Notes/Commercial Description:
HERCULES DOUBLE IPA is not for the faint of heart. It is, however, fit for the gods. HERCULES delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish. Its hefty backbone of nutty, malty sweetness balances its aggressive hop profile. 85 IBUs.

12oz bottle poured into a NB globe. Bottled on July 10, 2012.

A: One-finger off white head sits on a thick looking hazy gold body. Lacing and alcohol legs are prominent.

S: Peppery grapefruit and some pine. Not a ton of malt aroma but there’s a light whiff of caramel. Smells like it will be spicy, dry and biting. We’ll see.

T: Interesting combination of hops. Unique and very aggressive flavor. Not a lot of info about what hops are used on Great Divide’s site, but it’s delicious. Surprised to find that I was accurate to say that it was spicy, dry and biting. There is plenty of malt to back it up too.

M: It’s not a beer to rush through. So much intense flavor, it’s best to chill with this a bit. Finish is drying and alcoholic. Pretty well carbed, body is medium-full, and texture is somewhere between oily and syrupy.

O: Hercules doesn’t mess around. It’s a big 10% beer with an aggressive stance. I think it works pretty well as long as you are fully prepared to assault the inside of your mouth with flavor.

P:  A speckled amber copper colored body with a dollop of khaki head that recedes to a swirling vortex.

S:  Toasted caramel malt base with loads of juicy tropical fruit. Pineapple, mango, melon, grapefruit, orange oil, alcohol soaked plums, sweet rotted wood, hints of pepper and cloves.

T/M:  Sweet toasted toffee and caramel accompanied by the juicy tropical fruit in the nose. The malt is rather thick and the fruitiness comes out more as balancing bitterness than sweet. Grapefruit is the big player followed closely by pineapple and melon.  Mouthfeel is sticky and bold with prickly carbonation. Finishes dry with pine oil sneaking in at the end leaving a dry yet resiny feel.  Alcohol is apparent once warned and presents itself as grapefruit soaked in spiced rum.

O:  One of my favorite DIPA's. Tropical fruits, juicy and sticky toasted malt. A great balance if flavors. I did a three way blind tasting of this with two other fantastic DIPA's.  It wasn't the winner but it definitely held its own.

I can see why many like this beer--it's very flavorful and it wakes up your mouth, which seems to be a strength of Great Divide brews in general. But it is way too sweet for an IPA--or dipa in this case. It's like a saccharine, syrupy European fall-winter beer, with a touch of a hop bite. Bottle copy says Hercules "is not for the faint of heart...delivers a huge amount of hops from start to finish." Um, no. It's sweet as candy and the supposed 85 IBUs are totally masked. Appearance also not good in my six-month-old bottle--many floaties.

12oz poured into a goblet.

A deep bronze color with a small white head that dissipates quickly. Nice lacing. Crystal clear

S biscuits, light molasses, light hops

T I taste fresh baked biscuits, butter, molasses, in the beginning and middle which leads into a big hoppy ending with lots of sweet floral notes. The aftertaste is light with nice bitter pleasant endin.

M a little thick, slightly prickly, good crispness.

O a great beer. Would buy and drink it often. A great big beer.

A - Amber with a two finger off-white head. Head is very fluffy with big bubbles that recedes quickly leaving nice lacing around the glass. Lots of sediment floating around in the glass.

S - Orange and lemon peel. Slight hoppy aroma and pine needles.

T - Pretty impressed that I can't taste the booze in this big beer. Nice blend between bitter hops and sweet citrus fruits. Very well balanced and smooth.

M - Light and smooth. Very little carbonation and no alcohol burn. Pretty impressive for %10.

O - Very drinkable DIPA. Would be a great beer to break someone into the category. I prefer my doubles to have a little more bite, but overall this is a pretty amazing beer.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours out a typical slightly hazed orange-amber color with two fingers of soft fluffy off-white head that lasts for about three minutes, leaving medium amounts of lacing behind on the glass. Medium body and carbonation levels.

Smells and tastes of caramel, toffee, pine resin, grapefruit, orange peel, lemon peel, light amounts of herbal tea, and a touch of earthy dryness in the finish. Honestly, I was somewhat pumped up by the hype around this one before trying it, and I feel somewhat disappointed as a result. I still fail to see what all the fuss is about. It's just yet another typical well-made IPA in a market already over-saturated with the style with nothing in particular that makes it stand out above the rest.
