HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Out of the bottle comes an orangey copper pour. Not so much cloudy, but enough color that it's primarily opaque. The head is a slight off white color, though not as thick as I expected. It's lacks the meringue like peaks of other IPAs, as well as the retention. Still, the beer itself is a bit darker than others.

Not sure of the hop variety, but it's faint on citrus. Sure, it's there, but it's laid back. Pine is as well. The scents are nice, but you have to really get your nose in the snifter to get at them. For a DIPA, you get plenty of malt notes.

The ingredients are more aggressive on the taste buds than the olfactories. Very biscuity taste before the hops drop their pine notes. The bottles says it's got a peanuty taste, and it does as you approach the finish. Citric notes are there, but it's mostly the rind instead of the juice. A slightly different taste than other DIPAs.

Again, the feel is a bit different. It's got a savory buttery feel. Kind of oily from the hops, the buttery feel goes hand in hand with it. Unlike a PA or IPA which can scrape your palate clean, this kind of smothers it and doesn't let go. Full bodied. Very clean bitter finish. The strong alcohol finally makes a move in the swallow for lingering heat.

Pretty good double overall. I wish the nose was a bit stronger, but it made up for it with the taste. The alcohol is present, but never obliterates your palate or throat.
