Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice glass. Bottled on October 16, 2013.

Appearance: Pours an oily pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About two fingers of deep tan head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing on the glass.

Smell: A deep, roasty, and fairly sweet dark aroma with big hints of chocolate malt, coffee, and oak. Dark roasted barley malts with big hints of bitter dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, burnt caramel, toffee, cream, nuts, and yeast. Barrel presence with hints of oak chips, sweet vanilla, and wood. Sweet hints of burnt molasses. Solid hop backing with earthy hints of grass. Smells sweet but nicely balanced. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a very roasty and nicely sweet and bitter dark malt driven taste with some notes of oak aging. Dark roasted barley malts with a big taste of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, cocoa, toasted bread, biscuit, cream, nuts, burnt caramel, toffee, and yeast. Good barrel presence with notes of oak, sweet vanilla, and wood. Sweet notes of molasses. Slight taste of anise. Backing notes of earthy hops adding some nice balancing bitterness. A very good big stout taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is pretty tame.

Overall: A great twist on an already great Imperial Stout. Big and bold with the dark malt and the hops bring some nice drying balance. The oak presence is very solid.

Bottled 9/11/2012, poured into a teku

A- Pours deep, dark and black with a one-finger creamy dark tan head that retains decently, leaving some nice lace behind

S- big quaff of chocolate milk and dark chocolate bar up front, aromas of malted milk balls and slightly smoky malt, dark fruit and licorice, a hint of hop bitterness and chili heat, oak and more chocolate on the finish, impressive!

T- smoky chocolate malt mixes with some dark fruit notes, cherry juice, peppery chili, and coffee. More chocolate with oak and a hint of vanilla on the finish, with a coffee linger

M- medium viscous body with low carbonation produces a mouthfeel that is pure silk, leading to a velvety finish with a slight hint of alcohol warmth on the linger

O- the year and a half of cellaring has worked wonderfully for this one. Everything seems to mesh so well, with the chocolate notes taking center stage. Loved the malted milk ball aroma as well.

BTL date Sept 11, 2012
Rich chocolate torte pour with minimal heading.

Initial nose of malt, black coffee, sweet cream, dark cocoa and hint of clove.

Strong hop presence is dry with smoky oak notes. Sweet cream, vanilla and dark chocolate dominate. Chocolate frosting coming to mind. Coffee ground evident.

Mouthfeel is of dry oak, dark cocoa, and black coffee coating the tongue and lingering. I know I mentioned pleasant earlier but this is very forward and unabated.

Overall a nice stout that you would love for the bittering and drying effects. This is not really for the sweet tooth. Younger bottles tend to be raw and this is one to stow away for awhile. Young version I would give it an overall 3.5. An unrefined brew that can broken but still brash for the liking.
