22-Oz bomber with no bottling date on it.

Pours a jet-black beer with a tall and thick BROWN head that dies down only grudgingly. The doesn't let go easy either it densely sticks to the walls of the glass. A word of warning, the head on this can get out of hand; take it easy or it will overflow the glass.

Smell is strong chocolate aroma that reminds me a lot of Kahlua. Spicy alcohol scent carries more chocolate scents and a good whiff of hops. Additional scents of butter, rum, burnt sugar, and isley scotch with a touch of smoky peat. Earthy scents of wood and sage round out the scent of this most impressive looking stout.

Taste is creamy and chocolately from the start with a bit of black coffee and oak in the first taste. The flavor is a little sweet but not in a bad way and there is a slight acid edge here from the dark malts. There is a strong zip of hops in the flavor that is mostly herbal in flavor and gives this a slight "carrot" after taste once the chocolate and coffee flavors die down.

Mouthfeel is milkshake thick; equal to the best I have ever tasted.

The only possible defect to drinkability is the alcohol content. In all other respects I want unlimited refills of this, but all I have is the one bottle. I do have a second bottle I was saving for a BIF, would be a shame if that got "accidentally" drank and replaced with a Stone RIS!

Pours a thick, oily black with a short cappucino-colored head that seems to have something of a ruby tinge to it. It retains a thin frosting of the head throughout the session.
Aroma is deep and malty, heavy chocolate and prevalent alcohol.
Taste is rich and complex. Lots of dark malt, with some chocolate and a bitter coffee character, as well as a bourbon or whiskey flavor and a touch of vanilla. Some piney, bitter hop balance. I get a subtle hint of the oak character in the aftertaste after the initial maltiness subsides. Alcohol also present in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is pretty thick and somewhat syrupy. Definitely a big brew, drinkability is good, but the intense flavors and alcohol slow it down a bit. A pretty good brew overall.

Jet black. Brown full head.

Beautiful chocolate/coffee/hops in the smell.

Taste is powerful, yet smooth. Lots going on here. Chocolate, esters, coffee, slight vanilla hints. Hops are up front as well. Once it warms up, the oakiness really shows up.

Feels thick. Like dessert. Goes down real easy, but this is for sipping.

Drinkability scores a tad lower for me because this is too rich to drink too much of. Heavy and filling. Worth trying if you are a fan of big heavy stouts. This one delivers.

Darkest, most impenetrable brown possible, yet not quite black, with a faint highlight of garnet around the bottom of the imperial pint glass into which it was poured. Massive velvety frothy light brown head. Super cool webby lacing. Larger bubbles have a noticeably oily sheen. The aroma is deliciously sweet vanilla and chocolate with undertones of roasted coffee. Notes of cherry cordials. Taste is of mellow, bourbon-laced chocolates. Sturdy hop presence through the middle (more so as the beer warms). Velvety chocolate-covered esspresso bean finish. Mouthfeel is slick and oily, but very refined. This is a full-bodied stout that is definitely a sipper. Rock-solid and satisfying, but I couldn't do more than one of these every month or so. Perfect for a snowy evening like tonight, though.

I ain't no hop head, and I ain't no stout whore, but this beer makes me understand where both sides of the so-called "spectrum" are coming from. Let's get the appearence out of the way. It's black, perhaps a glimpse of ruby light at the very bottom, with an excellent portion of brown foamy head, the non shrinking kind. I first smelled this beer and thought, wait, is this the Hercules? It honestly smells very floral and hoppy with a slight alcohol burn. Also, a sarcastic amount of malty character coming through. But, for once, in a stout, and I'll say it again folks, I ain't no hophead, but they're in full effect here. I love malt in an IPA and I love hops in a stout, and that's what holds this beer together. Excellent grassy, fruity notes, an excellent compliment to the hearty, chocolaty roasty malts which are truly the backbone of this beer. Oh man, the fact that this beer is citrusy and chocolaty and burnt and coffee-ish and very hoppy and malty at the same time kind of makes me want to freak out. But I won't. I'd also like to comment on the fact that this beer is barrel aged and adds a lot of nice mellow (I'd like to say mellow once more) alcohol characteristics on top of all the crazy activeness. Definitely one to check out folks, regardless of what style(s) you like, cause this one tries, and succeeds, in covering all the bases.

