Wow! This is the one! Wow, what an India Pale Ale. If you desire that taste as I do, then this may well become your favorite beer. As many of us know this type of beer was shipped to British forces in the 1700's all the way to India. It had to survive so it was loaded with hops to make the trip. That "hoppy" taste became a favorite, what we now know as IPA. And Hercules has taken it to the extreme.

Presentation: Pours with a deep copper color. You know you are in for something special if you like IPA's. It pours with a good foam, but settles quickly.

Smell: Mmmm. The real aroma of an real IPA. Wow! This has possibilities. The burnt hops. The bite. It's all there. This is a serious beer. Surely you can't overlook this beer. It demands your attention.

Taste: It's the strong IPA taste we all search for. As an IPA lover I long for that bitter/flavor combination. It has resiney hops. Piney, yet citric and very clean. And strong. This is one IPA that will lay you on the floor, with that big punch you want and sip for, and more and more.

Mouthfeel: Smooth to the tongue, but full of body. But all the bite is there. It's a great American IPA. And Mama, it will bite!

Drinkability: Only one of these. Two and truly this is one beer that will kick your A$$ ! But.. you will feel satisfied. Be glad.
More review added on- three years later
Its been three years since my initial review, and I must say this single beer is my one champion. Exhibiting all the things I love. Holy Sh$t I love it.

It has all the hops I love. It has just enough malt in there. And it is perfect to both exhibit to friends as "my fav beer", and yet to finish my day out, just fine.

This is the one.

22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a lovely deep tangerine color with a huge frothy off white head that leaves very nice lacing.

Smells amazing! Fantastic sweet piney hops galore! Very inticing.

Taste is just as good! Starts out with an intense hop bitterness, closely followed by lovely creamy piney hops that linger in the back of the mouth.

Very full and creamy, but not at all syrupy.

Highly drinkable at 9%. One of the best DIPA's I've had. Maybe one of the best beers I've had period!

Chill hazed copper with a veritable army of yeasty floaters, and a frothy white head that laces the glass beautifully. The monstrous aroma is of citric floral hops contributing to the grapefruit character that I so love, and a subtle malty undertone. The first taste is the expected initial citric hop blast. Moving forward I notice some sweet caramel malts underneath the bitter rush, some yeasty nuttiness, and a barely perceived alcohol kick. There is a great coating, lingering resinous aftertaste. Full bodied and very smooth, this magnificent brew is like a Siren softly singing my name, seductive and dangerous. 'Ware the ABV.

Pours a cloudy burnt orange color. Thick bubbly head with good retention, thin lacing around glass. Smell is definitely hops, very floral yet not too overpowering, very pleasing on the nose. Taste comes through with big hops at first, of course, but finishes with sweetened malt. A delicate balance that IMO is as close to perfect as one can imagine. 9.1% ABV, but there is too much flavor here to notice any trace of alcohol content. Very smooth, crisp finish, subtle aftertaste that diminishes rather quickly. Wonderful beer.

Had this on tap at the Map Room in Chicago. Obviously they pour into the proper glassware. Served in a flute, the appearance was a orange-ish gold. A good head of foam about a half-inch. Pretty well carbonated.
The smell, was a good sign of things to come. A blast of hoppy flavor through the nostrils gave a hint a number of spices.
The taste, a very hoppy bitter kick. Very potent. Works every part of the tongue. The aftertaste was a kick.
Very smooth in the mouth. Drinkability was really impressive. This is a must try for the hop lover. I would definitely have this again.

Peach color, super sticky lacing, a few islands of head retain throughout.

Huge fresh hop aroma, apricot, citrus and a touch of floral. Truly a spectacle to take in. Huge in every aspect and what I would expect in a Double.

Fresh slick hops are dominant. This is a friggin hop McBomb. Bitter as hell, grapefruity citrus at points, just a touch of sweet fruits and malt but it is a hunt to find it. This is one of those beers where its taken almost to extreme but it doesn't cross the line into annoying. This is a damn fine brew.

Notes: Bought this in denver and somehow had the willpower to not drink it till I got home for a monday night football game. Now that I know its awesome I wish I would have brought back more. Oh well, Keep your eye's open for this gem.

I love this beer! It pours a hazy amber with a significant creamy head that leaves lots of lacing on the glass. The smell is to die for. Great wiffs of citrus and piney hops. Can't decide whether I like smelling or tasting this beer better. The hops knock you over the head but in such a good way. It has a smooth, medium bodied mouthfeel. I find this an extremely drinkable beer for such a hop monster with high alcohol.

I tried this on a recommendation from a local retailer. It is quite good, but it is also quite expensive. Also, the ABV is too high for it to be a decent session beer. The alcohol does not over power the taste, but it makes me too loopy after just a few.

Nevertheless, this is a great choice if there's only time for one bottle/glass.

