Appearance- Poured into a snifter, jet black, no light enters, just a black hole. The darkest head I have seen on a beer. Great retention and tons of sticky lace, I have never seen a stout of this stature lace this much. Perfect 5 appearance.
Smell- Bitter coffee and pine sided hops. Some dark chocolate, slight oak, vanilla, and molasses.
Taste- Dark chocolate, dry cocoa and bitter coffee beans up front. Turns to some piney hops, and some subtle dark fruit; raison and a hint of plum. Then the charred oak pops up on the finish (though not smoky), fairly woody with subtle vanilla, caramel, molasses. Lingering coffee/chocolate and slightly charred wood on the finish.
Mouthfeel- Full body with perfect carbonation, very creamy. After 9 months the alcohol presence is nil.
Overall- The espresso oak aged is better, has even more oak and coffee (obviously), but this is still mighty tasty, better than 95% of the imperial stouts out there. It just has some stiff completion amongst its own brand. None the less, still a no doubt, solid “A” beer. This Yeti series is epic. I would do terrible disgusting things for a Barrel Aged version of this!