Appearance - completely dark, one finger of chocolate milk colored head leaves ropes and patches of lace behind.

Aroma - smoky and piny, maybe a hint of chocolate. The piny hop aroma (Amarillo?) starts to dominate as the beer settles, making it my first I.S. with a hop dominated nose. What could it mean???

Taste - slightly sweet malts gets a brief moment of stage time at first. Then intense roastiness and charred grain hit the palate. Grapefruit and pine flood the mouth on the swallow, taking over completely. The finish stays hoppy but allows in a light roasty caramel flavor. Easily the most hop-influenced I.S. I've had, a nice change of pace.

Mouthfeel - thick and chewy, active carbonation, on target.

Drinkability - very tasty but the purist in me would generally seek an I.S. with less IBU's.

This ranks near the top of Impy Stouts I've tried. Coal black with a slow-forming thin mocha head. Dense with a bit of malty sweetness - dark chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Sugar gives way to bitter as the hops move in for the finish with a well-moderated bluntness. Alcohol is noted, but not obtrusive. Surprisingly drinkable for the heft, as neither the sweet, roasted malt or the hops assumes a cumulative role. The epitome of a fireside warmer.

Pours an opaque black with the viscosity of spent motor oil. A light brown colored head that stays intact for quite some time and leaves behind excellent lacing. Aromas of chocolate, alcohol, butter, and oak are detectable for an interesting mix. The taste is rich with cocoa and chocolate upfront with a mildly bitter finish that evolves into a dry, sweet aftertaste. In my opinion, this is a bigger beer than many beers I've tried within a similar style (Russian Imperial Stout). This beer is complex with varying levels of flavor poping up at different times; a truly terrific beer. The high ABV is not easily detected making this a easy to drink beer, but not one I would have more than 2 of in a single sitting because of it's rich texture and bold character.

Pours out standard imperial jet black with a tan head. The head leaves quickly, but that is somewhat expected for a beer of this type. The lacing is extensive though, so the appearance is still quite good. Nose is a roasted malts wallop...alcohol is also present, as well as coffee notes. This is textbook impy, and I can't wait to try out the flavour.

The taste gives a nice back of the tongue bitter to start before delving into the roasted malts in a strong way. A wonderful bitter effect keeps lingering on the back of the tongue as the flavour transitions, giving slight vanilla and oakey aspects. The flavour also maintains a strongly chocolate tinged aspect throughout and finishes with a strong roasted malts shot. I really can't ask for much more from an imperial

The mouth on this is thick, just as I like my stouts. The bitter hits are also there and add to the character. Drinkability is quite solid, as expected.

Overall: this oak aged Yeti is quite exceptional. I love imperials, and I've had a tonne of them, and this is right up there with the best of them. Definitely recommended.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter. 10/19/05

This Beer is by far my favorite double stout out there!!! It pours a used motor oil looking thick black, with a one finger head that dissapates into a ring around the glass and a slight oiling in the middle. Some decent lacing as i enjoyed this brew.

The nose was of vanilla and chocolate roasted malts and a little alcohol. A very plesent experience.

This beer is huge in the flavor department. Starts off with the typical chocolate roasted malts with hints of vanilla just in the middle and a gentle bite from the 75ibu. As this beer warms it really starts to shine. Every sip is so antisipated because of the complexity of flavors swirling around on the tounge. Its like candy to me.

Oak aged yeti is Thick, and very well balanced. Its not "hard" to drink thick but you know its there. Smooth creamy mouthfeel and very easy to drink will get you in trouble with the abv% Agian my favorite double yet !!!!

nice looking bomber with silver foil. Pours a black body, but not like motor oil as some ISs can be. Nice molasses head and good lacing. Very sweet aroma. Not really roasty, slight mocha aroma. Oaked/vanilla scent is present but subdued. Lots more mocha/dark chocolate in the taste than the aroma. Really rich dark chocolate. Vanilla is blended perfectly. In general I like vanilla flavors in beers, but if they're overboard I find them undrinkable. This is a nice blend here. Great beer, a must try if you enjoy imperial stouts.

