppery grapefruit and some pine. Not a ton of malt aroma but there’s a light whiff of caramel. Smells like it will be spicy, dry and biting. We’ll see.
T: Interesting combination of hops. Unique and very aggressive flavor. Not a lot of info about what hops are used on Great Divide’s site, but it’s delicious. Surprised to find that I was accurate to say that it was spicy, dry and biting. There is plenty of malt to back it up too.
M: It’s not a beer to rush through. So much intense flavor, it’s best to chill with this a bit. Finish is drying and alcoholic. Pretty well carbed, body is medium-full, and texture is somewhere between oily and syrupy.
O: Hercules doesn’t mess around. It’s a big 10% beer with an aggressive stance. I think it works pretty well as long as you are fully prepared to assault the inside of your mouth with flavor.

P: A speckled amber copper colored body with a dollop of khaki head that recedes to a swirling vortex.
S: Toasted caramel malt base with loads of juicy tropical fruit. Pineapple, mango, melon, grapefruit, orange oil, alcohol soaked plums, sweet rotted wood, hints of pepper and cloves.
T/M: Sweet toasted toffee and caramel accompanied by the juicy tropical fruit in the nose. The malt is rather thick and the fruitiness comes out more as balancing bitterness than sweet. Grapefruit is the big player followed closely by pineapple and melon. Mouthfeel is sticky and bold with prickly carbonation. Finishes dry with pine oil sneaking in at the end leaving a dry yet resiny feel. Alcohol is apparent once warned and presents itself as grapefruit soaked in spiced rum.
O: One of my favorite DIPA's. Tropical fruits, juicy and sticky toasted malt. A great balance if flavors. I did a three way blind tasting of this with two other fantastic DIPA's. It wasn't the winner but it definitely held its own.