Drank a 22 oz bomber of this, almost all by myself.

A: Pours a slightly hazy honey color with a tall, rocky head. Fantastic retention - couple fingers of thick, creamy head.

S: Smells begins with sweet caramel like a Scotch Ale, then turns to piny, citrus hops. Light malty balance in the finish.

T: Great balance of flavors - one of the most balanced IPAs (and a Double, at that!) I've ever had. Very bready taste at first, some yeast. Piny hops. Little bite of alcohol. Hop flavors linger nicely.

M: Very creamy, offsets the bitterness of the hops very well.

D: Excellent! Great Divide is becoming one of my favorite breweries. The Hercules sports balanced flavors that are bold but not overpowering. I would definitely, definitely reach for another one of these.

Thanks for sharing Gabe!

Hercules presents itself a deep, dirty blonde color with a dense head of wheat colored foam. Retention is excellent for a beer of this strength and lacing is nothing short of spectacular. When all is said and done, an iceberg of thick foam is still swimming in my goblet.

Massive hop aromas rise from my chalice to greet my senses. Grapefruit slices and tangerine peel with gobs of sticky pine notes and oily hop resin. It possesses an underlying caramel malt sweetness that provides excellent balance on the nose.

The flavor explodes with honey-dipped grapefruit peel and sweet citrus hop oils, sprucey pine, toffee and luscious caramel malts. It's insanely hoppy, but has a decadent amount of malt to carry it through to a long grapefruit and chewy honey caramel soaked finish. As it warms, each sips gets better, mmm, mmm, mmm.

The body on this one is huge with a lushly dense and exquisite creamy mouthfeel. Hands down, one of the best double IPA's, ever. This is another superbly crafted ale from a brewery that is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Appearance: From 12 oz bottle, dark hazy orangem minimum head that dissipates quickly, slight lacing.
Smell: Very citrusy aroma.
Taste: Malt forward, hoppy finish. The taste left on the palate is pine. Some alcohol burn, in a good way. Thi sbeer is very hoopy but the malt presence balances the hops for a very positive overall taste experience. The malts keep this from being a puckerfest but it does not overpower the hoppines. Excellent balance. Long hop finish.
Feel: Decent mouth coating, it does not leave the mouth dry. Refreshing.

when I first saw this in the store I snickered at the name and label, but so glad I tried it. Excellent offering from Great Divide. This is a very balanced beer, a little something for everyone!

This is my favorite DIPA, that I can purchase here in Georgia. The head is big, rocky, and never fully diminishes. Lacing is really good. The obvious citrus/grapefruit aroma is very evident and the hoppy/resin taste matches the aroma perfectly. Drinkability would've been a 5.0, except that the alcohol can really sneak up on you. It's hard to tell from the tast/mouthfeel that this is 9.1%
Updated - 4/23/06 - Had this on tap last night. This is even a better beer on tap. The aroma and taste were better. My wife even noticed it. This has come as close as possible to matching the Pelican India Pale Ale, which is our absolute favorite.

Holy volcano of head shooting out of the bottle! I thought I was being careful, and this one has been sitting in my fridge for a bit, so it was not warm... Poured out to a beautiful apricot-amber color with a bubble bath of thick orangey head that sat nice and creamily on top. Smells sooo good. Major pine coming from my glass. Fresh juniper berries, walnuts, white grapefruit...
Wow this is good stuff! Creamy, almost thickish mouthfeel, but not heavy feeling, just a bit chewy. A decent amount of carbination, but it flows so well around your mouth that you don't notice it. It feels soooo smooth and lovely. Such good happy freakin hoppiness going on here! Burnt toast, grapefruit rind, peppery, bit of caramel sweetness. Leaves a ton of flavor in your mouth after each sip. Very drinkable for the hop heads, I'm lovin' this one!

By far one of the best looking double IPA's I've laid my eyes on! Absolutely gorgeous glowing cloud of orange, deeper in color towards the top then at the bottom where it keeps some golden highlights. Massively stacked inch high head of dusty yellowed whipped froth that becomes crusty and lumpy as it muddles down to a thick haze remaining present. Lace in thick globby ink blot sheeting and strings.

Aroma is redolent with highly sweet citrus and soft dry pine, a bit juicy and oily thick with some resinous qualities, but set back some and moderately present on the nose. Lots of alcoholic vapors seep through like volcanic gases about to rupture the top of a fault-lined island of hops.

Taste is wowfully juicy with citrus flavors, fresh, clean, with a good load of skins and pulp of every kind play softly in the front but gain a huge acidic return at the finish. Nice bitterness of orange and grapefruit acids and hop oils coat the end for a good long while along with a finespun slow drying pulpy action. Slight sticky toffee-like malts way in the back. Floating pineyness vapors and alcoholic esters pass into the finish as well. Uff-da - yum! There's no doubt that this has a Herculian amount of hops. Quite complex and full of citrusy things including the flowers and blossoms too. Akin to Dreadnaught in its hop profile. A yummy puree of hops are to be enjoyed and awed upon while trekking up this mountain.