It pours like crude oil straight from the hull of the Exxon Valdez. Thick, viscous, impenetratable by light. Unlike a goblet full of oil, this beer produces a thick and lasting head the color of espresso crema. Staying power is surprising due to the strength of this beer. Lacing is equally thick and impressive.

Aroma is everything you love about Yeti; dark chocolate, overripe dark fruits, espresso, scorched sugars, and licorice. It's enhanced by sweet vanilla, toasty coconut, and creamy Bourbon notes. Great nose, but it doesn't leap from the goblet the was a Stone RIS does.

Flavor more that makes up for the subtleties of the nose. It emphasises dark semi-sweet chocolate, espresso, burnt brown sugar, raisins, dried cherries, and titamisu. The oak adds a lucious toasty vanilla, coconut, and Bourbon note that is just perfect. The Bourbon is definately there, but not overpowering like a fresh Heresy or Thumbsucker. It melds perfectly with the deep stout flavors. It still has a great, sticky pine sap hop finish. But this is a year old bottle and has rounded out fantastically.

Body is huge, thick, and chewy. Texture is that of liquified silk; creamy, slippery, and smooth as polished glass. Drinkability is great, especially when paired with a slice of Mudslide cheesecake. Oh yeah!

This beer pours a jet black with a very thick dark brown head. The head fades extremly slowly, leaving a massive amount of laces. This beer has a woody aroma. Slightly smokey. It smells strongly malty. I detect a coffee aroma. Behind that, I smell chocolate. I detect a very slight vanilla aroma. Also, I smell licorice. This beer has a very complex and diverse nose. This beer tastes very malty. I can detect a vanilla flavor. Coffee is also present. It has an excelent balance of hops and malts. I detect a slight chocolate flavor. The 9.5% ABV is well hidden in both the aroma and the taste. This beer is full bodied. It goes down surprisingly smooth, leaving a sweet malty aftertaste. This beer is quite thick. It is not too carbonated, which adds to the drink. This beer would probably not make the best session beer due to the alcohol and the slightly aggressive flavor. I think this is a wonderfull beer. I am happy to have had an opportunity to try this beer. Thanks very much mentor for once again, helping me get a winner.

Appearance: Pours a pitch black body with a tan head that quickly dissipates but leaves good lacing

Smell: Piney hop smell with strong bitter roasted notes underneath; coffee, chocolate and a clear hint of alcohol

Taste: Starts out with a strong taste of French Roast coffee with dark fruit and woody tones; the hops kick in mid-palate and continue to build well after the swallow and complement the alcoholic warming; a hint of vanilla in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: An excellent imperial stout with an interesting twist of vanilla

appearance: The pour into the snifter creates a great looking 1" light mahogany head. The beer is almost black in color.

smell: The aroma exhibits a wonderful interplay of roast malt, chocolate, vanilla, woody, and hop aromas. There is a nice level of sweetness here, that especially compliments the chocolate. The smell is extremely smooth, and only a little ethanol is evident.

mouthfeel: Carbonation is only slightly less than medium, and the body somewhere between a heavy medium and heavy.

taste: Mmmm, tasty. Initially sticky sweet...chocolatey with plenty of roasted malt flavor. Then the hops kick in and provide a bitterness to offset that sweetness. Again, very little to no ethanol is noticeable. The finish is of a lingering hop bitterness, and dark roasted flavors that last long after the sip. Very, very smooth. Maybe a tad too much bitterness.

drinkability: Very good and flavorful, a bomber is more than plenty. The sweetness begins to accumulate over the course of the bottle.

I believe that oak aging did the regular Yeti well, smoothing out most all of the flavors. More complex than the regular Yeti.

1-27-07: Cellared for over a year, probably from the same batch as this review. Still produces a nice layer of espresso colored foam, though it soon dies most of the way down. Smooth yet lively carbonation over a full, thick body.

On the nose, we've got oaky ethanol tones carrying loads of roasted malts. Dark cocoa powder...creamy, even a little lactic. The subdued hop aroma is overshadowed by all the roast and chocolate. Ever-so-subtle notes of hardwood smoked meats. Seems like the age beat back the hops a little, letting the oak come through nicely. Very, very near a 4.5.

On the tongue I find an explosion of flavor. Dark roasted and chocolate barleys bring great complexity, well rounded out by a strong oak character. Loads of dark frut sugars. Like sucking on a piece of lightly charred wood brushed with molasses. Aged hop flavor. The roasts and oak last long into the finish with a moderate bitterness. Definately a future candidate for cellaring.

Pours an opaque bitch black with a perfect 1.5" dark khaki head. Huge globs of lace cling to the sides of the glass... absolutely perfect looking beer.

Huge smells of vanilla, chocolate, nuts, and some hops in the back. Wonderful smell... I could inhale this scent all day long, but I am eager to drink it.

Big oaky flavors make themselves apparent. Vanilla is also very evident, along with a toffee flavor.... surprisingly hoppy for an oak aged brew, although I suppose the 75 IBUs should have tipped me off.

Big, thick mouthfeel. Very chewy and subtle on the tongue... exactly how an impy stout should feel.

The only thing that hampers the drinkability is the 9.5% by content, and I suppose its thickness. But as for being able to simply tolerate the taste... I could drink this beauty all night long.

I cannot say enough good things about this brewery... they constantly impress me. Well done.

Appearance: This was poured from a 22 oz bottle into tumbler. Color is mocha-dark with a nice frothy head that reminds me of turbinado-sugar rich latte foam.

Scent: Smell is mild and syrupy, yet it is pleasant and not noxious in the very least.  The second wave follows with a subtly sweet and nutty aroma with hints of caramel candy.

Taste: The first sip brings a very very slight chocolate-cherry sweetmess. There is definitely a nutty aftertaste that kicks in after the sip has finished swirling around the mouth.  A slightly bitter (but pleasant!) tanginess remains after the stout has gone down.  Upon going down, this beer warms the throat nicely.

Mouthfeel: This double has a smooth body which does not allow itself to be overpowered by the the alcohol here. I don't feel it is as heavy as some other double stouts i have had before. It has just enough spice to tingle and supplant the taste, but not enough to make the mouth it burn.

Drinkability: The Yeti is very easy to drink. Each sip is large and fruitful, encouraging one to savor and enjoy. Each sip builds layers onto the taste, building complexity and flavor. This is definitely one of the top double stouts i have had the pleasure of drinking. Even though I tend to shy away from beers that exhibit a lot of hops, I found the hoppiness to help in building character.

Hmm... not sure how I feel about this brew. I tend to go back and forth on oak aged brews- I love them or I hate them. This one I'm oddly in the middle on.

Smelled and tasted very winey, some brandy in there, cherries and/or other dark fruits. I think the oaking was a bit on the overpowering side. The stout flavors are just not coming through like they should.

Mouthfeel was a bit too thick for my liking, and this guy was a bit hard to drink. By no means a bad beer, but it was just a bit... lost, muddled. Bland, even. Too much oak, not enough of other things. I'll let this guy sit for a while and try again- perhaps with the un-oaked version.

A - Poured a beatiful black with a nice tan head.

S - Strong with the oak. Also has strong molasses and some chocolate in there..

T - Mid malt presence and blanced with the hops. Chocolate covered cherreis and kinda sweet.

M - Easy on the pallette.

D - For it's style a litttle bland. But for being a double stout it's right on the money.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a snifter. Pretty damn opaque. Creamy forithy tan head. Smells like dark and red fruits, jammy, like blueberries, etc., with a touch of vanilla and woodiness. The oak-aging is quite apparent in the nose. Alcohol apparent too. Very aggressively hoppy up front, some intense dark chocolate and pluminess, a quite woodsy/vanilla sweetness, and a fairly bitter, drying finish. The mouthfeel is thick, but something about the carbonation is lacking. Not my favorite double stout or oak-aged beer, but not bad.