Feel is quite smooth for the seemingly end of hoppy citrus thats been given. Big full body with fluffy edges. Thick, fat, juicy, super fine citrusy bitterness. Oily but dry finish thats incredible to undertake. Yum!

The name "Hercules" fits this well. It grew on me, sip after sip, I kept entering that dreary bewildering state of hoppy glee and nirvana that hopheads search for. Much like the myth of Hercules itself, the myth of a hoppy dreamscape can be accomplished with the right amount of imagination and desire to make it come true. Thanks Great Divide, you've opened my eyes anew.

From memory:

a) Deep red colour, slightly hazy. Two fingers of head which left good lacing.

s) Very strong smell of resiny hops. Slight caramel sweetness in the smell too.

t) Hugely powerful palate. Heaps of fruity, resiny, citrussy hops balanced out by a big old caramel malt kick. I love this in double ipas, it puts the bitterness in to a nice context against the sweet malts.

m) So smooth. Thick enough to be unctuous in the mouth but just carbonated enough to stop it from being cloying or syrupy.

d) for a beer of this strength, the drinkability is dangerously high.

This one seems to be a regular at my local growler filling station.
Pours very clear copper with a nice, full frothy head - lacing lasts throughout.
Smell is great combo of a typical floral IPA with hints of malt and pine.
Taste is superior for a 2IPA. Hop bite is up front - the malt aroma explains itself here also - probably the maltiest(?) 2IPA I've experienced to date. Additional flavors that come to mind are pepper and another spice that I cannot name.
Mouthfeel is smooth as silk.
Overall a superior and very drinkable 2IPA. Alcohol presence is much less than others I've tasted. American IPAs are my first choice and I tend to stay away from 2IPAs due to the alcohol content and taste. This one totally breaks the mold for 2IPAs in my book.

Awesome beer! Tastes like a bourbon barrel aged beer. I love double IPA's and this one is excellent. I've been drinking a lot of Cigar City Jai Alai IPA recently, which is an excellent beer, but Hercules blows it away. Good balance of bitterness and some malt.

A: Brilliant amber under a 2” sudsy white foam collar that provides sheets of lace.
S: Citrus, malt, caramel.
T: Big bitter grapefruit flavors start and end the drink with rich malt flavors in the middle.
F: Medium body and above average but very creamy carbonation. Smooth.
O: A very drinkable and well balanced DIPA.

Poured from the tap at the Biergarten in Charleston, SC into a pint glass.
Aroma- A big hop and citrus aroma, very nice
Appearance- A mildly murky copper colored beer with a thick small white head
Taste- A nice malt and hop mix that hides the high ABV well.
Palate- A medium to heavy bodied beer with moderate carbonation.
Overall- A great DIPA, highly recommended.

I have to say this is the new #1 on my list. Pours out with a heavy appearance, a strawberry red/honey gold color with a creamy tan head that lingers...and lingers...and lingers...and lingers. The aroma is citrus, roasted malts, piney hops, and some light spice. The taste is phenomenal, sweet malts up front, tart citrus with some more sweet dark fruit undertones in the middle, malt and a lot of nice dry bitter hops in the finish...perfectly balanced and a kick that begs you to come back again. The moutfeel is the best I have had...the measuring stick for all beers in this category. Creamy....ultra creamy, smooth with a bit of oily hop that actually ads a bit of character, and a perfect amount of carbonation...any less and it would be a bit flat...any more and it might overpower the delightful creaminess. Nice and drrinkable a joy...go get this one.

Thanks bditty187, for the bottle.

Left very nice lacing on my glass. Head was thick and frothy. Taste was very crisp, slightly sweet and citrusy, exceptionally smooth, not too heavy. It was not as carbonated a I expected but it was balanced very well to give a nice mouthfeel. Hoppy taste lingers on the tongue for a satisfying aftertaste. Overall my favorite DIPA to date, I'd put it over six point resin (mainly due to the drinkability of Hercules)

Pour - Great thick body. Solid layer of foam at top.
Color - Darker than usual Amber.
Smell - Very strong hops, blended with a fruity aroma.
Mouth - Good thick maltiness - coats mouth well.
Taste - This is what you'd expect a very high-gravity double IPA (10% alcohol per the bottle) - extremely sharp hoppy bite, blended well with the fruit finish, but the bite really sticks out.
Overall - This is not a beer for a "casual, light IPA drinker" - this is for the IPA drinker that LOVES the hoppy, bitter bite of a double IPA. If Great Divide Brewing sought to make the hoppiest Double on the Market, then in this beer drinkers opinion - they very much have. Overall - 96.