Oak-aging a big beer is always a compelling tactic.
It worked pretty well here though maybe could have used some more time to mellow out. The oak covers up a lot of the more subtle stout flavor, and meshes a bit strangely with what are otherwise more dominant stout flavors. Reminded me quite a bit of Avery's Samael's oak aged ale in the oakyness but Samael's struck me as being a bit more unique?
I'd try this again if only to taste side by side against the un-oak-aged version.

I first tried this beer at the Festival of Barrel Aged Beer (FoBAB), Chicago Illinois in 2004. I remember it knocking my socks off as it was the most flavorful and aggressive beer that I had tasted to that point. Samples of the beer has shown up here and there since, but the beer still packs a punch. Yesterday, I sat down with a 750 of the regular Yeti, so this review is somewhat in comparison.

The pour turns an insanely viscous, malt pitch black with a brown-ish moussy head that tops the beer like whipped cream. Retention, lacing, and legging are all ideal.

Extreme maltiness carries with it eqully intense espresso, bittersweet cocoa, caramel, toasty-roasty notes that never waiver. Surprisingly, more fruity notes are experienced in this version of Yeti than the original; licorice, grapes, dates, plumbs, cherries, and other fruitcake aromas.

Flavors do mostly the same. Very rich flavorings of the cocoa and coffee dominate with the backup of fruity, boozy boldness. The taste is much more round, complex, and full than the hop-laiden original Yeti. The barrel aging doesn't really give much woodiness or zeal, but it does better emphasize the fruity notes of the beer while taking the rougher edges off of the hops and fusal alcohols.

A bit smoother, rounder, and richer than Yeti the beer takes on a marshmallow-like fullness and savory textures. Much easier to drink.

Served from the bomber into a pub glass.

Appearance: Pours a perfect blackness no hints of opaqueness noted. The head towered briefly then retreated to an ever present carmel mocha film on the beer. A little toffee colored lacing clung onto the glass relentlessly.

Smell: Fantastic loads of vanilla and coconut jump forth combining with the original Yetis herbal chocolate and coffee dunked pine cone. Smells very spicy alot is going on here and it does not clash with the other smells.

Taste: This has loads of woody herbal coffee and chocolate flavors combined with coconut and other fruity goodness. This monster is loaded with hop goodness that prevents excessive sweetness. This beer is pleasingly spicy.

Mouthfeel/ Drinkability: This is a good beer. This beer should be sipped and savored. It has a fairly high alcohol content but is well balanced and very smooth. I think I will have to repeat the regular Yeti soon for a closer comparison.

A-This beer pours an inky black body with a nice size dark brown head with a faint reddish hint. The tiny bubble of carbonation roll up the sides of the glass.

S- As soon as I started pouring I could smell the wonderful dark malts. The slight sweetness of caramel, molasses and dark brown sugar are combined with a slight smoky, oak hint and a faint hop note. It has a soft hint of leather way in the background. As it warms some notes of vanilla and prunes start to show up.

T- The dark malt that is deep roasted and some roasted black grain have very soft flavors to them. It finishes with a nice hop spiciness. There is a nice bitterness to the malt that is mixed in with the hop finish, which gives it more depth.

M- This beer has a medium full mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture. There is no alcohol warmth and no astringency.

D- This a very smooth beer that has good complexity. The smells and flavors are dark but not harsh. It was a bit on the sweet side but had hops to blend with the dark malts.

Another beer I picked up at D’s in Pittsburgh, can’t get it anywhere in around here. From a 22oz bomber, pours a very dark brown (almost black) with a small but tenacious, thick brown, foamy head. Excellent thick rings of lacing. Visually, I think this is about as good as it gets, especially from a bottle. The smell is nice and complex, like the style should be. Chocolate, coffee, nuts, esters, lightly woodsy, vanilla, cherry, and a hint of nutmeg and earth. The taste is strong and chocolaty, with alcohol, light dough, and a slightly medicinal taste. The finish is long, warming and lightly bitter with oak and chocolate refusing to leave. The mouthfeel is marvelous, again especially for a bottle. Full body, silky texture, very low carbonation. Overall, it’s very good but I’ve had better. But the mouthfeel alone makes this beer quite memorable.
